Editor's Notes

  1. Research Familiarize yourself with the issue/advocacy objective you will be documenting Review existing video and media coverage of your issue/advocacy objective Research and clarify audiences, assessing perspective, level of information and attitude Develop your Video Action Plan and outline Develop a Video Action Plan including a guiding paragraph and outline to be used as a beginning structure for your film and for possible fundraising purposes. Review with allies Think of ideal situations and interviews that will convey your message and put together shot lists to be used as a guide during production. Develop a budget and fundraise Create a budget for your production estimating the costs of travel, food, lodging, equipment, licenses, postproduction facilities, etc. Use this estimate as a goal for fundraising. Develop security and consent protocol Develop your security and consent protocol, and develop relevant project descriptions for different audiences Prepare for the shoot Contact potential interviewees and create a production schedule allowing enough time to get the footage you need. As necessary conduct pre-interviews. Create an equipment checklist and prepare your camera equipment, checking that all equipment is in good working order and all batteries are charged. Scout out the locations you will be filming in to choose a suitable environment to film, keeping in mind both sound and light conditions. As necessary, create a call-sheet for other people involved in the production
  2. Consent Be prepared with consent forms or record on-camera-consent for all interviews. Ensure informed-consent discussion happens before each interview Film Record all the audiovisual elements of your video according to the outline you developed, and adjusting to the situation as you film Shoot actualities: action footage of people and events. Shoot B-roll: establishing or environmental shots and cutaways Shoot interviews: through formal interviews or informal dialogue. Archival footage Obtain relevant archival material such as documents, newspaper articles, artwork, stock footage, photographs, and music. Label and organize your footage Back-up footage to hard drives and store in a secure location. Organize all of your media into folders labeled by date. View, log and transcribe your footage as soon as possible after filming. Identify where, when and by whom the footage was recorded if there are no security concerns.
  3. Prepare for the Edit: Schedule and prepare a postproduction facility and select an editor Script: Working with your logs and transcripts prepare your video’s structure on paper using a script, storyboards and/or a paper edit (see 4.4 ‘Paths to Edit’ session)
  4. Edit: Digitize tapes into your editing program and create an assembly edit. Check your assembly cut against the script, and ask yourself if you have stayed true to the original concepts and audience/advocacy goals Create a first rough cut, by refining the assembly Working from your script, develop a rough cut. Test-screen your rough cut to colleagues and allies for feedback, comments and suggestions (see Reference Sheet 4.5: Analyzing a Rough Cut) Create subsequent rough cuts as necessary Based on feedback, develop a fine cut of your video Test-screen your fine cut to colleagues and allies for feedback, comments and suggestions (see Reference Sheet 4.5: Analyzing a Rough Cut) Create a final cut of your video by working on color correction, sound mixing, music, subtitles and text Do an “online” including adding graphics, doing a final sound mix, and digitizing the film in high resolution License: Secure the rights to all third-party archival material. Output: After locking picture “output” masters onto tape and compress video for relevant digital formats.
  5. Advocacy Distribution Review Video Action Plan distribution and advocacy plans, and update as necessary Prepare DVDs/VCD/tape/online copies of the video Distribute according to Video Action Plan
  6. Selected questions will be answered by trainers during the “Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production Process” Session. Ask participants to write 1 question per note card adding a heading at the top as to which stage of production each question refers to.
