3. Objectives
Explain the function of a Windows server in a
network environment
Describe the editions of Windows Server
2008, system requirements and installation
steps
Explain the Server Manager
Explain the primary roles a Windows Server
2008 computer can fulfill
Describe the protection and security tools of
WS 2008
4. WINDOWS SERVER 2008
Windows server 2008 is one of Microsoft Windows’
server lines of operating system based on the
Windows NT architecture.
It is generally capable of providing server-oriented
services, such as ability to host
website(intranet/internet), user management,
resource management across users and applications,
messaging, security and authorization and many
other server-focused services
It features GUI installation and the command-line
interface.
6. Editions of Windows Server
2008
Windows server 2008 Standard edition
Small-medium organizations consisting of a few
hundred users or less
Windows server 2008 Enterprise edition
Large organizations with more needs
Windows server 2008 Datacenter edition
Organizations that run high-powered servers with
considerable resources i.e. very large organizations
Windows server 2008 Web edition
Similar to Standard; user base varies from small
businesses to large corporations. It is designed to function
specifically as Web application server.
12. Server Manager
Server manager is a new console(MMC)
designed to streamline the management of WS
2008 server.
Provides a single interface for installing,
configuring, and removing a variety of server
roles and features on a server
Summarizes server status and configuration
Includes tools to diagnose problems, manage
storage, and perform general configuration
tasks.
18. Active Directory
Active directory is the core of Microsoft’s network
operating system.
Active directory refers to the directory services
(the database) that contains data on all of the
objects within the forest, and it allows
administrators to centrally manage the network.
This database is contained on server hosting the
role of AD DS.
Enables administrators to assign system policies,
deploy software to client computers, and assign
permissions and rights to users of network
resources
19. Active Directory Domain
Services
ADDS are the foundation for distributed
networks built on Windows Server 2008
operating systems that use domain controllers
ADDS stores directory data and manages
communication between users and domains,
including users logon processes,
authentication and directory searches
Administrators use ADDS to organize objects
or elements of a network.
23. DHCP Server
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Server
role provides automatic IP addresses to
computers and other devices that are enabled
as DHCP clients.
DHCP is configured with scopes to identify the
range of available IP addresses to give to
computers on that scope.
The primary tools for managing DHCP servers
are Netsh commands for DHCP and the DHCP
console.
24. DNS Server
A DNS Server provides name resolution for
TCP/IP based networks.
It makes it possible for users of client
computers to use names rather than numeric
IP addresses to identify remote hosts.
When installing ADDS role, you can
automatically install and configure a DNS
server if a DNS server that meets ADDS
requirements cannot be located.

Server role is a major function or service that a server performsA server can be configured for a single role or multiple roles
Server features provide functions that enhance or support an installed role or add a stand-alone function
