production as a process putting into consideration the history and the reason it was formulated. It

1. Definition
Any activity in a process, which does not add value to the customer, is called 'waste'. Sometimes the
waste is a necessary part of the process and adds value to the company and this cannot be
eliminated, e.g., financial controls.
Lean production is based on the principles and working processes of the Toyota Production System
(TPS), and has been defined as doing more with less. In its simplest terms, lean production can be
described as the elimination of waste. It has been most prominent in discrete, repetitive assembly–
type operations. Liker suggests that the goals of lean production are highest quality, lowest cost, and
shortest lead–time. Lean production can be considered as a philosophy and as a set of tools and
practices for the continuous improvement of operations.

Removing cost and waste may seem like simple things to do but finding the necessary changes and
implementing these changes requires time and effort. A method used to accomplish this goal is lean
manufacturing.
Lean manufacturing is a continuous improvement practice that focuses on waste reduction. Waste in
its simplest form is anything that is excessive and consumes resources. It can also be referred to as
non–value–added activities that do not add value to the end product (Rizzo, 2008, 58). Sustainability
on the other hand recognizes a print company's capability to satisfy the 3 dimensions: people, profit
and environment (Wirtenberg, 2013). These three dimensions are referred to as the triple bottom line

conducting training, initiating pilot projects and implementing changes (Poksinska, 2010). Some of
the benefits of lean implementation includes: improves quality and safety; improves staff moral;
improves throughput; improves delivery and helps in cost reduction (Jones and Mitchel, 2006; NHS

LEAN MANUFACTURING
Origins of Lean Lean originally originated from Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) (McCarthy,
2015) in the early 1900's however it wasn't until the Toyota family introduced the Toyota Production
System (TPS) into their company manufacturing operations that it began to gain recognition. In the
1950's, Toyota first implemented quality measures within the production lines process and hence the
initial stages of continuous improvement. Taiichi Ono, who was the executive vice president,
developed and implemented the renowned Toyota Production System (TPS) after the Second World
War as a means of producing a highly effective and efficient manufacturing line for their products.
Ono took great inspiration from Henry Ford's early lean concepts and applied it to meet the demand
of their own Japanese market. This built the seeds of TPS, which today is better known as lean
manufacturing (Womack&Jones, 1996). Nowadays, Lean is used globally throughout industry in all
different sizes of enterprises that can depend on the successful implementation of Lean. (Herron,
2008). Toyota's success as one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers and leading Lean

Found within the book of Matthew in the New Testament is the parable of the foolish man and the
wise man. The similarities from The Hunger Games are portrayed through the stark contrast of the
Capitol and the districts. In this parable, "the foolish man" is depicted by the dictating Capitol, while
"the wise man" stands for the destitute districts. A strong foundation of solid rock is used for
building "the wise man's" house, which in this example would be the people's lives. Most of the
district members build their lives upon firm ground, meaning high standards, moral character,
humility, hard–work, and justice. They know that what the Capitol is doing is wicked and unjust.
This builds a strong moral character inside them, placing their houses upon rock, so when the rains
come down, and the floods come up, they will be able to stand steadfast amidst the destruction. On
the other hand, the Capitol is symbolized as "the foolish man" because of their unwise decision to
construct their lives upon loose and fluctuating sand. The sand is constituted of traits such as:
shallowness, pride, laziness, selfishness, trivialness and de–sensitivity. Therefore, once the heavy
rains come bearing down, they will simply be washed away. In this quote, the people of the Capitol
are explaining how they felt or what they did when a certain event in the Hunger Games took place,
" 'I was still in bed!' 'I had just had my eyebrows dyed!' 'I swear I nearly fainted!' Everything is
about them, not the dying boys and girls in the arena" (354). The example of selfishness and shallow

The book of Ruth is a book about sacrifice, faith, patience, love, kindness, restoration, and
fruitfulness. The basic literary is narrative and the authorship is believed to be Samuel written
between 1020 – 1000 BC. The main personalities of this book are Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. The
Book of Ruth is about how a man named Elimelech takes his wife Naomi and their two sons Mahlon
and Chilion from living in a town known as "the house of bread" in Bethlehem to the land of Moab
on his own will to escape death. Here the two sons married unequally yoked Moab women by the
names of Orpah and Ruth. All within a decade Naomi loses her husband and two sons to death. One
day Naomi hears that God's favor has returned to Bethlehem and that food is available so Naomi
decides to return. Not too far into the journey back to Bethlehem, accompanied by Orpah and Ruth,
Naomi tells Orpah and Ruth to return to Moab but Ruth decides to continue with Naomi and follow
God. Upon their arrival, the whole town was in a frenzy at the return of Naomi. When confronted
about her identity she told them to call her Mara, which means bitter, and no longer Naomi which
means pleasant. Ruth and Naomi returned at the beginning of the barley harvest and the next day
