Hate crimes against women in America are often underreported because women are not explicitly listed as a protected class under hate crime laws. However, evidence suggests that some crimes against women are motivated by bias based solely on their gender. Pending legislation would add sex to hate crime categories and require collection of data on gender-motivated crimes. Human trafficking disproportionately impacts women and girls who are targeted for sexual and labor exploitation.
2. ● A gender-based hate crime is a crime that
is committed because of the defendant's
bias or hate towards that specific gender.
What is a gender-based hate crime?
3. ● Hate crimes against women aren’t known in statistics, because they
aren’t identified as a class under the Hate Crime Statistics Act.
● Many say that crimes against women are personal, but there is
evidence that some crimes are biased just because they are women.
● A pending Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act
(LLEHCPA) would add “sex” to the categories of hate crimes, and
would require the FBI to collect statistics on gender-motivated crimes
from police departments across the country.
● The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was enacted to protect
women from hate crimes.
