Gary Russi was president of Oakland University for two decades where he oversaw major growth in students and academics, including the opening of the William Beaumont School of Medicine, Michigan's first new medical school in over 40 years. Students at the William Beaumont School of Medicine often work with Beaumont Health System through clinical and research opportunities like Rachel Hunt, who observed the effects of radiation therapy on Alzheimer's disease patients with a research team. The study suggested radiation therapy significantly decreased beta amyloid levels in the brain, which is linked to Alzheimer's.

Epidemiological studies investigate the distribution and causes of diseases in populations. They use either prospective or retrospective approaches. Prospective studies, known as cohort studies, follow individuals exposed or unexposed to potential risk factors over time to compare disease outcomes. Retrospective studies, known as case-control studies, compare exposures in individuals who have the disease (cases) to those who don't (controls) to identify potential causes. Cohort studies observe disease occurrence in relation to presumed causes, while case-control studies investigate causes after disease occurrence.

Oakland University's satellite campus in Macomb County exceeded enrollment of 2,000 students since its establishment, providing university access to the previously unserved largest county nationwide.

Long-Term Outcome in Adults with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
This study examined the long-term outcomes of 83 adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who were originally enrolled in placebo-controlled trials of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) for OCD treatment between 10-20 years prior. The study found that only 20% of subjects had experienced remission of their OCD symptoms, while 49% still had clinically significant OCD symptoms. Initial response to SRI pharmacotherapy strongly predicted long-term outcome, with those who initially responded to SRIs more likely to experience remission over the long term. The study did not find an association between long-term outcome and OCD symptom dimensions.

ADHD medication and substance related problems
This study used a large U.S. health claims database to examine the association between ADHD medication treatment and substance-related problems. The results showed that: 1) ADHD patients were more likely to experience substance issues than controls, but medication reduced this risk; 2) Patients had lower odds of substance problems during months taking medication; and 3) Male patients on long-term medication had lower substance risk, though benefits were less clear for females. The study provides evidence that ADHD medication does not increase, and may decrease, risks of substance problems.

William Beaumont Medical Students Participate in Innovative Research

The capstone program provides opportunities for med students to work on projects with faculty mentors. Rachel Hunt, an MD candidate, recently worked alongside Beaumont researchers, observing the effects of radiation therapy on Alzheimer’s disease.

During the study, Ms. Hunt assisted researchers in assessing results through the analysis of cellular markers. She looked for the buildup of beta amyloid, which is linked to Alzheimer’s. The study suggested that radiation significantly decreased beta amyloid levels in the brain.
