This document discusses disaster recovery (DR) options for Oracle databases. It notes that while everyone talks about DR, few organizations actually implement it due to cost barriers. It presents five scenarios comparing the licensing and support costs of using Oracle Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition for primary and standby databases. The document concludes by introducing Dbvisit Standby as a more affordable third-party solution for creating a standby database with Standard Edition for disaster recovery purposes.
Deduplication reduces the amount of disk storage needed to retain and protect data by ratios of 10-30x and greater, making a disk a cost-effective alternative to tape. Data on disk is available online and onsite for longer retention periods, and restores become fast and reliable. Storing only unique data on disk also means that data can be cost-effectively replicated over existing networks to remote sites for disaster recovery and consolidated tape operations.

EMC Data Domain Retention Lock Software: Detailed ReviewEMC
This white paper explains how EMC Retention Lock software enables IT organizations to efficiently store and manage retention of archive data for both governance and compliance on a single Data Domain system.
Implementing Parallelism in PostgreSQL - PGCon 2014EDB
PostgreSQL's architecture is based heavily on the idea that each connection is served by a single backend process, but CPU core counts are rising much faster than CPU speeds, and large data sets can't be efficiently processed serially. Adding parallelism to PostgreSQL requires significant architectural changes to many areas of the system, including background workers, shared memory, memory allocation, locking, GUC, transactions, snapshots, and more.
In this session we want to explore the various ways you can setup a connection strategy. We'll start with Oracle's UCP (Universal Connection Pool), its architecture and most notably, how do you size it? We'll discuss important concepts such as: connection reservation, and the distinction between connection, process and session.
Besides UCP there are: Database Resident Connection Pool (DRCP) and Proxy Resident Connection Pool (PRCP). Which will both be discussed. We'll also look into combining different types of pools: what are their typical use-cases, and what are the pitfalls?
The Lenovo Storage S3200 array delivers best-in-class price/performance with a modular architecture facilitating simple performance upgrades and maintenance.
SANsymphony-V software, running between the hosts and the arrays, further accelerates applications by leveraging powerful processors and large memories of commodity x86-64 servers for read and write caching. Its auto-tiering software optimally utilizes the array’s SSDs to speed up active workloads, while migrating less-frequently accessed data to lower cost, higher capacity SAS disks. DataCore also converts host random write patterns known to suffer high disk latencies, into sequential IOs far more favorable for disks.

What is NetBackup appliance? Is it just NetBackup pre-installed on hardware?
The answer is both yes and no.
Yes, NetBackup appliance is simply backup in a box if you are looking for a solution for your data protection and disaster recovery readiness. That is the business problem you are solving with this turnkey appliance that installs in minutes and reduce your operational costs.
No, NetBackup appliance is more than a backup in box if you are comparing it with rolling your own hardware for NetBackup or if you are comparing it with third party deduplication appliances. Here is why I say this…
NetBackup appliance comes with redundant storage in RAID6 for storing your backups
Symantec worked with Intel to design the hardware for running NetBackup optimally for predictable and consistent performance. Eliminates the guesswork while designing the solution.
Many vendors will talk about various processes running on their devices to perform integrity checks, some solutions even need blackout windows to do those operations. NetBackup appliances include Storage Foundation at no additional cost. The storage is managed by Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and presented to operating system through Veritas File System. Why is this important? SF is industry-leading storage management infrastructure that powers the most mission-critical applications in the enterprise space. It is built for high-performance and resiliency. NetBackup appliance provides 24/7 protection with data integrity on storage provided by the industry leading technology.
The Linux based operating system, optimized for NetBackup, harden by Symantec eliminates the cost of deploying and maintaining general purpose operating system and associated IT applications.
NetBackup appliances include built-on WAN Optimization driver. Replicate to appliances on remote sites or to the cloud up to 10 times faster on across high latency links.
Your backups need to be protected. Symantec Critical System Protection provides non-signature based Host Intrusion Prevention protection. It protects against zero-day attacks using granular OS hardening policies along with application, user and device controls, all pre-defined for you in NetBackup appliance so that you don’t need to worry about configuring it.
Best of all, reduce your operational expenditure and eliminate complexity! One patch updates everything in this stack! The most holistic data protection solution with the least number of knobs to operate.
TECHNICAL WHITE PAPER: NetBackup Appliances WAN OptimizationSymantec
In a world of ever increasing data flow as well as globalization of data centers the effectiveness and utilization of the networks connecting sites is of the highest importance to end users. Even with network enhancement and improvement, the ability of the infrastructure to keep pace with the flow of data has proved not to be in lockstep. To optimize the flow of data verses increasing the pipe that is flows along is seen as critical to keeping operations running and costs minimal. This paper discusses the new WAN Optimization technology that has been introduced in the NetBackup 5220 and 5020 appliances.
This document outlines the WAN Optimization feature enhancements introduced on the NetBackup 5220 and NetBackup 5020 and applies to:
• NetBackup 5220 & 5230 appliances with version N2.5 and above installed
• NetBackup 5020 & 5030 appliances with version D1.4.2 and above installed

Why 2015 is the Year of Copy Data - What are the requirements?Storage Switzerland
Data is the new currency of business. To fully protect and exploit this data requires that it be copied to various backend processes like data protection, compliance and data analytics. The problem is that primary data is growing by 35 to 50% per year, the need to copy all this data can exacerbate this problem by 10X! Data centers have to find a way to mitigate this problem but still drive full value from backend processes.
In 2015 IT professionals will be hearing a lot about how copy data management will address this problem. But all copy data solutions are not created equal. Listen to experts from Storage Switzerland and Catalogic to define exactly what copy data is and what IT professionals should expect from these solutions.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
