Traineeships are education and training programs with work experience that aim to give young people skills and experience that employers need to make them job ready. They involve work preparation training, English and maths lessons if needed, and a high-quality work placement of 6 weeks to 5 months. Employers benefit from shaping local skills, developing loyal employees, and potentially receiving an apprenticeship grant. The only costs employers have are providing the work placement and possibly expenses; all other training costs are covered. Employers can work with training providers to design flexible traineeships that meet business and individual needs.

the original content of the 1973 TPS manual1 was written by
the staff2 of Toyota Motor Corp. (OMCD - Operations Management Consulting Division.
By 1970, Toyota had a fairly stable production system internally and they made a decision to
assist suppliers by sharing their knowledge and skills. To do this, Toyota created a special
internal improvement group called Production Research Division (later renamed Operations
Management Consulting Division – OMCD)
his 1973 manual was also used as course materials by Ohno and his team – the Japanese
Management Association compiled their workshop materials and released it as a book in the
1978. Productivity Press translated it and released it as Kanban: Just-in-time at Toyota in
1986. While much of the Productivity Press book consists of the same materials as the 1973
TPS Manual, it is not presented in the same order.

2. This slideshow explains why you,
as an employer should considering
offering Traineeships to young
people & explains the benefits
of Traineeships for your business
Facts for the Employers
3. What is a Traineeship?
A Traineeship is an education & training
programme with work experience that is
focused on giving young people the skills
& experience that employers are looking
for and to make them ‘work ready’.
At its core are work preparation training,
English and Maths for those who need it,
& a high quality work experience
placement.
4. What is a Traineeship?
Traineeships can last up to six months and
include:
Work Preparation Training.
English & Maths* (*support if required.)
A work experience placement of six weeks
to five months with an employer.
In addition to these basic elements, you, as the
employer can add flexible additional content
give you specific training tailored for that
business & the local labour market meaning
that your Trainee will gain specialist skills.
5. What are the benefits of
offering Traineeships?
Traineeships have been developed in response
to research showing that young people
frequently lack the knowledge & experience
employers expect.
Traineeships help to tackle this problem, while
benefiting businesses in the following ways:
6. What are the benefits of
offering Traineeships?
You can design a high quality Traineeship within your company in
partnership with us; one that suits both the needs of your business and
the needs of the Trainee.
You can get ahead of the competition by bringing enthusiastic young
people with their fresh ideas into your business before they get on to the
job ladder.
7. Traineeships will allow you to shape the skills and experience of young
people from your local community, helping your business to develop a
loyal & talented workforce.
Working with trainees will give established staff members the chance to
develop their skills in mentoring & coaching young people.
If you decide to offer a Trainee an Apprenticeship you could be eligible
for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1500*.
(*subject to terms & conditions).
What are the benefits of
offering Traineeships?
8. Your company will need to provide:
A high quality work experience placement for the trainee,
lasting anything from six weeks to a maximum of five months.
Work experience placements should be:
Substantial & meaningful, providing a real workplace
experience.
A structured opportunity for the young person, matched to their
areas of interest & aspiration, where they engage in purposeful
work related learning activities rather than observation.
Long enough to allow for the development and thorough
embedding of new skills & behaviours.
What will my business
need to provide?
9. Before taking on a Trainee,
employers should be able to:
Pre-agree content and objectives
between your company, us and
the Trainee.
Identify a mentor to support the
trainee & give them regular
constructive feedback
throughout the programme.
Before the
Traineeship Starts
10. Once the young person has finished their Traineeship with your
company, you will need to give them:
Ideally, an interview for a position within your business if one is
available.
If no Apprenticeship or job opportunity exists within your business at
the end of the Traineeship, provide a meaningful exit interview
together with a reference to help them secure an Apprenticeship or
other employment with another employer.
The End of the
Traineeship
11. No, Traineeships are very flexible,
& by working closely with us you can
design a programme which suits your
needs and those of the Trainee.
We will assess the needs of the Trainee.
Depending on the individual they will start
the pre-employment elements including
local business & sector information.
Is it a rigid training
programme?
12. The work experience placement is core to the Traineeship,
however it doesn’t have to start on day one of a learner’s
Traineeship, but at the most appropriate time.
Jointly with you, we will plan when the Trainee should start,
the days they come in for work experience & how the
programme is delivered.
The process can be changed & finessed during the
Traineeship so that both you & your trainee get the
best out of the process.
Is it a rigid training
programme?
13. All training costs are met by Government
funding.
Employers are not required to pay young
people taking part in Traineeships but
are encouraged to support trainees
with expenses such as transport & meals.
Are there any financial costs
to offering Traineeships?
14. Speak with our team by calling: 0121 707 0550
or e-mailing: info@pathwaygroup.co.uk
We will be able to support you throughout the process.
