The document discusses moving databases from 3 Oracle M9000 servers to a new Oracle SPARC SuperCluster (SSC) system. It describes the key phases of the project including lifting and shifting the databases from the M9000s to application domains on the SSC, making use of the SSC's integrated storage cells, upgrading databases from Oracle 9i and 10g to 11g, and consolidating databases. It also covers issues encountered such as performance problems after the initial migration and regressions encountered during patching cycles. The document provides details on configuring features on the SSC like RAC One Node, Data Guard, and database resource management.

Linux Kernel vs DPDK: HTTP Performance ShowdownScyllaDB
In this session I will use a simple HTTP benchmark to compare the performance of the Linux kernel networking stack with userspace networking powered by DPDK (kernel-bypass).
It is said that kernel-bypass technologies avoid the kernel because it is "slow", but in reality, a lot of the performance advantages that they bring just come from enforcing certain constraints.
As it turns out, many of these constraints can be enforced without bypassing the kernel. If the system is tuned just right, one can achieve performance that approaches kernel-bypass speeds, while still benefiting from the kernel's battle-tested compatibility, and rich ecosystem of tools.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.
Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standards. How can we improve this crucial process?
In this session we will cover:
- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools
By the end of this presentation, you'll have the knowledge on how to organize and improve your code review proces

24. Project Overview
EOL
phase 1
Lift & Shift
Move zones from M9000 to
APP domain on Super Cluster
phase 2
MAKE USE OF STORAGE CELLs
Parallel : Upgrade from 9i and 10g to 11g
34. Lift and Shift
From native Solaris 10 to “Branded” zones
Sun4v to Sun4u conversion
Attach ZONES target
LDOM Solaris 10
Detach zone
QFSDP OCTOBER 2013
36. Post Lift and Shift Issues (1)
Performance
Full TBS take much longer from <1m to > 3m
Sybase 15.7 not supported on Branded Zones
Sybase Dumps take much longer
37. Post Lift and Shift Issues (2)
Lot’s of Conf Calls further
Slow segments in Data Dictionary
ZFS tuning : prefetch off
DISM not supported in 11.2 on SSC Doc ID 1468297.1
Multipathing to Logical Block <=> RR
Increased buffer cache
Increase priority of LGWR to FX-60
Dedicated resource pools on Sol
38. Performance Call Lessons
Learned
Route ticket to right team
Escalate !!!
Confs call help
Support focusing on AWR it helps to put retention > 1 w
Re read recommendations and interact with support
39. Summary post L&S actions
ZFS tuning
OS Tuning
Upgrade from 11203 to 11204 PSU 2
40.
41. phase 2
RAC One node
Data Guard
ASM
Services
DB resource manager
Consolidation
IORM
Instance caging
Data Guard Broker
EM 12c
SCAN
VIP Clusterware
RAT Solaris 11.1
42. Initial “temporary” configuration done by ACS
in 2013
RAC One install
Some stuff missing :
grid slicing dicing
zones
cell config X4 cells added
QFSDP january
node listener running on admin nw
43. potential issues
About 300 db’s
Some with data dictionary bigger then data
RAC One in conjunction with >50 db’s
with just 16 cores
Oracle Client version …. SCAN
45. issues encountered
Upgrade from QFSDP OCT 2013 to QFSDP Jan 2014
10.2 db and 11.1 db fail to start
work around ipcrm …
IDR delivered
QFSDP APR 2014 again regression
IDR delivered
47. Rac One
Controlled Active Passive solution
Always one instance active
Except during relocate this to allow failover
Differences with Regular RAC
No 1 to 1 mapping node - instance nr
48. Rac One Relocate
srvctl relocate database -d SWINGUAT_SSC01 -n ssc01dbdat04z01 -v
Configuration updated to two instances
Instance SWINGUAT_2 started
Services relocated
Waiting for up to 30 minutes for instance SWINGUAT_1 to stop ...
Instance SWINGUAT_1 stopped
Configuration updated to one instance
Instance naming different
Rac => instance_name1
Rac One => instance_name_1
49. Rac One Binding
srvctl status database -d DGTEST_SSC02
Instance DGTEST_1 is running on node ssc02node02z01
Online relocation: INACTIVE
srvctl relocate database -d DGTEST_SSC02 -n ssc02node01z01 -v
Configuration updated to two instances
Instance DGTEST_2 started
Services relocated
Waiting for up to 10 minutes for instance DGTEST_1 to stop ...
Instance DGTEST_1 stopped
Configuration updated to one instance
srvctl status database -d DGTEST_SSC02
Instance DGTEST_2 is running on node ssc02node01z01
Online relocation: INACTIVE
srvctl stop database -d DGTEST_SSC02
srvctl start database -d DGTEST_SSC02 -n ssc02node02z01
srvctl status database -d DGTEST_SSC02
Instance DGTEST_2 is running on node ssc02node02z01
Online relocation: INACTIVE
50. Rac One + Dg
separate logically dg redo traffic from regular
use data guard broker
broker requires a static listener entry
Data Guard Physical Standby 11.2 RAC Primary to RAC Standby using a second network
(Doc ID 1349977.1)
How to setup LOCAL_LISTENER for RAC One Node Database (Doc ID 1497619.1)

create an extra network vips etc…
create a listener

64. Compose a dedicated project team
Solaris on SSC is Solaris but with minor differences
Have a pilot
Make use of your platinum support, route to correct team
Follow QFSDP patches but not too closely ;-)
65.
66. Thank you
