8. INTRODUCTION
Bluetooth Wireless Technology (BWT) was developed in
1994 at Ericsson in Sweden.
It is named for Harald Blaatand.
Bluetooth-Wireless and Automatic technology simplifying
art of communication.
Frequency used is 2.45 GHz, same used in ISM devices
Purpose – Originally it was build to eliminate the need for
cable connections between PDAs and notebook PCs. 8
9. BLUETOOTH SPECIFICATION
Bluetooth-Wireless technology providing link
between mobile and electronic devices.
It operates on 2.45 GHz radio signals using
frequency hopping spread spectrum.
Technology of Bluetooth concentrates on short
range of communication.
9
10. BLUETOOTH SPECIFICATION
•Standard: IEEE 802.15
•ISM Band Frequency: 2.4 GHz
•Range: 10 – 100 meters
•Channel Bandwidth: 1 Mbps
•Maximum Asymmetric Data Transfer Rate: 721 Kbps
10
11. TYPES OF BLUETOOTH WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY
Depending on the power consumption and range of
the device, there are 3 Bluetooth Classes as:
•Class 1: Max Power – 100mW ;
Range – 100 m
•Class 2: Max Power – 2.5mW ;
Range – 10 m
•Class 3: Max Power – 1mW ;
Range – 1 m
11
12. WHY THE NAME BLUETOOTH?
The name was adopted as a tribute to the
tenth-century king Harald Blaatand .
Harald liked to eat blueberries, which gave his
teeth the coloration that lead to the nickname
"Bluetooth.“
12
13. BLUETOOTH BASICS
Bluetooth is low powered and low cost.
All the devices follow a uniform structure
Devices Connect through network called Pico nets.
Strength lies in handling data and video
transmission simultaneously.
13
14. HOW BLUETOOTH WORKS?
They normally operate at 2.45GHZ in license free
globally available ISM radio band.
Advantage-worldwide availability and compatibility.
Disadvantage- devices must share the bandwidth
with other RF emitters including automobile security
systems, noise sources such as Microwaves
Solution- Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum.
14
15.
16. BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE
Bluetooth software can be installed and used on
Bluetooth capable devices.
There exists different software for different devices
like PDA , personal computer.
Enables the device to use technology at its fullest.
Best example is Bluesoleil.
16
17. BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE
Bluesoleil can be installed on
personal computer or on
personal digital assistant also
On a PC, it provides a lot of
Extra wireless features.
It also has a graphical user
interface (GUI).
On a PDA, provides basic
Bluetooth profiles such as
headset and hands free profile
personal networking (PAN)
profile
17
18. FUTURE OF BLUETOOTH
•BROADCAST CHANNELS:Adoption of Bluetooth
into mobile phones and enable advertising models
based on users pulling information from the
information points.
•TOPOLOGY MANAGEMENT:Automatic
configuration of piconet topologies in scatternet
situations.
18
19. MERITS

20
24. WHAT IS ZIGBEE?
ZigBee is a new wireless technology
Technological Standard Created for Control and Sensor
Networks
Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard
Created by the ZigBee Alliance
Philips,Motorola,Intel,HP are all members of the
alliance.
24
25. ZIGBEE
Designed for low power consumption allowing batteries
to essentially last for ever
ZigBee makes possible completely networked homes
where all devices are able to communicate and be
controlled by a single unit
It provides network, security and application support
services operating on the top of IEEE
25
26. ARCHITECTURE
Layered architecture
These layers facilitate the features that make
ZigBee very attractive:
low cost
easy implementation
reliable data transfer
short-range operations
very low power consumption
adequate security features
26
28. ZIGBEE DEVICE TYPES
There are three different ZigBee device types that
operate on the layers in any self-organizing
application network
1. Zigbee Coordinator node
2. Full Function Device (FFD)
3. Reduced Function Device(RFD)
28
29. 1.ZIGBEE COORDINATOR NODE
It is the root of network tree and a bridge to other
network
Able to store information about the network
Only one ZCN for a network
It act as a repository for other security keys
29
30. 2.THE FULL FUNCTION DEVICE
An intermediatory router transmitting data from
other devices
Needs lesser memory than Zigbee coordinator
node
Lesser manufacturing cost
Can operate on all topologies
Also act as a coordinator
30
31. 3.THE REDUCED FUNCTION DEVICE
Device capable of talking in the network
It cannot relay data from other devices
Less memory
Cheaper than FFD
It talks only to the n/w coordinator
31
32.
33. The ZigBee Alliance is an association of
companies working together to enable
reliable, cost-effective, low-power,
wirelessly networked, monitoring and
control products based on an open
global standard.
33
37. ZIGBEE VS BLUETOOTH
Bluetooth targets medium data rate continuous duty
1 Mbps over the air, ~700 kbps best case data transfer
File transfer, streaming telecom audio
Point to multipoint networking
ZigBee targets low data rate, low duty cycle
250 kbps over the air, 60-115 kbps typical data transfer
Long battery life (weeks to months)
More sophisticated networking 37
39. CHARACTERISTICS
Low power consumption with battery life ranging from
months to years
High density of nodes per network
Low cost
Simple implementation
Low data rate
Small packet devices

41. IEEE 802.15.4
Zigbee is set of high level communication protocols based
upon the specification produced by 802.15.4 - standard for
wireless personal area networks (WPANs)
41
42. IEEE 802.15.4 CHARACTERISTICS
Maximum data rates allowed for each of these
frequency bands are fixed as 250 kbps @2.4 GHz, 40
kbps @ 915 MHz, and 20 kbps @868 MHz
Channel access using Carrier Sense Multiple Access
with Collision Avoidance (CSMA - CA)
Addressing space of up to 64 bit IEEE address
devices, 65,535 networks
42
43. APPLICATIONS
The ZigBee Alliance targets applications Across
consumer, commercial, industrial and government
markets worldwide
Home networking
Industrial control and management
43
45. CONCLUSION
In future all devices and their controls will be based
on this standard.
Since Wireless personal Area Networking applies
not only to household devices, but also to
individualized office automation applications,
ZigBee is here to stay. It is more than likely the
basis of future home-networking solutions
