Mother & Child Nutrition in the First 1000 Days
  
This session will cover the role of nutrition for maternal
health, fetal development, and infant growth in early
life. Specifically, we will discuss maternal nutrition from
conception through lactation. This will be followed by
a close look at how energy and nutrient imbalances
during pregnancy can alter genetic outcomes,
increasing the life-long risk for chronic disease in the
growing child, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease,
hypertension, and stroke. We will present key points to
cover during counseling to ensure that the introduction
of complementary foods and the acquisition of the
child’s first dietary pattern over the course of the first
2 years is optimal. We also will touch on infant feeding
problems that parents and care-givers report and the
changes to the diet that the clinicians may order to
counter them.

it is in our communities. There will be discussion

information on the perceptions of women in

102 Why the Community is Key to Hospital Success:
310 Connect 
In order to fully experience evidence-based
maternity care practices in the hospital mothers
must be prepared, through culturally sensitive
education and encouragement. In order to reach
their breastfeeding goals, mothers must not only
be supported in the hospital but also must have
access to consistent community support after
discharge. These concepts, outlined in the Baby-
Friendly Steps 3 and 10, reinforce the importance
of a close collaborative relationship between
the hospital and the WIC agency. In this session,
attendees will experience one urban hospital’s
successful journey to Baby-Friendly through the
lens of Steps 3 and 10. Attendees will come away
with concrete steps that they can use to facilitate
a two-way relationship with the hospital. Steps
will range in complexity from “ Quick Wins”—
things that can be accomplished immediately—to
“Mountain Projects” – bigger projects that will take
time and patience but that will pay off in the end.
Dr. Paula Schrek
103 Identifying the Infant At-Risk for Growth Failure
  
In this session we will look at the definitions,
guidelines, and strategies to address growth
faltering and growth failure. We will review the
consequences of early growth failure on future
health, including issues with linear growth and
body composition. The session will also provide a
lot at the child at-risk, prior to being diagnosed as
failure-to-grow, and what we now know about the
consequences. The subtle life-long deficits due to
poor diet quality on the rapidly developing brain
will be reviewed. During this session, clinicians
will be shown how to identify those at-risk for
problems from within the large group of “picky
eaters”. Discussion on interventions will be offered.

402 Life in Balance: Improving the Quality of Your
Journey  
Virtually every health care worker knows the
feeling – too much to do and too little time
or energy to do it all well. This session will
target “compassion fatigue”. This informative,
entertaining, and inspiring session will address
the universal quest of contemporary life-finding
a balance. The timeless, practical life-strategies,
gleaned from Dr. Mom’s personal journey and
professional encounters, will equip the participant
with tools to increase personal fulfillment,
enhance productivity, prevent burnout, align
priorities, promote resilience, and practice self-
care. Discover how reordering our own harried
lives can better equip us to sensitively counsel
and support breastfeeding clients at risk for
increased levels of stress that contribute to early
weaning. Come prepared to laugh and learn –
leave rejuvenated and re-energized about your
life and your work!
Dr. Marianne Neifert
403 You Might Be Better Than You Think: How
To Get Objective Feedback on Your Ability to
Communicate to Motivate   
Build your confidence and improve your client
centered interviewing skills by giving and
receiving feedback. This highly interactive
session is intended for individuals who have
had prior training in Client Centered Services or
Motivational Interviewing. Participants should
have experience attempting to use Motivational
Interviewing Techniques. Attending this session
with a coworker from your agency is ideal, but not
mandatory.

404 How to Understand & Use The Nutrition Fact
Label   
This presentation will explore the differences
between the old nutrition fact label and the
new label and how these changes will affect the
consumer.

405 How to Increase Redemptions by Marketing WIC
Food Packages Using Current Food Trends 
What do I do with all this cereal? I can't eat
that much peanut butter! Wait..did you say
plain yogurt? Sound familiar? In this interactive
session, nutrition marketing experts will help you
create innovative ways to improve redemption and
consumption rates using current food trends.

Intelligence of Fun! Creating Well-Being at Work
  
It is a proven fact that a "culture of fun" increases
motivation, employee engagement and productivity,
while going a long way to address compassion fatigue.
This session is guaranteed to leave participants
laughing while teaching them how to nurture their well-
being in the midst of occupational intensity, instilling
a culture of fun and creativity to strengthen morale,
purpose and shifts perspectives. Positive well-being
benefits the team and those they serve, bringing
lightness to the inherent challenges of the work setting.
Get ready to laugh while learning about The Intelligence
of Fun.

Specifically, we will discuss maternal nutrition from conception through lactation. This will be followed by a close look at how energy and nutrient imbalances during pregnancy can alter genetic outcomes, increasing the life-long risk for chronic disease in the growing child, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. We will present key points to cover during counseling to ensure that the introduction of complementary foods and the acquisition of the child’s first dietary pattern over the course of the first 2 years is optimal. We also will touch on infant feeding problems that parents and care-givers report and the changes to the diet that the clinicians may order to counter them. In this session, attendees will experience one urban hospital’s successful journey to Baby-Friendly through the lens of Steps 3 and 10. Attendees will come away with concrete steps that they can use to facilitate a two-way relationship with the hospital. Steps will range in complexity from “ Quick Wins”— things that can be accomplished immediately—to “Mountain Projects” – bigger projects that will take time and patience but that will pay off in the end.
