Willow Tree Story
There was once a boy who lived in a small village. The boy had blond hair and had very old clothes
like hammy downs. Every single day he would wake up and feed his chickens. His father would
always tell them if you see a fox kill it or it will kill you, so he did what he was told to do. If he saw
a fox he would have to kill it. His mother, on the other hand, was not fond of what her husband
would say to his son, so one night when it was silent and everyone was asleep she woke up her son
and said, "come and I will show you the truth about these animals", and so she did. Outside where
the chickens were, there was this fox all alone under a willow tree. The boy could feel how cold it
was because he could feel the icy wind on his face, so because ... Show more content on

When the boy was feeding the chickens he says the fox still under the willow tree. He walked up to
the fox and said, "why are you still here don't you have a family who misses you?" The fox replied
by saying, " No, my family is dead, all I have is this willow tree." He knew what the boy had done.
"I'm so sorry, said the boy, but it is I who have killed your family." The fox began to cry. The fox
was not mad he was just disappointed, "I thought that you were my friend, "I am sorry, said the boy,
but it is not my fault nor your fault it is my father's fault for it is he who made me think that your
kind was evil." The fox left with sorrow in his heart and so did the boy. When the boy walked into
his cottage the father asked if everything was okay because he could tell that the boy was crying, the
boy replied with, "it's all your fault!" When he was done saying that he stormed off into his bedroom
with every stomp you could hear the anger that he had in his body because of what his father did.
The father was confused what he did so he went upstairs to ask his son what he had done. The boy
said, "you said that animals were evil and I made a friend with one of them and you made me kill its
family, how could you." And with that the father left with regret, he didn't know that these animals
were kind, he was only told by his father like he told his

Hugh Character Analysis
Buffy and her gang were able to capture the hearts of fans all around the world because everyone
could relate to them. They faced everyday problems like high school drama, studying for a final, and
boyfriends. They also kept secrets from the people around them. They were not always honest with
each other. The show is considered to be a metaphor for adolescence and young adulthood. Their
high school is located in Sunnydale, California which is a "Hellmouth." This is a place full of evil
and demonic energy which can be a good way to describe high school. Buffy and her gang fought
demons all the time. These demons represent the obstacles in life that everyone faces everyday. In

the knock and opens her door just as Tara sprints towards her. They both start sprinting down the
stairs and find a laundry room where they lock themselves. Willow tries to barricade the door by
moving a vendor machine using telekinesis but is unable to. Tara observes what she's doing and
joins their hands together to move the vendor machine easily across the room and block the door.

One of the Best Shots Ever Essay
One of the Best Shots Ever
The soft moon rock jumped off the face of the club, as I moved through impact. All I saw was the
perfect arch of the rock as it hurled through the air and over a small rock infested river that runs in
front of the oblong green. I had just pulled off one of the best shots ever in my golf career.
It all started on a brisk August morning. That day I had to get up before the first rays of the sun
could be noticed on the horizon. I awoke to the droning sound of my green digital alarm clock, and
immediately jumped into a hot steaming shower to wake me up from a sleepless night. As I jumped
out of the shower, I realized that I only had thirty minutes to be completely ready and do my
morning warm–up. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I felt as though nothing was going to help me out, so I had to have a perfect short game that day. I
took a venture over to the practice putting green. I noticed that a plethora of golf bags had gathered
on the cement next to the green. My greenside play was where it needed to be but not perfect. I was
as ready for the day as I would ever be.
I started out to my designated tee box. It happened to be one of the farthest away points on the
course. A cart came by that was going to the same place that I was going, so I got a ride. As I stood
on the tee box of hole six, I realized that this hole was one that had plagued me all year long. I had
always been fine right up until my last shot to the green. A creek that ran right in the front of the
green had taken almost every one of my golf balls. I had never completed the shot in a pressure
situation.
First, I faced an upcoming tee shot on a long, dogleg right par 5. I unzipped my baby blue
Hotchkiss/Cedaredge bag and pulled out a brand new shinny sleeve of Ben Hogan golf balls. I teed
up the ball in the uneven front portion of the tee box, and I zeroed in on a weeping willow tree down
the middle–right of the fairway. All I needed was a good drive to start this round. As I approached
the ball I noticed the saplings to my right and wondered if there was any way to shank, hit it straight
right, a wood into them. I cleared my thoughts by concentrating on

Willow Island
On April 27, 1978 in Willow Island West Virginia, there was a failure that occurred that had killed
51 construction workers. At a height of 166 feet a lift was hoisting concrete to continue the
expansion of the Allegheny Power System Power Plant, where it started to collapse. During the
collapse of the crane, the concrete began to unmold and the concrete pummeled the wooden scaffold
that held the 51 construction workers that soon fell to their death (Lew). This incident had left a
devastating effect on several families, but one in particular. Gary Steele retells his account of losing
ten relatives which would include an uncle, four brothers and five cousins ("Willow Island").
Though this family had suffered the most tragic episode perhaps they will ever encounter in their ...

The scaffolding system had been set up in such a way that the concrete must be hoisted in certain
designated spots (as shown in figure above) but due to not following lifting routine it weakened the
integrity of the scaffolding system. There was much blame going around the worksite trying to
determine who was responsible for the scaffold failure. According to Charlestown, W. Va., Gazette,
they reported that there were several accounts of workers complaining that their foreman were
rushing the project and thus not allowing the concrete to solidify enough for the loads that were
placed on it. So the workers blamed management and the foreman, while the supervisors had
blamed the scaffold itself. ("Willow Island"). Though there was much accusations during this
stressful time, the fact remained that whoever may have been responsible did not allow the concrete
that was poured the day previous to reach its maximum strength necessary to withstand the working
load of the scaffold. Allowing the concrete that the workers were scaffolding against giving way to
the load that was placed on it that dreadful morning ("Willow

William Shakespeare's The Barnyard At Butterworth Farm
WILLIAM and Crocco pulled the Gator in the barnyard at Butterworth Farm. Crocco unloaded a
five–gallon bucket full of water from the Housatonic River from the back of the Gator. "Alright, go
park that thing. There's no need to burn anymore gas," William said. Crocco parked the gator in a
shed behind the barn and returned to the barnyard. "So, what's the plan?" Crocco asked. "Where's
that mangy old dog I always see laying around here?" "You mean Flash?" Crocco asked. "Yeah. It's
time for old Flash to take one for the team," William said. Crocco walked into the barn. A moment
later, he returned with one of the farmhands. Walking slowly behind the farmhand was an old
Springer Spaniel. "This is Jack," Crocco said introducing William to the farmhand. "Flash is his
dog." "It's nice to see you again," Jack said, stepping forward and extending his hand. "Have we met
before?" William asked, shaking Jack's hand. "It's been over a decade. I'm not surprised you don't
remember me. I was with you the day you purchased Sleeping Giant. You rode into that vagrant
camp and kicked some ass," Jack said. "Oh, yeah, I remember now." "We still talk about that around
here. You had balls of steel doing that. You must remember Flash, he rode out with us that day,"
Jack said, reaching down and scratching Flash between the ears. "Oh, sure. Flash, huh, it looks like
it's been a long time since he lived up to his name." "He definitely has a little grey on his snout, but

The Complexities and Themes in The Wind in the Willows by...
The story The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is considered by many critics as being one
of many children's classics that every child should read. This book has had many editions, most of
them illustrated, unlike our version; also, we can find various versions of this story as films. This
story at first glance seems to be a very good children's novel, with animals and adventure, however
it is much more than that, first of all this book has very complex words in it that even I had to look
up. In despite of this, the story has themes and adventures that are very child oriented. The themes
of friendship and adventure are what tie this whole book together. A book plot is present in the book,
however, it is not what ties the book and it is not very present until the end of the book. To begin,
the themes are what tie this book together. This is obvious as the book progresses and that no real
plot is evident until the middle of the book. This is because most of the chapters can be read
separately as their own stories. This shows that to Kenneth Grahame, the plot of the story is not
what is important but rather the morals and the themes that he will make very apparent. One of the
themes that Kenneth Grahame incorporates into the story, that is present until the end is the idea of
friendship and of good friends. The whole story is showing how Mole, Badger and Rat who are very
good friends to Toad even though Toad does not appreciate them and listen to them as much as he

The History Of Aspirin And The White Willow Tree...
The history of aspirin is long beginning in 1763 with Edward Stone and is quite extensive including
such names as salicylaldehyde in 1838 and salicylic acid and the white willow tree connection by
the English. Kolbe in about 1850 and 1870 were involved. More recently, the Bayer and Hoffman
companies were participants in some of the most leading contributors to the wide use and
distributive properties of aspirin. The history of aspirin reaches as far back as 330 B.C and its
functions in relieving pain have far exceeded any discoverers imaginations. The use and
consumption of aspirin continues to grow as new methods of the drug become known.
The earliest known use of aspirin was found in the bark of willow trees, in powder form. According
to an article " Aspirin was first produced 110 years ago, but the natural form, salicylic acid, found in
plants ( i.e. the willow and myrtle) has been used for thousands of years."(Aspirin in the Ancient
World) Aspirin in this form was mostly used in the ancient world to reduce pain and fevers. During
the Victorian era, the natural form of aspirin was associated with an awful taste and often induced
upset stomachs and vomiting. Due to this finding, in 1853 a scientist named, Charles Frederic
Gerhardt, was able to add an acetyl group to the natural from of salicylic acid. However, this form
was said to be unstable. (A Victorian Era Discovery)
The history of Aspirin begins in 3000 B.C. with the discovery of a powder with healing

Willow Bark Research Paper
Talk about how willow bark was once used to relive pain but had severe side effects such as internal
bleeding within the stomach The production of aspirin begins salicylic acid which has been derived
from the active site of salicin found in willow bark. This is done through multi–step process where
substrates of salicin are converted into more basic products such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid
cannot be consumed by itself due to the fact that it is bitter and irritates the stomach causing side
effects such as nausea and internal bleeding within the stomach. This is due to the fact that salicylic
acid exists in protonated form in the stomach; therefore, the pH of the salicylic acid is low, thus
affecting the lining of the stomach. Therefore, to stabilise salicylic acid, it is synthesized into
acetylsalicylic acid also known as aspirin. Acetylsalicylic acid is not pronated in the stomach and
thus, the pH of acetylsalicylic acid is not as low compared to salicylic acid, thus it does not affect
the lining of the stomach as much compared to salicylic acid.
Salicylic acid can by synthesized into acetylsalicylic acid through a process known as esterification.
Esterification occurs when a carboxylic acid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The synthesis of nitrobenzene would begin with the reaction between the benzene of the aspirin
reacting with nitric acid with the products of nitrobenzene and water. Sulphuric acid would also be
required as a catalyst due to the fact that sulphuric acid is hygroscopic and thus absorbs the water
being produced; therefore, the equilibrium shifts to the right, thus increasing the production
nitrobenzene. The temperature during this reaction would need to remain around 55̊C to prevent
more than one nitro group being substituted onto the ring and thus making it toxic. This reaction can
be shown in the following

The Lost and Found Cup
I was devastated after our last fish incident with Guppy and Lunah. They meant everything to me
and now they were gone. My dad told me that whenever I was ready to start looking for another pet,
he would think about it. After about two months, I thought I wanted another fish, however
sometimes when your views change, its for the better. That's what happened when I laid eyes on
Willow Cupcake Blain for the first time. She was all tan with Teddy Bear Hamster markings on her
torso to her stomach that were white, yes she was the most feisyeyest hamster that I have ever seen,

hamster that was all tan with white markings screams at the top of her lungs and kept trying to bite
him. We immediately started laughing when the other hamster that was all grey and in the house
with that hamster followed her around and tried to snuggle up with her to sleep. Then there was

The day she died was the day after my best friend, Daniel Knife committed suicide. I didn't realize it
at first, but I kept getting this weird feeling ever since they died. Everything was different. The next
morning I felt the need to go see her grave again. When I arrived there, a weeping willow tree had
grown on her grave with my wife's name carved in it. I heard voices around me whispering "Cole,
Cole, Cole...." It sounded just like my wife, Sami. I turned to leave but then saw something out of
the corner of my eye. As I looked back I saw Sami standing there in front of the tree. I closed my
eyes, shook my head and checked again. She was still there. I closed my eyes again but even tighter,
shook my head harder and when I opened my eyes. She was gone.

The Wind in the Willows Essay
The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows (published in 1908) by Kenneth Grahame is a children's fictional novel set
in England during the early 20th century. This allegory from the stimulus booklet evokes feelings of
magic and adventure but also feelings of reflection as we relate the actions of Ratty, Mole and Toad
to our lives.Grahame evokes an imaginative journey within the mind of the reader as he questions
"Which journey's do we take that we really want to experience?" Kenneth Grahame conveys this
idea through Mole who is being forced to take Ratty's journey instead of his own. This text broadens
our understanding of the world today in that it helps us to undertsand the complex interactions
between people.

Camps, villages, town's cities". This vivid description of what he anticipates creates imagery in the
minds of the audience allowing them to enter the imaginative realm of Toads journey.
In this extract Kenneth Grahame creates exaggeration within the characters to effectively fuel the
imagination of the audience. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the
different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For
example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling
and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can
interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because
they are able to picture them in their imagination.
The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in
the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to
Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be
evoked in the audiences imagination.
'The Wind in the Willows' uses the technique of anthropomorphism. This feature is visually
appealing to the audience as the animals seem less threatening and it sends the reader into a fantasy
world full of magical and adventurous thoughts. The audience can effectively engage with the
human traits shown by the

Salicylic acid is an extract of willow bark, and Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder knew that this
bark could ease pain and reduce fevers. Although Reverend Edward Stone was the one who noted
that the willow bark was effective in reducing fever, due to the salicylic acid, back in 1763, it caused
damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth and esophagus, which caused hemorrhaging of the
stomach lining. It was a scientist at the Bayer Company in Germany that noted the salicylic acid
contained a phenol group that might cause the damage. He then decided to modify the acid by
forming an ester with two–carbon acetyl group. As a result, the substance created was acetylsalicylic
acid: aspirin. To prepare the aspirin, the first materials needed are 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask,
salicylic acid, and electric balance. First, I weighed the Erlenmeyer flask with the electric balance

The Wind in the Willows: Kenneth Grahame and Neopaganism
The beauty of the English countryside––cultivated or wild, pastoral or primeval, it was an endless
source of inspiration for eighteenth–century Romantic poets. Such notables as Wordsworth, Keats,
and Shelley envisioned ancient and exotic Hellenic gods in familiar, typically British settings.
Douglas Bush says of Keats, "For him the common sights of Hampstead Heath could suggest how

I can look back and trace the evolution in my own thought from Presbyterian to pagan; it was harder
to envision a course of events that would result in the frankly Romantic mythology of "The Piper"
growing from the Scottish Calvinist soil of a Victorian banker. The insights of Grahame biographer
Peter Green, although some of his interpretations were contradicted by other sources, helped in the
formation of a plausible explanation. I have come to believe that Kenneth Grahame's treatment of
Nature and pagan themes went beyond the general Victorian/Edwardian tendency to idealize the
countryside, and reflected alienation from society and his own life's circumstances.
An understanding of the literary traditions influencing a Mid–Victorian like Grahame is a logical
starting point. Douglas Bush, in Mythology and the Romantic Tradition in English Poetry , relates
that "Browning liked to think of Pan as the shaggy goat–god, benevolent or amorous; Keats . . .
reveled in details, half real, half fanciful, or primitive pastoral life, and . . . Shelley's Pan . . . is as
disembodied as Ariel" (137). Actually, "Pan" was a sort of allegorical shorthand, emblematic of
sentimentality, passionate emotion, and recoil from reason and the "mechanical conception of the
world" (43). Nature, once an assortment of phenomena

Music in Othello
Music in Othello
In Cyprus, observing the joyous reunion of Othello and Desdemona, Iago says to himself that he
will wreck the lovers' harmony: "O, you are well tuned now! / But I'll set down the pegs that make
this music, / As honest as I am" (2.1.199–201). The "pegs" to which he refers are the tuning pegs on
a stringed instrument. Their love is the instrument on which Iago is planning to loosen ("set down")
the pegs until the harmony is turned into discord. [Scene Summary]
Because no one like to be a party–pooper, Iago sings drinking songs in order to encourage Cassio to
get drunk. Drinking songs tend to be rollicking, jolly justifications of drinking. Iago's first song

Othello's occupation's gone! (3.3.345–357)
The music of war, including the thunder of the cannon, makes Othello feel alive, fully himself, but
without Desdemona's love he feels that he's nothing. [Scene Summary]
Shortly after Othello has berated Desdemona about the handkerchief, Cassio appears to once again
ask Desdemona to intervene on his behalf. She tells him that "My advocation is not now in tune; /
My lord is not my lord; nor should I know him, / Were he in favour [appearance] as in humour
[attitude] alter'd" (3.4.123–125). In other words, now is not a good time to talk to Othello; he's not
himself, and if his appearance had changed as much as his attitude, she wouldn't recognize him. The
phrase "in tune" is so common (in Shakespeare's time as well as ours) that it may be a stretch to call
it a musical image. [Scene Summary]
At a moment when Iago is trying to build Othello's jealousy into a murderous rage, Othello begins
to think of what a beautiful, sweet woman Desdemona is. Iago tells him that he needs to put such
thoughts out of his mind, and Othello says, "Hang her! I do but say what she is. So delicate with her
needle. An admirable musician! O, she will sing the savageness out of a bear" (4.1.187–189).
However, it's not Desdemona's music, but Iago's words that win the battle for Othello's soul.
Othello's mood becomes ever more savage, and he plans the time, place, and manner of

The Life of a Sheep Eater
I woke suddenly as the cool morning air bit at my face, telling me it was nearly morning and another
day had begun. I am seventeen today which means that today will be the day I ask Alma's parents if
they'll allow us to have a courtship. That was the only thing on my mind when I heard my father
calling me, knowing we needed to eat before we left on a hunt.
"Little Wolf, hurry and get out here, we need to get our supplies together before we leave!" my
father shouted from outside our temporary wikiup. Hurriedly, I put on my sheep hide leggings and
grabbed my moccasins on the way out. After eating, we grabbed our bows and met with some other
men from the tribe to leave for the busy day ahead. Today's hunting plan was to take fifteen of our
dogs with us and have some men hide higher up in the mountain so that when the sheep were scared
upward, they could shoot and kill them. It was my turn to hide out higher up on the mountain with
Walks Without Sound and Horseless, two of the best bowmen in the tribe. My father and six other
men were at the bottom of the mountain to scare the sheep up to where we are hidden. I hear the
dogs howling and sheep stirring as the sound of my heart beats loudly in my ears. I feel the

approaching swiftly, we stand with our bows aimed. I release my arrow and hit the largest sheep in
sight. The thud of the body hitting the ground

Jan Baptist van Helmont: Willow Tree experiment In "The Willow Tree experiment" Jan Baptist van
Helmont said that; If you only water a willow tree, then it will grow like a regular tree. In the
experiment he used just a regular willow tree and distilled/rainwater. He changed whether he used
rainwater, or distilled water to water the tree. Though he kept the plant the same (Willow Tree.)
There wasn't anything van Helmont was basing the experiment on. The willow tree grew from 5
pounds to 169 pounds after 5 years of growth. Jan Baptist van Helmont concluded that a willow tree
can grow completely from just water. He did not account for the weight of leaves that fell off every

Jan Igenhousz: Elodea & Bubbles
In 1779 Jan Igenhousz conducted a very important experiment about photosynthesis. This
experiment consisted of a plant with soil in a jar of water that was exposed to sunlight, and then
same plant in the jar of water, but in darkness. He thought if i put a plant in water and expose it in
sunlight, then it will produce bubbles. First he submerged the plant in a jar full of water. The
sunlight from outside was beaming onto the plant. Because of this
Igenhousz noticed that the plant was producing bubbles from its leaves. So Jan Igenhousz then put
the same plant, and jar with water, but this time the plant was put in complete darkness. This time he
noticed that the bubbles stopped forming. After gathering the gas that the plant was producing
Igenhousz then started to test the gas to find out what it was. He eventually found out that when the
plant was exposed to sunlight it produced oxygen! On the other hand when the plant was in
darkness then

My Passion For Science
My passion for science and plants began early in my childhood and has grown substantially to that
which energizes me to chase after higher goals. I used to obsessively search for information on wild
plants that were edible and had medicinal properties. Now, I find that I am continually amazed by
research on the photosynthetic pathway along with biochemistry within plants in general. I was, and
still am, enthralled by the idea that so much knowledge and novelty is within the organisms that I
had appreciated since I was young. I believe that this passion was driven further by being able to
compare, for myself, a life spent in remedial labor and one with scientific exploration. Needing to
work in my family's business for years out of necessity placed me in a position where I saw how
each action could either draw me from or towards a better lifestyle. These experiences have
personally shown me the value in a program like the Leadership Alliance, whose purpose offers a
means to be a part of a diverse cohort striving toward leadership in the world. Having the
opportunity to be included in a community with such a goal and momentum would be phenomenal.
It would allow me to continue pursuing graduate and post–graduate level education while also
refining me into a monumental force in the field of scientific research. I desire to pursue my passion
of photosynthesis, plants, and biochemistry to serve the world with a team of researchers.

Aspirin And Plants : Aspirin
Aspirin And Plants
What is Aspirin? Acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin, has a chemical formula of
C9H804. Aspirin is one of the first drugs in the world that came to a common use with about 35,000
metric tons that are annually used and consumed by people all over the world. Aspirin is commonly
used to relieve people from pain of headaches and reduces the temperatures of fevers. Aspirin is also
used to sooth a scratchy throat, relieving pain from bug–bites, wiping away rust marks, and clearing
dandruff problems. Most of these problems consist of aspirin to dissolve in water to create a
solution.
Facts & Chemical Compositions of Aspirin Aspirin was a chemical substance that was created in
1899, by a scientist who worked in the Bayer company of Germany. But before the actual "Aspirin"
that we have now was created; thousands of years ago, doctors of Native American tribes, actual
Indians, Ancient Greeks, and even Ancient Egyptians used the bark and leaves from willow trees to
relieve aches and pains. Later on 3 scientist, Brungnatelli, Fontana, and Johann Buchner, discovered
that the Willow tree contained salicin, a naturally occurring flammatory substance. Then a key
composition was added to the list of ingredients over a 100 years ago when something called
acetylsalicylic acid, was founded. In the 1970 's researchers learned that a chemical substance
named prostaglandins, was found in Aspirin, this substance is connected to the pain

My First Day Of School
I remember the day so vividly, like it was yesterday. My family and I lived in a small, two story
house, in the middle of town. I woke up that morning, for my very first day of school. I got out of
bed and walked past my little brothers room, then past my parents and to the bathroom. I showered,
brushed my and then my teeth. I walked back to my room and got ready for my first day of school. I
had just turned three and my mom wanted to put me in preschool right away. I walked down the
spiral staircase, ( my favorite part of the house). When I got down stairs my mom was making
breakfast. My little sisters and brother awake, with my mom down stairs waiting for me. My
younger brother and sister were waiting at the table for me. My mom set down my other little sister
in her playpen. She then came to the kitchen, and gave me and my little sister and brother are
breakfast. My mom asked me if I was ready for my first day of school and I said yes. I was so
excited for that day. My siblings and I ate are breakfast, then we went outside to wait for the bus to
pick me up. It was a quite chilly day. The wind was blowing that day. And the old weeping willow
tree was swaying in the wind. The back yard had a wooden fence around it. And the front had a wire
fence around it. The bus finally came to get me. As I walked to get on the bus my sister and brother
waved goodbye. My best friend and I walked to the buys together. The bus was a little one, only
about five seats. It was yellow and had stickers all over it, very colorful.
When my friend and I got on the bus, we sat next to each other. The bus stopped at a couple more
stops. Finally after being on the bus for what felt like a decade, we were at the school. My friend
and I walked into school together, very excited. There was a little P.E. room and a hallway full of

Theme Of The Wind In The Willow
Pastoral Themes in the Wind & the Willows
Pastoral works refer to a genre of literature that focuses on the bucolic aspects of nature and the
countryside. The English countryside represents the ideal location for a pastoral work. One such
work is the Edwardian children's story, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Since its
publication in 1908, the story has become a beloved children's classic. However, the story represents
Edwardian society in England, and uses anthropomorphized animals to represent Edwardian men.
As a pastoral work, the events of the story occur in the English countryside, where the animals work
together to care for the wild one in their group, Mr. Toad. Mr. Toad's "Wild Ride" through he

The author used the background of a pastoral vision to help elucidate the characteristics of
Edwardian society. Mr. Toad is one of the most known characters from the work. He is extremely
wealthy and essentially bored with his life. His English country life does not offer him fulfillment.
As such, he jumps from interest to interest, quickly grabbing at new hobbies. As a wealthy landed
scion, he has the luxury of this lifestyle. From the earliest mentions of his home, Toad Hall, it
becomes apparent that he represents the landed gentry. Rat points out his home from the river. "The
stables are over there to the right. That's the banqueting–hall you're looking at now–very old, that is.
Toad is rather rich, you know" (Grahame 19). Toad quickly changes his interests, spending the
money his father left him. Rat describes this character flaw of Toad: "'Boating is out. He's tired of it,
and done with it. I wonder what new fad he has taken up now?'" (Grahame 21). Toad quickly takes
up motoring as his new hobby. Motoring referred to the hobby of driving and racing cars, something
only the wealthy could afford at this time. All of this is discussed as the characters take a slow ride
down the river and then sit quietly in the countryside. An outdoor luncheon helps to create the image
of the setting. The English countryside represents the perfect pastoral setting, and the characters all
seem to enjoy

Character Analysis Of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The...
The novel The Wind in the Willows portrayed numerous aspects of the author Kenneth Grahame's
life within its contents. Some of these aspects included social, psychological, and other components
of the author's life. Within his book parts of his life included were the people from his life. These
people were Kenneth Grahame's father, his son Alastair, and his friend Sir Arthur Quiller–Couch.
One of the people from his life who was transformed into a memorable character was his son
Alastair. The Wind in the Willows was a novel based on bedtime stories about the character named
Toad, the stories of which were told to Alastair in effort to soothe him to sleep. When Kenneth took
the stories and adapted them into a novel, he used qualities from his son and used them in the
character Mole. Mole could easily be described as a mild mannered, as well as home loving animal.
He was the first character to be introduced in the story. Within the first chapter of the novel Mole
ventured outside of his underground home. Soon after coming outside Mole realized the fast moving
pace of life around the riverbank. Although cautious at first, Mole soon adapted with help from his
new found friends. Since birth Alastair had complications that made life increasingly more difficult
as he grew up. One of the largest complications that was faced by Alastair was that he was blinded
in one eye since birth. While also faced with other disabilities, Alastair's problem was the blindness
he retained. Similar to how Mole adapted to his surroundings by the riverbank, Alastair adapted to
life with disabilities while keeping a mild mannered attitude. In addition to the adaptation, Alastair
accepted help from many people like his father and mother like Mole accepted help from his
friends. Mole went through complications as well throughout the chapters within the novel. One of
these complications is how when Mole became impatient to meet Badger and went off on his own to
find him, leading to him becoming lost in the woods until his friend Rat finds him. A complication
similar to what Mole went through was how Alastair got ejected from many different schools until
finally a school called Christ Church accepted him. This memorable character of Mole can

Willow's leg as Francis jumped over him. The black and white tom raked his claws down Ash's

Willow could barely snarl before Francis dug his claws into her throat. She shoved him off, only
making the cut bigger. "Francis! That's enough!" Ash cried. Francis looked at the smaller black cat,
rage burning in his strange eyes. "Francis, do you hear me!? I said stop!" Ash snarled, as Francis

Ash couldn't protest before Francis was on top of him, digging his claws into the black fur where his

Analysis Of The Centauur By May Swenson
Imagination is used to back away from reality and enter a new world. Most children use their
imagination for this reason, they turn into animals to lose control of themselves and become
someone else. The girl in the poem,"The Centaur," by May Swenson, the imaginary horse was used
to both replace her brother and remember him. She uses her imagination to reminisce and cope with
her loss. The gendered pronouns were used to refer to her brother along with metaphor and
zoomorphism that helped contribute to the overall theme and idea of the poem.
In the flashback when the girl was ten, she referred to her brother's possessions constantly. Although
her brother has seemed to be passed away, in her imagination he is actually there. "I'd go on my two
bare feet. But when, with my brother's jack–knife, I had cut me a long limber horse." In the girl's
imagination, she uses her brother's knife to cut her a long limber horse; however, with the use of
vehicle, it shows that in reality the girl is cutting a branch off the willow tree. Her brother is one of
the memories from her past, and by imagining, she remembers him. "Except a few leaves for the
tail, and cinched my brother's belt around his head for a rein" the male horse replaces the brother
and by constantly using her brother's possessions, she is able to cope with her the loss of her brother
and remember him again.
In the "Centaur" by May Swenson, the author uses zoomorphism to give animal qualities to human
things, and throughout the poem tenor and vehicle were used. Tenor is used when something is
actually present and vehicle is used when something is not present. In the poem, the girl blurs her
identity with the horse's, "that talcumed over his hoofs, hiding my toes, and turning his feet to swift
half moons." The girl believes that she is transforming into a horse or in reality, becoming her
brother. With the use of zoomorphism, the author is able to show that the horse reminds her of her
brother, causing her to follow in her brother's footsteps because she misses him. "My head and neck
were mine, yet they were shaped like a horse." The girl believes she is transforming into a horse,
and with her imagination she is able to manage with this idea because it is a

Descriptive Essay On The Beauty Of A House
She paced the border of her property, three times she has gone around, I had been counting. I am
curious to know how many more revolutions she will make in the next hour. She has yet to notice
my presence under a thick layer of underbrush underneath a willow tree, strangled in buckthorn. The
medieval looking weed crawls all the way up the trunk, suffocating each of its branches. Similar to
how my foster mother has been treating me. Here, I hide out, escaping her grasps as long as I can.
The women is now out of sight now as she paces behind her house back by the small pond. The
reflection of the setting sun bounces of the water, a blinding array of colors. Yellow. Orange. Pink. It
will be dark soon, and my foster mother will commence her journey to find me. The house is made
of deep Burgundy brick and the shingles look a if they could fall off at any moment. Vines that hug
her house seem to be sucking all the cleanliness out of the pond, as it is a musty brown color.
Another willow tree covers half of the lake and blocks the right side of the house from the sun. A
broken wooden ladder leans against the left side of the house, engulfed by vines. Wind howls
through the strange statues scattered across her yard and shivers creep up my spine. Some of my
unease is soothed when I observe the beautiful garden that borders the house. The flowers are bright
and lively, contrasting the appearance of the house and the pond.
At this time, the lady approaches an elm tree on the left side of her house and looks straight up and
mutters aloud, as if in conversation with a fellow human being. Odd. She seems offput as she looks

straight towards me. My heart races and I duck further into the underbrush. At once, she leaps
forward, directly in front of me and her eyes pierce through mine. I envision myself scrambling
away, my heart is pounding, yet I am frozen, locked in her gaze. My heart has made its way up my
throat as she comes closer. She cautiously pulls away several branches away, uncovering my hiding

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode 410
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode 410 "Hush," a group of demon–like creatures known as The
Gentlemen take over Sunnydale, stealing the voices of everyone in the town and the hearts of seven
random people. At this point in the series Buffy and Willow start college and Buffy meets a boy
named Riley, who is a teacher's aide in their class. During class Buffy has a dream of a little girl
holding a wooden box who is singing a cryptic rhyme about The Gentlemen that says things like
"Can't even shout" and "Can't say a word." After class Riley tries to get Buffy to tell him about her
dream, but she tells him "I'm not saying a word." The episode then goes to Xander and his girlfriend
Anya. Anya is upset with Xander for never asking about how she feels, and tells him "we never
talk." The scenes foreshadow all the characters taking their voices for granted, and becoming
overwhelmed when they are misinterpreted. When The Gentlemen steal their voices, it causes them
to not be able to talk to each other, making them realize how important communication really is. In
"'Tough Enough': Female Friendship and Heroism," Sharon Ross focuses on the importance of a
new vision of heroism, by discussing epistemic negotiation. The chapter also discusses how
important both female friendships, and group friendships, can be in helping to fight crime. The main
idea of epistemic negotiation is shown throughout the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer because
Buffy "almost always consults with her friends

My Love Of Love And Love In My Life
In my life, I have always tried to find things that make my life more joyful and peaceful, and there
really are three things that I can think of to best illustrate my love for peace and joy. The first is the
willow sapling that, to me, represents the joy of my childhood. The second is the guitar that I first
learned to play on, that represents my love of music and the peace that I get from it. The third is the
postcard I brought back from New Zealand that represents my love of travel and adventure and the
joy that it brings me. These things are the most important to me because they remind me to always
seek joy and peace in my life.
The first of three items that are most impactful in my life is the willow sapling we used to play with
as kids. Somewhere, lying on mossy green stones along the ruby river in Montana is a sprig of
willow, if it is not gone by now. A long time ago, way back when my family and I used to visit our
cousin's ranch, my sister, my cousins, and I would all go down to where small, rocky covered in
young willow trees islands sprung out of the ruby river, separated by thin sheet sheets of quickly
flowing icy cold water. We would divide up the islands and resources, then get into teams of two.
My sister and I would always inevitably end up paired together, which didn't bother me, but she

When he noticed my interest, he offered to tech me a few chords, so we both climbed up on a big
flat boulder, and while the light onshore wind misted us with the spray from the waves, my dad
taught me my first song on guitar. I played for hours on end, practicing and practicing, until that
night around the campfire, surrounded by all our friends, I played it next to my dad all the way
through. That only started my love for music, and every year my love for music grows and grows,
and in it, I find an easy, peaceful

his opponent. Finally making it to the castle Bruce sees Griffin the massive lion he will be facing in
his challenge. Griffin walks to Bruce with his great canine teeth and says, " You should go home
now before I make a fool out of you!" Bruce towering over the lion replies " When you see me
standing in arms with Queen Panthera, then you will see who is really the fool." Griffin bumps into
Bruce and his smile slides off his face as he slowly walks. Griffin and Bruce both lined up at the
courtyard, everybody roaring to the tops of their lungs, following after is silence, a silence that can

The Willows Research Paper
A teen boy named Bobbert Dickinson who is in love with horror hears about a "haunted" asylum
called The Willows. The Willows is said to have been shut down after multiple inmates died either
by committing suicide or by murder, although prisoners who had died by murder were in
impenetrable cells. They had all complained about being tormented during the night by evil spirits.
No one believed them of course because they were at an asylum and they were crazy so yeah. After
persuading his two best friends into joining him as they explored the asylum. They determined they
would ride their bikes instead of driving. As they approached The Willows, they felt a strange
coolness and a breeze that had been absent a moment before. They decided it

Willow Tree Story

  • 1. Willow Tree Story There was once a boy who lived in a small village. The boy had blond hair and had very old clothes like hammy downs. Every single day he would wake up and feed his chickens. His father would always tell them if you see a fox kill it or it will kill you, so he did what he was told to do. If he saw a fox he would have to kill it. His mother, on the other hand, was not fond of what her husband would say to his son, so one night when it was silent and everyone was asleep she woke up her son and said, "come and I will show you the truth about these animals", and so she did. Outside where the chickens were, there was this fox all alone under a willow tree. The boy could feel how cold it was because he could feel the icy wind on his face, so because ... He knew what the boy had done. "I'm so sorry, said the boy, but it is I who have killed your family." The fox began to cry. The fox was not mad he was just disappointed, "I thought that you were my friend, "I am sorry, said the boy, but it is not my fault nor your fault it is my father's fault for it is he who made me think that your kind was evil." The fox left with sorrow in his heart and so did the boy. When the boy walked into his cottage the father asked if everything was okay because he could tell that the boy was crying, the boy replied with, "it's all your fault!" When he was done saying that he stormed off into his bedroom with every stomp you could hear the anger that he had in his body because of what his father did. The father was confused what he did so he went upstairs to ask his son what he had done. The boy said, "you said that animals were evil and I made a friend with one of them and you made me kill its family, how could you." • 3. One of the Best Shots Ever Essay One of the Best Shots Ever The soft moon rock jumped off the face of the club, as I moved through impact. All I saw was the perfect arch of the rock as it hurled through the air and over a small rock infested river that runs in front of the oblong green. I had just pulled off one of the best shots ever in my golf career. It all started on a brisk August morning. That day I had to get up before the first rays of the sun could be noticed on the horizon. I awoke to the droning sound of my green digital alarm clock, and immediately jumped into a hot steaming shower to wake me up from a sleepless night. As I jumped out of the shower, I realized that I only had thirty minutes to be completely ready and do my morning warm–up. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I felt as though nothing was going to help me out, so I had to have a perfect short game that day. I took a venture over to the practice putting green. I noticed that a plethora of golf bags had gathered on the cement next to the green. My greenside play was where it needed to be but not perfect. I was as ready for the day as I would ever be. I started out to my designated tee box. It happened to be one of the farthest away points on the course. A cart came by that was going to the same place that I was going, so I got a ride. As I stood on the tee box of hole six, I realized that this hole was one that had plagued me all year long. I had always been fine right up until my last shot to the green. A creek that ran right in the front of the green had taken almost every one of my golf balls. I had never completed the shot in a pressure situation. First, I faced an upcoming tee shot on a long, dogleg right par 5. I unzipped my baby blue Hotchkiss/Cedaredge bag and pulled out a brand new shinny sleeve of Ben Hogan golf balls. I teed up the ball in the uneven front portion of the tee box, and I zeroed in on a weeping willow tree down the middle–right of the fairway. All I needed was a good drive to start this round. As I approached the ball I noticed the saplings to my right and wondered if there was any way to shank, hit it straight right, a wood into them. I cleared my thoughts by concentrating on ... • 4. Willow Island On April 27, 1978 in Willow Island West Virginia, there was a failure that occurred that had killed 51 construction workers. At a height of 166 feet a lift was hoisting concrete to continue the expansion of the Allegheny Power System Power Plant, where it started to collapse. During the collapse of the crane, the concrete began to unmold and the concrete pummeled the wooden scaffold that held the 51 construction workers that soon fell to their death (Lew). This incident had left a devastating effect on several families, but one in particular. Gary Steele retells his account of losing ten relatives which would include an uncle, four brothers and five cousins ("Willow Island"). Though this family had suffered the most tragic episode perhaps they will ever encounter in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scaffolding system had been set up in such a way that the concrete must be hoisted in certain designated spots (as shown in figure above) but due to not following lifting routine it weakened the integrity of the scaffolding system. There was much blame going around the worksite trying to determine who was responsible for the scaffold failure. According to Charlestown, W. Va., Gazette, they reported that there were several accounts of workers complaining that their foreman were rushing the project and thus not allowing the concrete to solidify enough for the loads that were placed on it. So the workers blamed management and the foreman, while the supervisors had blamed the scaffold itself. ("Willow Island"). Though there was much accusations during this stressful time, the fact remained that whoever may have been responsible did not allow the concrete that was poured the day previous to reach its maximum strength necessary to withstand the working load of the scaffold. • 5. William Shakespeare's The Barnyard At Butterworth Farm WILLIAM and Crocco pulled the Gator in the barnyard at Butterworth Farm. Crocco unloaded a five–gallon bucket full of water from the Housatonic River from the back of the Gator. "Alright, go park that thing. There's no need to burn anymore gas," William said. Crocco parked the gator in a shed behind the barn and returned to the barnyard. "So, what's the plan?" Crocco asked. "Where's that mangy old dog I always see laying around here?" "You mean Flash?" • 6. The Complexities and Themes in The Wind in the Willows by... The story The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is considered by many critics as being one of many children's classics that every child should read. This book has had many editions, most of them illustrated, unlike our version; also, we can find various versions of this story as films. This story at first glance seems to be a very good children's novel, with animals and adventure, however it is much more than that, first of all this book has very complex words in it that even I had to look up. In despite of this, the story has themes and adventures that are very child oriented. The themes of friendship and adventure are what tie this whole book together. A book plot is present in the book, however, it is not what ties the book and it is not very present until the end of the book. To begin, the themes are what tie this book together. This is obvious as the book progresses and that no real plot is evident until the middle of the book. This is because most of the chapters can be read separately as their own stories. This shows that to Kenneth Grahame, the plot of the story is not what is important but rather the morals and the themes that he will make very apparent. One of the themes that Kenneth Grahame incorporates into the story, that is present until the end is the idea of friendship and of good friends. The whole story is showing how Mole, Badger and Rat who are very good friends to Toad even though Toad does not appreciate them and listen to them as much as he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The History Of Aspirin And The White Willow Tree... The history of aspirin is long beginning in 1763 with Edward Stone and is quite extensive including such names as salicylaldehyde in 1838 and salicylic acid and the white willow tree connection by the English. Kolbe in about 1850 and 1870 were involved. More recently, the Bayer and Hoffman companies were participants in some of the most leading contributors to the wide use and distributive properties of aspirin. The history of aspirin reaches as far back as 330 B.C and its functions in relieving pain have far exceeded any discoverers imaginations. The use and consumption of aspirin continues to grow as new methods of the drug become known. The earliest known use of aspirin was found in the bark of willow trees, in powder form. According to an article " Aspirin was first produced 110 years ago, but the natural form, salicylic acid, found in plants ( i.e. the willow and myrtle) has been used for thousands of years."(Aspirin in the Ancient World) Aspirin in this form was mostly used in the ancient world to reduce pain and fevers. During the Victorian era, the natural form of aspirin was associated with an awful taste and often induced upset stomachs and vomiting. Due to this finding, in 1853 a scientist named, Charles Frederic Gerhardt, was able to add an acetyl group to the natural from of salicylic acid. However, this form was said to be unstable. • 8. Willow Bark Research Paper Talk about how willow bark was once used to relive pain but had severe side effects such as internal bleeding within the stomach The production of aspirin begins salicylic acid which has been derived from the active site of salicin found in willow bark. This is done through multi–step process where substrates of salicin are converted into more basic products such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid cannot be consumed by itself due to the fact that it is bitter and irritates the stomach causing side effects such as nausea and internal bleeding within the stomach. This is due to the fact that salicylic acid exists in protonated form in the stomach; therefore, the pH of the salicylic acid is low, thus affecting the lining of the stomach. Therefore, to stabilise salicylic acid, it is synthesized into acetylsalicylic acid also known as aspirin. Acetylsalicylic acid is not pronated in the stomach and thus, the pH of acetylsalicylic acid is not as low compared to salicylic acid, thus it does not affect the lining of the stomach as much compared to salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can by synthesized into acetylsalicylic acid through a process known as esterification. Esterification occurs when a carboxylic acid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this extract Kenneth Grahame creates exaggeration within the characters to effectively fuel the imagination of the audience. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because they are able to picture them in their imagination. The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be evoked in the audiences imagination. 'The Wind in the Willows' uses the technique of anthropomorphism. This feature is visually appealing to the audience as the animals seem less threatening and it sends the reader into a fantasy world full of magical and adventurous thoughts. Although Reverend Edward Stone was the one who noted that the willow bark was effective in reducing fever, due to the salicylic acid, back in 1763, it caused damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth and esophagus, which caused hemorrhaging of the stomach lining. It was a scientist at the Bayer Company in Germany that noted the salicylic acid contained a phenol group that might cause the damage. He then decided to modify the acid by forming an ester with two–carbon acetyl group. As a result, the substance created was acetylsalicylic acid: aspirin. To prepare the aspirin, the first materials needed are 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask, salicylic acid, and electric balance. First, I weighed the Erlenmeyer flask with the electric balance and I got 95.07 grams. The Wind in the Willows: Kenneth Grahame and Neopaganism The beauty of the English countryside––cultivated or wild, pastoral or primeval, it was an endless source of inspiration for eighteenth–century Romantic poets. Such notables as Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley envisioned ancient and exotic Hellenic gods in familiar, typically British settings. Douglas Bush says of Keats, "For him the common sights of Hampstead Heath could suggest how poets had first conceived of fauns and dryads, of Psyche and Pan and Narcissus and Endymion" ( Pagan Myth 46). Later writers, clearly influenced by the Romantic world view, would describe idealized pastoral scenes in terms of "the rich meadow–grass . . . of a freshness and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I can look back and trace the evolution in my own thought from Presbyterian to pagan; it was harder to envision a course of events that would result in the frankly Romantic mythology of "The Piper" growing from the Scottish Calvinist soil of a Victorian banker. The insights of Grahame biographer Peter Green, although some of his interpretations were contradicted by other sources, helped in the formation of a plausible explanation. I have come to believe that Kenneth Grahame's treatment of Nature and pagan themes went beyond the general Victorian/Edwardian tendency to idealize the countryside, and reflected alienation from society and his own life's circumstances. An understanding of the literary traditions influencing a Mid–Victorian like Grahame is a logical starting point. Douglas Bush, in Mythology and the Romantic Tradition in English Poetry , relates that "Browning liked to think of Pan as the shaggy goat–god, benevolent or amorous; Keats . . . reveled in details, half real, half fanciful, or primitive pastoral life, and . . . Shelley's Pan . . . is as disembodied as Ariel" (137). Actually, "Pan" was a sort of allegorical shorthand, emblematic of sentimentality, passionate emotion, and recoil from reason and the "mechanical conception of the world" (43). • 26. Willow Tree Experiment Research of Photosynthesis By: Daniel Ortiz Biology 1 1st hour Jan Baptist van Helmont: Willow Tree experiment In "The Willow Tree experiment" Jan Baptist van Helmont said that; If you only water a willow tree, then it will grow like a regular tree. In the experiment he used just a regular willow tree and distilled/rainwater. He changed whether he used rainwater, or distilled water to water the tree. Though he kept the plant the same (Willow Tree.) There wasn't anything van Helmont was basing the experiment on. The willow tree grew from 5 pounds to 169 pounds after 5 years of growth. Jan Baptist van Helmont concluded that a willow tree can grow completely from just water. He did not account for the weight of leaves that fell off every autumn ... (l.c.p.#2) Jan Igenhousz: Elodea & Bubbles In 1779 Jan Igenhousz conducted a very important experiment about photosynthesis. This experiment consisted of a plant with soil in a jar of water that was exposed to sunlight, and then same plant in the jar of water, but in darkness. He thought if i put a plant in water and expose it in sunlight, then it will produce bubbles. First he submerged the plant in a jar full of water. The sunlight from outside was beaming onto the plant. Because of this Igenhousz noticed that the plant was producing bubbles from its leaves. So Jan Igenhousz then put the same plant, and jar with water, but this time the plant was put in complete darkness. This time he noticed that the bubbles stopped forming. After gathering the gas that the plant was producing Igenhousz then started to test the gas to find out what it was. He eventually found out that when the plant was exposed to sunlight it produced oxygen! On the other hand when the plant was in darkness then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. My Passion For Science My passion for science and plants began early in my childhood and has grown substantially to that which energizes me to chase after higher goals. I used to obsessively search for information on wild plants that were edible and had medicinal properties. Now, I find that I am continually amazed by research on the photosynthetic pathway along with biochemistry within plants in general. I was, and still am, enthralled by the idea that so much knowledge and novelty is within the organisms that I had appreciated since I was young. I believe that this passion was driven further by being able to compare, for myself, a life spent in remedial labor and one with scientific exploration. Needing to work in my family's business for years out of necessity placed me in a position where I saw how each action could either draw me from or towards a better lifestyle. These experiences have personally shown me the value in a program like the Leadership Alliance, whose purpose offers a means to be a part of a diverse cohort striving toward leadership in the world. Having the opportunity to be included in a community with such a goal and momentum would be phenomenal. It would allow me to continue pursuing graduate and post–graduate level education while also refining me into a monumental force in the field of scientific research. I desire to pursue my passion of photosynthesis, plants, and biochemistry to serve the world with a team of researchers. An academic appreciation and respect of science ... Aspirin is one of the first drugs in the world that came to a common use with about 35,000 metric tons that are annually used and consumed by people all over the world. Aspirin is commonly used to relieve people from pain of headaches and reduces the temperatures of fevers. Aspirin is also used to sooth a scratchy throat, relieving pain from bug–bites, wiping away rust marks, and clearing dandruff problems. Most of these problems consist of aspirin to dissolve in water to create a solution. Facts & Chemical Compositions of Aspirin Aspirin was a chemical substance that was created in 1899, by a scientist who worked in the Bayer company of Germany. But before the actual "Aspirin" that we have now was created; thousands of years ago, doctors of Native American tribes, actual Indians, Ancient Greeks, and even Ancient Egyptians used the bark and leaves from willow trees to relieve aches and pains. Later on 3 scientist, Brungnatelli, Fontana, and Johann Buchner, discovered that the Willow tree contained salicin, a naturally occurring flammatory substance. Then a key composition was added to the list of ingredients over a 100 years ago when something called acetylsalicylic acid, was founded. In the 1970 's researchers learned that a chemical substance named prostaglandins, was found in Aspirin, this substance is connected to the pain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. My First Day Of School I remember the day so vividly, like it was yesterday. My family and I lived in a small, two story house, in the middle of town. I woke up that morning, for my very first day of school. I got out of bed and walked past my little brothers room, then past my parents and to the bathroom. I showered, brushed my and then my teeth. I walked back to my room and got ready for my first day of school. I had just turned three and my mom wanted to put me in preschool right away. I walked down the spiral staircase, ( my favorite part of the house). When I got down stairs my mom was making breakfast. My little sisters and brother awake, with my mom down stairs waiting for me. My younger brother and sister were waiting at the table for me. My mom set down my other little sister in her playpen. She then came to the kitchen, and gave me and my little sister and brother are breakfast. My mom asked me if I was ready for my first day of school and I said yes. I was so excited for that day. My siblings and I ate are breakfast, then we went outside to wait for the bus to pick me up. It was a quite chilly day. The wind was blowing that day. And the old weeping willow tree was swaying in the wind. The back yard had a wooden fence around it. And the front had a wire fence around it. The bus finally came to get me. As I walked to get on the bus my sister and brother waved goodbye. My best friend and I walked to the buys together. The bus was a little one, only about five seats. It was yellow and had stickers all over it, very colorful. When my friend and I got on the bus, we sat next to each other. The bus stopped at a couple more stops. Finally after being on the bus for what felt like a decade, we were at the school. My friend and I walked into school together, very excited. There was a little P.E. room and a hallway full of doors. The walls were covered in paintings and drawings. My friend and I walked into the classroom. We were greeted with open arms. The teachers showed us around. Then we went and put are things away. The English countryside represents the ideal location for a pastoral work. One such work is the Edwardian children's story, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Since its publication in 1908, the story has become a beloved children's classic. However, the story represents Edwardian society in England, and uses anthropomorphized animals to represent Edwardian men. As a pastoral work, the events of the story occur in the English countryside, where the animals work together to care for the wild one in their group, Mr. Toad. The author used the background of a pastoral vision to help elucidate the characteristics of Edwardian society. Mr. Toad is one of the most known characters from the work. He is extremely wealthy and essentially bored with his life. His English country life does not offer him fulfillment. As such, he jumps from interest to interest, quickly grabbing at new hobbies. As a wealthy landed scion, he has the luxury of this lifestyle. From the earliest mentions of his home, Toad Hall, it becomes apparent that he represents the landed gentry. Rat points out his home from the river. "The stables are over there to the right. That's the banqueting–hall you're looking at now–very old, that is. Toad is rather rich, you know" (Grahame 19). Toad quickly changes his interests, spending the money his father left him. Rat describes this character flaw of Toad: "'Boating is out. He's tired of it, and done with it. I wonder what new fad he has taken up now?'" (Grahame 21). Toad quickly takes up motoring as his new hobby. Motoring referred to the hobby of driving and racing cars, something only the wealthy could afford at this time. All of this is discussed as the characters take a slow ride down the river and then sit quietly in the countryside. An outdoor luncheon helps to create the image of the setting. The English countryside represents the perfect pastoral setting, and the characters all seem to enjoy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Descriptive Essay You awaken to the sound of waves upon a shore, and with your mouth full of sand. Coughing, you blink a few times to adjust your eyes to your bright, new surroundings. You see a sparkling beach edging a gentle, clear sea, and farther in, a thick forest. Glancing down the shore, the sand continues endlessly in a way that makes it hard to tell whether this is an island or the mainland. There is no boat in sight, and so you decide to head into the forest to find some sort of civilization. As soon as you step under the canopy of the trees, the temperature seems to drop by about ten degrees. You walk farther in with no clear direction in mind. Turning around, you find that you can no longer see the beach, and realize that maybe walking in without a plan was not such a good idea. At this point, you have completely lost your bearings. Still, it seems to you that it might be wise to leave some sort of markings to help you figure out from which direction you came. Now as you walk, you break the branches at eye level on your right hand side. After about an hour of wandering, you see a wider clearing up ahead, and hasten your speed toward it. At first it seems as though you have stepped into a forest glade so beautiful it could have come straight out of a fairytale. • 33. Character Analysis Of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The... The novel The Wind in the Willows portrayed numerous aspects of the author Kenneth Grahame's life within its contents. Some of these aspects included social, psychological, and other components of the author's life. Within his book parts of his life included were the people from his life. These people were Kenneth Grahame's father, his son Alastair, and his friend Sir Arthur Quiller–Couch. One of the people from his life who was transformed into a memorable character was his son Alastair. The Wind in the Willows was a novel based on bedtime stories about the character named Toad, the stories of which were told to Alastair in effort to soothe him to sleep. When Kenneth took the stories and adapted them into a novel, he used qualities from his son and used them in the character Mole. Mole could easily be described as a mild mannered, as well as home loving animal. He was the first character to be introduced in the story. Within the first chapter of the novel Mole ventured outside of his underground home. Soon after coming outside Mole realized the fast moving pace of life around the riverbank. Although cautious at first, Mole soon adapted with help from his new found friends. Since birth Alastair had complications that made life increasingly more difficult as he grew up. One of the largest complications that was faced by Alastair was that he was blinded in one eye since birth. While also faced with other disabilities, Alastair's problem was the blindness he retained. Similar to how Mole adapted to his surroundings by the riverbank, Alastair adapted to life with disabilities while keeping a mild mannered attitude. In addition to the adaptation, Alastair accepted help from many people like his father and mother like Mole accepted help from his friends. Mole went through complications as well throughout the chapters within the novel. One of these complications is how when Mole became impatient to meet Badger and went off on his own to find him, leading to him becoming lost in the woods until his friend Rat finds him. A complication similar to what Mole went through was how Alastair got ejected from many different schools until finally a school called Christ Church accepted him. • 35. Analysis Of The Centauur By May Swenson Imagination is used to back away from reality and enter a new world. Most children use their imagination for this reason, they turn into animals to lose control of themselves and become someone else. The girl in the poem,"The Centaur," by May Swenson, the imaginary horse was used to both replace her brother and remember him. She uses her imagination to reminisce and cope with her loss. The gendered pronouns were used to refer to her brother along with metaphor and zoomorphism that helped contribute to the overall theme and idea of the poem. In the flashback when the girl was ten, she referred to her brother's possessions constantly. Although her brother has seemed to be passed away, in her imagination he is actually there. "I'd go on my two bare feet. But when, with my brother's jack–knife, I had cut me a long limber horse." In the girl's imagination, she uses her brother's knife to cut her a long limber horse; however, with the use of vehicle, it shows that in reality the girl is cutting a branch off the willow tree. Her brother is one of the memories from her past, and by imagining, she remembers him. "Except a few leaves for the tail, and cinched my brother's belt around his head for a rein" the male horse replaces the brother and by constantly using her brother's possessions, she is able to cope with her the loss of her brother and remember him again. In the "Centaur" by May Swenson, the author uses zoomorphism to give animal qualities to human things, and throughout the poem tenor and vehicle were used. Tenor is used when something is actually present and vehicle is used when something is not present. In the poem, the girl blurs her identity with the horse's, "that talcumed over his hoofs, hiding my toes, and turning his feet to swift half moons." The girl believes that she is transforming into a horse or in reality, becoming her brother. With the use of zoomorphism, the author is able to show that the horse reminds her of her brother, causing her to follow in her brother's footsteps because she misses him. "My head and neck were mine, yet they were shaped like a horse." The girl believes she is transforming into a horse, and with her imagination she is able to manage with this idea because it is a ... • 36. Descriptive Essay On The Beauty Of A House She paced the border of her property, three times she has gone around, I had been counting. I am curious to know how many more revolutions she will make in the next hour. She has yet to notice my presence under a thick layer of underbrush underneath a willow tree, strangled in buckthorn. The medieval looking weed crawls all the way up the trunk, suffocating each of its branches. Similar to how my foster mother has been treating me. Here, I hide out, escaping her grasps as long as I can. The women is now out of sight now as she paces behind her house back by the small pond. The reflection of the setting sun bounces of the water, a blinding array of colors. Yellow. Orange. Pink. It will be dark soon, and my foster mother will commence her journey to find me. The house is made of deep Burgundy brick and the shingles look a if they could fall off at any moment. Vines that hug her house seem to be sucking all the cleanliness out of the pond, as it is a musty brown color. Another willow tree covers half of the lake and blocks the right side of the house from the sun. A broken wooden ladder leans against the left side of the house, engulfed by vines. Wind howls through the strange statues scattered across her yard and shivers creep up my spine. Some of my unease is soothed when I observe the beautiful garden that borders the house. The flowers are bright and lively, contrasting the appearance of the house and the pond. At this time, the lady approaches an elm tree on the left side of her house and looks straight up and mutters aloud, as if in conversation with a fellow human being. Odd. She seems offput as she looks around before continuing her pacing. Only this time, instead of continuing her circle, she walks straight towards me. My heart races and I duck further into the underbrush. At once, she leaps forward, directly in front of me and her eyes pierce through mine. I envision myself scrambling away, my heart is pounding, yet I am frozen, locked in her gaze. My heart has made its way up my throat as she comes closer. Anya is upset with Xander for never asking about how she feels, and tells him "we never talk." The scenes foreshadow all the characters taking their voices for granted, and becoming overwhelmed when they are misinterpreted. When The Gentlemen steal their voices, it causes them to not be able to talk to each other, making them realize how important communication really is. In "'Tough Enough': Female Friendship and Heroism," Sharon Ross focuses on the importance of a new vision of heroism, by discussing epistemic negotiation.
