3. What is Li- Fi ?
• Li- Fi is the transmission of data through illumination by
taking the fiber out of fiber optics by sending data through
a LED light bulb.
• It is the fast and cheap wireless communication system
which is optical version of the WI- FI.
• The term Li-Fi was coined by University of Edinburgh
Professor Herald Haas in 2011
4. How does it work?
• Li-Fi and Wi-Fi are quite similar as both transmit data
electromagnetically. However, Wi-Fi uses radio waves
while Li-Fi runs on visible light.
• A controller connected at the back side of these LEDs is
used to code data.
• It accommodates a photo-detector to receive light signals
and a signal processing element to convert the data into
'stream-able' content.
5. Continue (video 1)
• All the data from
internet is streamed
into lamp driver.
• Data from internet is
used to modulate the
intensity of LED light
source.
• The photodetector
picks up the signal
• The receiver dongle
then converts the data
into electronic form

6. LI-FI VS. WI-FI
Parameters Li-Fi Light fidelity Wi-Fi Power fidelity
Data transfer Speed 1Gbps 150Mbps
Security Its high secure Its medium secure
Cost High cost in installation Less cost
Power consumption Low Medium
Operation
LiFi transmits data using light
with the help of LED bulbs.
Wi-Fi transmits data using
radio waves with the help of
Wi-Fi router.
Privacy In LiFi, light is blocked by
the walls and hence will
provide more secure data
transfer
In Wi-Fi, RF signal can not
be blocked by the walls,
data can not be secure

Parameters Light fidelity ( Li-Fi ) Power fidelity (Wi-Fi)
Advantages Li-Fi works well in dense
regions and can transmit
through salt water. It has less
interference.
Wi-Fi does not work well in
dense regions; it cannot pass
through water and interference
is more
Range About 10 meters About 32 meters

8. TRAFFIC SCENARIO
In traffic scenario, LI-FI can be
used to communicate with the
LED light of cars.
Cars can have LED based
headlights, backlights and can
communicate with each other.
This might prevent accidents, by
exchanging information, when
the vehicles are too close.
Figure: 2
9. AIRCRAFTS
The whole airways
communication are performed on
the basis of radio frequency.
Hence passengers face the
problem in communication
media.
This problem can be overcome
by using LI-FI, since light waves
will not interfere with radio
frequency.
Figure: 3
10. FEATURES OF LI-FI
• It is about 100 times faster than some Wi-Fi systems.
• Speeds up to 224 gigabits per second.
• Uses LED as source.
• LED can be dimmed to below human visibility.
• Hence more secure from hacking.
11. Advantages
Fast data transfer
Hence there is no health concerns in li-fi based system.
High security
Easy to use
Low cost
It can work under water.
It can work in the aircraft.
Figure 4
12. Disadvantages
The light waves cannot penetrate walls.
Internet can be used only where source of light device is
available.
It can not be used in outdoor environment like RF signal.
li-fi system requires whole new infrastructure. This will
add cost to the companies/people wanting to take li-fi
internet service.
We can not watch games and videos on internet in the dark
during night.
13. HOW CAN WE IMPLEMENT LI-FI IN
PAKISTAN?
• LI-Fi is new technology that
needs all new infrastructures
and that is costly first; we will
target the commercial areas,
government sectors and
education sectors.
• Because the LI-Fi is a new
technology, which is needs
more cost.

14. Conclusion
The possibilities are
numerous and can be
explored further.
If this technology can
be put into practical
use, every bulb can be
used something like a
Li-Fi hotspot.
This may solve issues
such as the shortage of
radio frequency
bandwidth.
Allows internet where
traditional radio based
wireless isn't allowed
such as aircraft or
hospitals.
