Introduction “ Imagine a world with no technology. Where would we be? Look around you. Technology surrounds us where ever we are. A pencil is technology. Paper is technology. Decades ago if someone were to ask us to learn without either of those two things we would insist on their necessity. My name is Joshua Grover. I am a graduate student at MSUM in the field of Educational Leadership with the Emphasis in Technology. My goal in the next few moments is to provide insight to the necessity of integrating technology into education of the students in this district.”
(Slide 2) “ I will illustrate such need through four areas in which technology can positively impact student education. Technology in education: Enhances student achievement Enhances teaching towards multiple intelligences Improves student motivation Prepares students to function in society”
(Transition: “Let’s begin with how technology in education can enhance student achievement”) “ In an article written by educational professionals: Kathy Braber, Kimberly Fisher, and Howard Pitler, nine researched strategies proven to enhance student achievement were addressed (7).” Nine Strategies Ways of addressing the strategies Instructions :Now because so many pieces of technology can be used to satisfy multiple strategies I’ve chosen to list all of them together and let the audience link the use to the strategy. This would also be a good point to start some audience participation depending on the size of the group. Question for audience before listing ways: “What uses of technology do you think would be applicable to one or all of the strategies?” After some answers begin revealing them on the slide and see if there is any correlation.
(Transition: “Now we’ll explore how technology can appeal to multiple intelligences.”) “ The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University.Education today is highly focused on the philosophy or teaching towards each type of learner. This is a list of the types of learner Gardner describes and ways technology outlined at www.eduscapes.com that can help reinforce teaching practices for each:” (Give brief background on eduscape and its creators.) Annette Lamb and Larry Johnson, Professional Teachers, website is a resource for teachers. This slide can also be done in a question and answer style. Main question : “What are some technological ways that would appeal to each type of learner? ” Linguistic: “These "word smart" people learn best through language including speaking, writing, reading, and listening. They are able to verbally or in writing explain, convince, and express themselves. They enjoy writing and creating with words.” Bullet points Logical/Mathematical: “These "number smart" people learn best through numbers, reasoning, and problem solving. They are able to create and manipulate visuals and create mental pictures from many perspectives. They like to weigh, measure, calculate, and organize data.” Bullet points Visual/Spatial: “These "picture smart" people learn best visually and tend to organize their thinking spatially. They like to think and create pictures. They are also drawn to information that is presented in a visual form.” Bullet points Bodily/Kinesthetic: “These "body smart" people learn best through physical activity such as dance, hands-on tasks, constructing models, and any kind of movement. They are able to manipulate and control objects, as well as express their ideas through movement.” Bullet points Musical/Rhythmic: “These "music smart" people learn best through sounds including listening and making sounds such as songs, rhythms, patterns, and other types of auditory expression. Intrapersonal: “These "self smart" people learn best through metacognitive practices such as getting in touch with their feelings and self motivation. They are able to concentrate and be mindful.” Bullet points Interpersonal: “These "social smart" people learn best through interaction with other people through discussions, cooperative work, or social activities. They are able to create synergy in a room by being aware of the feelings and motives of others.” Bullet points Naturalist: “These "nature" people learn best through the interactions with the environment including outdoor activities, field trips, and involvement with plants and animals. They see the subtle meanings and patterns in nature and the world around them. (Transition: “Now let’s briefly look at how technology can improve student motivation.”) “ As educators, it is imperative that we constantly adjust our teaching strategies to motivate children. Not only can technology be used to appeal to the multiple intelligences it can also be used as an affective motivator. Integrating technology has many positive effects on both students and teachers. Some of those effects are that it: Enhances student achievement Enhances teaching towards multiple intelligences Improves student motivation Prepares students to function in society With the support of the teachers, the administrators, and the community, technology has the power to improve the education of every student. We are at a point where we all need to make a choice to embrace technology or fight it every step of the way. Together, it is my hope that we can make the right choice. Thank you.”
