Who is your audience for your
media product?
CERTIFICATION
By rating our film a 15 it ensures that nobody under the age of
fifteen years old is able to view, buy or rent the film. This enables
us to express 'strong threat’ and 'horror' more directly.
The requirements of a 15 rated film according to the
BBFC.
We chose to venture towards a certificate of 15
instead of a 12A or an 18.
This was due to the limitations we had if we had chosen a12A, despite the
requirements being relatively similar just a smaller scale, we felt as though we
would be limited in the content we would be able to show, as you are restricted
from using a sustained disturbing tone overall throughout the film.
Likewise, the we felt that our film was not as ‘hardcore’ enough to attain a
certificate of an 18, plus we would be heavily limiting our audiences by restricted
the ages of 15-17 from watching it- which also seem to be the most popular
ages for the horror genre.
RESEARCH
So earlier on in the year I carried out a research task in
order to get a feel for what genres were the most popular
in terms of age and gender.
These were the results I got back...
Based on my research, I would say our main target audience would be
the ages of 15 to around 25.
I found audiences’ of these ages would most likely still achieve that
‘adrenaline rush’ whilst watching, instead of just being cold-blooded with
fear that most of the mature audiences would feel which would initially
‘put them off’ the genre as a whole.
As well as this we found that the majority of males in my questionnaire
preferred the horror genre whereas only one female stated it was her
favorite genre leaving four to say it was their least favorite, however two
males did state that horror was their least favorite.
To conclude I believe our film would be targeted at both genders, due to
the lack of blood and gore it would attract females as many stated that
‘too much blood’ was the reason they would usually steer away, despite
our research showing that horror is more favored with males, it also
showed that one woman classified the genre as her favorite indicating
that there are females who enjoy horrors, as well as males who dislike
them delineated by the two males who voted for it as their least favorite.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Many of our film inspirations obtain a certificate of 15 for example 'Annabelle' and 'The Woman in Black'
