The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in...
The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in Valediction: for Weeping
In John Donne s A Valediction: for Weeping, the speaker consoles his lover before leaving on a sea
voyage and begs her not to cry. Crying, the speaker tells his lover this poem at the docks before he
boards his ship going abroad. Donne uses a spherical image as the central metaphor in his poem.
When Donne uses irony, paradox, and hyperbole including the use of round images such as: coins,
globes, and tears he strengthens the spherical conceit. By comparing two seeming opposites like
tears and love as his conceit, Donne uses the spherical image as the central paradox in A
Valediction: Of Weeping.
Donne opens the poem with the speaker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fruit and the emblem are round images describing their tears, the emblem symbolizes both
the literal round image and the lover s face (the tear bears her emblem or face). As the tear
bearing her image falls, the speaker fears the ending of their love if she cries, as the speaker
states: So thou and I are nothing then, when on a diverse shore (9). In the second stanza, the
speaker tries to convince her that they are still together, even when they are separated, and begs her
not to weep.
The second stanza opens with a ball image forming out of nothing into a globe. A worker can
take a round ball . . .and quickly make that, which was nothing, all (12). The globe and their love
represent all, because the globe represents all of the entire world, where as, the love
encompasses all of their individual worlds or spheres. They, the lovers, have their own worlds, and
like in The Good Morrow their two worlds become one, where the power of love binds the two
hemispheres (in The Good Morrow ) or globes (in A Valediction:

In Defense Of Distraction By Sam Anderson
Although the title of the essay is In Defense of Distraction, Sam Anderson is attacking the culture
of distraction. We are living in a culture where everyone is glued to technology and wants
everything to come in a single instant. He mentions that humanity suffers from a serious poverty, a
dearth of focus and attention. Distractions consume us, devouring our concentration, alleviating our
boredom, and constantly pestering us. We cannot help the fact that we are so easily distracted;
everywhere we go there, are bright neon advertisements, constant phone buzzes, and loud car horns
blaring. We all will succumb to these inevitable distractions of society, Anderson states We are, in
short, terminally distracted (Anderson 2). In Defense of Distraction

Summary Of Tuesdays With Morrie
Aphorism Narrative
Aphorisms are statements of observations that express an opinion or remarks of wisdom.
Tuesdays With Morrie is a book about a man who s dying from ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain
and the spinal cord. ( What Is ALS? ) Morrie uses aphorisms quite frequently to accept his future
and make peace with the past. The two aphorisms I chose are about making your life as fulfilling as
possible. Not only can they relate to me personally in small ways, but also in bigger and deeper
ways.
In Tuesday s with Morrie, Morrie had many aphorisms that not only helped himself but helped
others. He inspired many others, like his student Mitch, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I can t completely forget about these relationships because they can help me grow and become a
better person. I can t deny my faults in those relationships or blame the ending of the relationship
on the other person or else I ll repeat my mistakes in other relationships. I also can t forget the
positive aspects of the relationship and the happy moments without risking living a life of misery
and hate.
Morrie is well known for his aphorisms but he s not the only one who comes up with these words
of truth. An aphorism not of Morrie s but of similar depth and effect comes from the poet, George
Gordon Byron. He said, It is very certain that the desire of life prolongs it. (Aphorisms:Life) Lord
Byron lived from 1788 to 1824 and was a big contribution to the Romanticism era (Lord Byron
Biography). Romanticism was an era of creation made of feelings and expression and new deep
thought (Romanticism). This aphorism is definitely a reflection of the era. (Romanticism)
I believe that this aphorism means that being excited and enthusiastic about living and wanting
to live will make your life longer. If you re always dreading or fearing life, it will appear shorter
and less satisfying to you. For me personally, one of my biggest fears is death. Reading Tuesdays
with Morrie made me amazed and almost jealous of Morrie s outlook on death. I always fear I ll
never live a long, fulfilled life. This aphorism by Lord Byron has helped me realize that if I never do

Drunk Driving Laws Essay
Enforcing Drunk Driving Laws
In the United States, driving under the influence of alcohol is a major problem as it accounts for a
high number of road fatalities. It is a criminal offense for a person to drive under the influence of
alcohol in almost all countries in the world. Nations impose penalties for drunk driving; however,
they vary widely from states to states. Nevertheless, many countries seem to come to an agreement
that drunk driving claims many lives in a year, which is intolerable. For instance, in 2008 alone, in
the US, more than 11000 lives perished in the road carnage due to drivers driving under the
influence of alcohol (Grant 16). Therefore, the government should employ or enforce stricter laws
towards driving under the influence, to reduce road fatalities.
Most of the drivers are well conversant with the laws and consequences against driving under the
influence of alcohol. However, ignorance and negligence have been a thing in their DNA, as the
laws on driving under the influence are lenient and loose. Nevertheless, the victims families and
friends lives get ruined due to the sudden death of their beloved one who could be their bread
winners, and they cannot reclaim their lives back. Apparently, the offenders in prisons reclaim
their lives back after a few days, or they get out with fines or cash bail, which leaves the casualties
with constant pains and struggles. Also, the deceased families are left financially disadvantaged due
to high medical bills

Consider The Lobster By David Foster Wallace Summary
Consider the Lobster2 In the essay, Consider the Lobster, by David Foster Wallace, a point about
morality with regards to animal abuse is brought up. Much like minorities in America, lobsters are
considered to be the lowest tier of the animal society. The main point about the essay is to alert
people about the issues of torturing animals just for the sake of our humanistic pleasure. What is
socially acceptable as normal behavior is not always the most ethical or moral behavior. At the
beginning of the essay the author describes an annual tradition in Maine, the LobsterFestival. The
festival is self explanatory in that people from all over the area gather to indulge in immense
amounts of lobsters. While this part of the festival is

Outsourcing Research Paper
Throughout my paper, my point is to portray the effect of the outsourcing of American occupations
abroad. There are two strong arguments with outsourcing: one that accepts the handiness and
profits of the outsourcing and the other that energetically restricts outsourcing and focus on its
negatives. Government organizations accept that outsourcingmay decrease the expense of the
assembling of items and give administrations less expensive cost, and others feel that outsourcing
has triggered huge layoffs and loss of jobs. America needs to cease outsourcing due to the negative
effects it has on our country. Outsourcing takes occupations away from Americans, causes
considerably more economic issues, and can lessen the quality of materials.... Show more content on

The driving components for outsourcing are clear: lesser expenses all the way around. A machine
software engineer in India makes $5,880 to $11,000, while an American machine software engineer
wins in the middle of $60,000 and $80,000. American organizations stand to spare measures of cash
by outsourcing. Today, gauges of employment misfortune in the United Statespropose that in the
last ten years, between 400,000 to 500,000 data engineering preparing jobs have been outsourced.
While this speaks to a moderately little parcel of the United States work power of around 130
million laborers (Tyson), concerns over the loss of profoundly talented employees and expectations
that the outsourcing pattern will keep on growing have made outsourcing an imperative and
questionable subject. Unfortunately, the wave of outsourcing is going to continue in the United
States, and it is only going to get worse. A UC Berkeley s Haas School of Business study noted
that near 11 percent of all occupations in the United States are helpless to outsourcing. Further,
gauges demonstrate that outsourcing is going to be an ongoing Phenom, as Forrester Research
evaluates that by 2015, the United States will lose 3.3 million jobs to outsourcing. Different
assessments are higher, as Researchers Ashok Deo Bardhan and

Swot Analysis Of Jcpenney
Company Profile
JC Penney is an American department store chain with 1,095 locations throughout the United
States. In the latter half of the 20th century, shopping malls became very popular and most of the
company s stores were situated in the downtown areas, they followed the trend of developing more
stores in the shopping malls to attract customers and increase the financial profitability of the
company. Conversely, JC Penney had freestanding stores, and was able to get consumer traffic
which helped the company earn a profit and increase its market share.
From its inception in 1902, the company grew enormously, it added different businesses, made
them successful, and sold them to focus more on the retail aspect of the business. As an example, in
2001, its direct marketing insurance unit was sold to Dutch Insurance for 1.3 Billion dollars.
In June of 2011, JC Penney announced that Ron Johnson was selected to be the next CEO of the
company. In his 17 months of leadership at JC Penney, the company performed very poorly. Its
market share declined, profits decreased, and the company laid off hundreds of employees and
closed numerous stores throughout the United States. Ron Johnson changed the corporate culture
and his strategies proved to be detrimental.

Disadvantages Of Dairy Milk
Got milk? Dairy cow milk isn t as good for the public we had originally thought. By not drinking
dairy cow milk we can be healthier by switching to other alternative sources of milk. Dairy cows
are being milked all day long showing that animal care should be improved. By reducing our
dairy consumption, we would reduce our need for cows which will also save the environment
from water usage and greenhouse gas emissions. In most cases, dairy milk has always been the
go to option in our fridges since we were children. Even today, dairy milk is the leading milk
product, and it accounts for the majority of milk drank in the United States. However, these days
new alternatives have risen such as soy milk or almond milk to name a few. In fact, a Mintel
research study done in 2015 found that non dairy milk purchases in the United States had
increased by 9% just that year (Rowland, 2017). This showed a drastic change in consumer
habits in America because the American milk market had traditionally been dominated by dairy.
To put things in perspective, that same Mintel study found that almost half, 49%, of Americans
drink non dairy milk (US, n.d). This massive increase in recent non dairy milk consumption
reflects a massive increase in accessibility to non dairy milk products. Just ten years ago access to
non dairy products was far more limited than it is today, and the non dairy products available were
undesirable. Because of advances in food science, there are not only more non dairy

Apple Vs. Android
Apple vs. Android
For many years people would debate which is the best smartphone either Apple or Android. Some
people might go with Android because of the fancy look of the phone. Truth is Apple seems to be
the more dominant smartphone because of the simple texture and because it s very simple to use.
In my perspective,I think Apple is really more efficient than any other Android. Android is very
complex to use compared to the Iphone s. I have 3 reasons why I think Apple is better; it s quick
and easy to use, the amount of apps , and lastly the most important the security Apple has.
Android also has its advantages over Apple but very minor ones. One advantage it has that it has
an expandable storage card. Iphone s don t have this feature, but you can easily get a memory
card for the computer and store all your pictures and files so basically it s no problem. It also one
minor advantage is that it has a bigger screen than Samsung. Which the creator of apple Bill Gates

differences of economic situation between member states but it can be a main difficulties for EU to

competing with other member states.
In the European level, EU are also did a lot of work trying to leading member states participate
on the process of adopt a common social policy but it is difficult as well. Since the Maastricht

activates. This has given to the control measures that are based on voluntarism, education and the

Interstitial Nephritis
A child with abrupt onset of acute kidney injury with a fever, rash, and a urinalysis with abnormal
urinary sediment should be highly suspected of having acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). In 75% of
cases, AIN is a drug induced hypersensitivity reaction. It is characterized by the classic triad of
fever, rash, and arthralgia, with acute renal dysfunction resulting from the infiltration and activity of
inflammatory cells when the drug/antigen is exposed to the interstitium of the kidney. Medications
commonly associated with AIN include nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
antibiotics, diuretics, and proton pump inhibitors. Nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs are the
most common, the most studied, and possibly the most avoidable drugs that cause AIN induced
acute kidney injury. The mainstay of treatment of drug induced AIN is to discontinue treatment
with the offending drug as soon as possible and restore and/or maintain intravascular volume with
isotonic fluids to maintain renal perfusion. Once adequate renal perfusion has been accomplished,
close monitoring of fluid and electrolytebalance is of utmost importance.
Avoidance of other nephrotoxic drugs is equally important; therefore, the other 3 answer choices are

The History Of El Salvador
The history of El Salvador begins with the time period in which indigenous peoples resided in the
country. According to Roy Poland, in Culture and Customs of El Salvador, El Salvador was
conquered by the Spanish in 1524; the spanish found the country was divided into three states (13).
The spaniards hegemonic influence finally converted El Salvadorinto a Spanish colony after
twenty six years of indigenous resistance(Poland 14). Such conquest brought violence, diseases,
and poverty to the indigenous people. The invasion of El Salvador by the Spanish also resulted
in mestizaje, racial mixing. The colonial period lasted until 1821(Poland 14). El Salvador finally
became independent from Spain in 1821 and joined the United Provinces of Central America in
1823; however, in 1840 El Salvador gained full independence (Eileen Garron Batres 6), One of
the most important crops in El Salvador during the 1800 s and 1900 s was coffee; during the 1900
s El Salvador was the third largest coffee producer internationally (Susan B. Hecht).
After colonization La Matanza Twentieth century El Salvador is made up of violence, suffering,

Quest for Wisdom Essay
Quest for Wisdom: Two Approaches
Two approaches to the Quest for Wisdom that I enjoyed are Walden, by Henry David Thoreau and
Man s Search for Meaning, by Viktor E. Frankl. Both of the authors took similar approaches by
using narration of a main segment of their lives to explain their philosophy and how they arrived at
their conclusions. Though both conclusions represent individualism they are strikingly different.
Thoreau values the doctrines of Transcendentalism, seeking ones inner self through Nature, while
Frankl Existentialism values the interpretation of individual experiences and responsibility of ones
actions.
Thoreau spent years building his approach and developing his own beliefs. Born in Concord,
Massachusetts, in July ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His statement to man seeking a similar life, was: I would not have any one adopt my mode of
living on any account; for, beside that before he has fairly learned it I may have found out
another for myself, I desire that there may be as many different persons in the world as possible;
but I would have each one be very careful to find out and pursue his own way, and not his father s
or his mother s or his neighbor s instead. The youth may build or plant or sail, only let him not be
hindered from doing that which he tells me he would like to do. It is by a mathematical point
only that we are wise, as the sailor or the fugitive slave keeps the polestar in his eye; but that is
sufficient guidance for all our life. (P158 Thoreau) I believe instead through out his writings,
Thoreau was trying to suggest that a person be more self reliant and self sufficient. That people
gain wealth in personal experience and the beauty of Nature. Through self exploration and
discovery they seek the truth and draw inner strength from it.
Viktor Frankl began his education early in the study of psychology. He finished his high school
years with a psychoanalytic essay on the philosopher Schopenhauer, a publication in the
International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and began correspondence with Sigmund Freud. In 1925, a

Hydrological Alterations Due to Climate Change
Water constitutes an indispensable component of climate system found in all parts of biosphere.
Increased temperatures reported throughout the last century resulted in a number of hydrological
alterations extending from modification of precipitation patterns, rapid snow and ice retreat, to
changes in total runoff and increasing number of intensive or extreme events. These changes of
climateassociated with the water availability show substantial spatial and temporal variability
(Bates et al., 2008). In Europe, climate change has a strong north south gradient, imposing positive
changes in the north and negative changes in the south in terms of rainfall and precipitation
(Christensen and Christensen, 2007). Areas such as the Mediterranean basin are particularly
vulnerable and projected to experience more frequent, long lasting and intensive drought events.
Therefore as indicated by several studies annual river discharge is expected to decrease along
with high seasonal flow variability (Alcamo et al., 2007; Arnell, 2004; Iglesias et al., 2011;
Milly et al., 2005). Likewise with the general Mediterranean trend, Italy is exposed to progressive
water scarcity as indicated by past observations and future projections. Over the last five decades
precipitation was decreased by 14% along the country, while a further diminishing is the main
projection of the IPCC scenarios towards the end of 2060. Under the A2 emission scenario 10%
precipitation decrease is predicted for the north and

John Winthrop s Vision Of A Prosperous Christian...
The presence of religion is ingrained into the history of the United States of America. Serving as a
haven for disgruntled religious rebels from the Old World, the colonies became embroiled into the
question of Christian identity. John Winthrop envisioned that a Christian utopia would arise in the
New World, convinced it would become reality as long as the inhabitants practiced Christianityin its
proper form. Despite these high aspirations, future believers saw Winthrop s vision fall short.
Cotton Mather believes that the Christian community fell victim to a sinful environment.
Alternatively, preacher Jonathan Edwards believes that the self hinders a meaningful relationship
with Christ. All men of great faith, they believed that indulgence in sinwould bring about ruin to
their communities, and issued public warnings that advised fellow believers on how to save their
souls, and by extension, their communities. Winthrop s vision of a prosperous Christian community
was defined by several key characteristics, given by Winthrop himself. Winthrop states ...so this
great King will have many stewards, counting Himself more honored in dispensing His gifts to man
by man, than if He did it by His own immediate hands (166). Winthrop believes that it is the duty of
the community to directly practice Christian doctrine and values. It is through this direct action that
Godwill bring about prosperity to the population. Winthrop emphasizes in particular the need to be
charitable,

The Yellow Press Book Summary
1. The Yellow Press as defined in our book was a battle to sell more newspapers that pitted the
New York World owned by Joseph Pulitzer and the New York Journal owned by William
Randolph Hearst against one another (book p. A 70). Hearst used the color yellow to print his
comics mixing facts with sensationalizing accounts of crime and political corruption with
aggressive appeals to patriot sentiments (book p. 667). Pulitzer and Hearst send reporters to Cuba.
They sent back reports of Spanish cruelty some of which are factual and some that were not. These
stories begin to rile the American people. Also at this time, Thomas Edison invents the motion
picture camera and people are shown newsreels of the Cuban struggles. Atrocities are shown...

The Filipinos had been fighting the Spanish prior to the arrival of the U.S. Aguinaldo knew he
needed a major power to help him with his struggle. Aguinaldo met with Dewey in Hong Kong
and sailed with him to the Philippines. After Dewey s naval victory in the Manila Bay,
Aguinaldo believed he could begin Filipino independence so he formed his government based
on the U.S. Constitution. However, the U. S. turned against him when they annexed the island
nation. McKinley justified his position saying it would take them 100 years to understand what
true freedom means (book, p.672). At the time of the insurrection, America was becoming
aware of the atrocities committed by American troops such as the burning of villages, torture of
POW s, and rape and execution of civilians (book, p.677). Aguinaldo was not treated fairly at all.
If the U.S. was not so short sighted, he could have founded his government. We could have had a
stronger ally during WWII. We were lucky the Japanese were more brutal than we were.
However, in our defense, we did our best to Americanize the island nation by modernizing their
infrastructure, education and medical treatment systems (book, p. 672). Why was this war so
little remembered by the American people? I believe this had a lot to do with Douglas McArthur.
He loved the Filipino people and it about killed him to leave them to the Japanese. He vowed to
return and return he did. He along with his Filipino guerillas defeated the Japanese. After winning
WWII, the Philippines were granted their independence. I believe this is why no one knows about

In Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare Sir Andrew Aguecheek s, a knight, and Malvolio s, the

Furthermore, he does not have the sensitive nature that she longs for in a man. Instead, Aguecheek
is only interested in the Countess s beauty, wealth, and the opportunity she presents to rise in

401 K Retirement Plan Essay
Retirement plan has its advantage and disadvantage. Mostly it is based on the choice of the

The 401 k plan is useful based on the age and age of employment history. It is right to choice this

It is not beneficial for me because the company where I am recently working I am not going to

The Greatest Strength By Jim Collins Essay
Greatness is often sought but rarely had. Jim Collins, like many of his readers, has, however,
achieved greatness in his writing of Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and
Others Don t. Good to Great is less of an examination of how good companies become great but
more of an analysis of leadershipand social skills embraced by society s most successful through
the lens of the business world. This is the book s greatest strength; by delivering concise
information that can be utilized on the personal level, Collins is able to broadcast what would
normally be considered mundane business talk by most in a fashion that is both interesting and
actionable to the book s more than 4,000,000 buyers. Achieving best seller status, Good to Great
aims to help individuals with a background in business, politics and other leadership backgrounds
become best sellers, themselves, in their respective fields. By breaking down informational content
into its simplest forms, providing ample evidence, repeatedly engaging in repetition, and by tag
lining the most important themes and ideas, Collins hits the mark. Good to Great is methodical in
its approach of conveying its information. Each chapter has a prevailing theme that focuses in on a
key area such as the hedgehog concept which Collins suggests businesses use to determine the
model under which they will operate. Additionally, each chapter seems distinct, yet related to the
preceding and succeeding one, lacing the book together

job, such as hammers and x rays. They will often oversee technicians and coordinate with other
scientists (What Geoscientists Do section).
What Level of Education and Special Training is Required?
For most entry level positions, Geoscientists need at least a bachelor s degree. Some, however,
begin their career with a master s degree. For most basic research and college teaching positions, a
Ph.D. is necessary. A degree in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, or computer

The Case Of Fisher V. University Of Texas At Austin Essay
Writing in opinion of the court in the case of Fisher V. University of Texas at Austin (II). This
case had been previously heard by the Supreme Court resulting in a 7 1 decision that explained
the University had no grounds to apply any preference to racial minorities in the application or
the acceptance process. The case was reopened at both the fifth circuit court and the Supreme
Court. There will be seven justices presiding over this case, with the death of Justice Antonin
Scalia and Justice Elena Kagan recusing herself. The question of making admission decisions
on the basis of race had been debated before in the Supreme Court, in the case of Grutter v.
Bollinger. The University of Michigan Law School had denied the admission of Barbara
Grutter, a white female. The Law School admits that it uses race as a factor in making
admissions decisions because it serves a compelling interest in achieving diversity among its
student body. The court ruled in favor of the University of Michigan, because no single factor
eliminated a certain applicant from being denied admission and race was seen as a factor that
would help diversity in the law school. This case was referred to in the discussion phase of this
hearing. In the case, the plaintiff accused UT at Austin of racially discriminating against her in the
application and acceptance process. Under the first application procedure that lasted up until 1997,
two factors were taken into consideration, the applicant s performance in

Deforestation In Rainforests
Rich black soil, towering tropical trees, the distant sound of a hollering monkey and the smell of
damp leaves paint the picture of a tropical rainforest. The most famous and valuable tropical forests
include the Amazon, Congo Basin, Indonesia and the forests of the Russian Far East and have been
debated as endangered for decades. These rainforests mainly differ in soils, geology, precipitation
patterns, the wildlife which resides there but all share the abundance of natural wealth including
sturdy woods, medicines and spices and are sought out by many. However the long debated
question still stands if deforestationis something of the past or an on going and current threat.
Deforestation is defined as the intentional or natural clearance of forests on a massive scale,
often resulting in damage to the quality of the land and adverse environment effects. () Today
forests still cover roughly 30% of the worlds land area however this number is sure to dwindle
down due to the loss of 46 58 thousand square miles annually, equivalent to approximately 48
footballs fields every minute. (WWF) The decline in trees translates for loss of habitat and homes
for the millions of exotic creatures which call rainforests for example the Amazon, home. The
Amazon alone is home to more than two thirds of the 1.4 million species known to man however
this is not even close to the extent of the wealth the drizzly rainforesthas to offer. (Rothbard, David
and Craig Rucker) Species who s habitats are threatened by deforestation are often unable to
prosper in the small forested acres left behind. Therefore species become vulnerable to trophy
hunters or poachers causing numbers to begin to dwindle, some eventually succumbing to
extinction. Even a lighter non commercial local deforestation can result in extinctions due to many
unique species living in small isolated parts of the rainforests across the globe. (WWF) According
to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) affected species includes: giant pandas, tigers, rhinos,
orangutans, Asian elephant, many species of apes like the gorilla and the Amur leopard (WWF).
Rainforests are not only threatened by the effects of commercial and large scale deforestation but
also by the communities of people

Problem-Solving Courts are Helping to Reform the Justice...
I believe that one of the best reforms to our justice system is the growing number of Problem
Solving Courts. Problem Solving Courts are specialized courts that focus on specific problems in
society, such as drug abuse, prostitution, mental health, domestic violence, etc (Courts). I have
chosen drug courts more specifically to research. According to drugpolicy.org, in 2012 1.55
million people were arrested for non violent drug charges (Drug Policy Alliance). This is an
astounding amount of people being arrested, which is why I believe it is important to have problem
solving courts. Unlike traditional courts, these specialized courts address the issues that individuals

Possibly one of the largest obstacles in creating problem solving courts is economical/political
issues. With our nation in a recession many states are seeing budget cuts. The National Center for
State Courts stated that as of 2011, a large number of state and local courts had experienced
budget cuts of 15 to 20 percent since 2009 (Griller, 2011). The article also stated that despite the
fact that these courts are cost effective in the long run, hard dollar cost per case figures are
beginning to trump soft dollar crime reduction benefits (Griller, 2011). One idea to help problem
solving courts make it through budget cuts is to have the court provide date periodically that shows
evidence of rehabilitation, declining jail costs, and how this system is improving neighborhoods.
The Seattle Municipal Court has done just this, and has managed to maintain funding to their
problem solving courts while there have been budget cuts to the city government, as well as judicial
position reductions (Griller, 2011). Currently, drug courts have been proven to be successful at
reducing recidivism of offenders. In the United States there are about 120,000 people receiving
help in order to rehabilitate them and to try to reduce the chances of recidivism (Office of
National Drug Control Policy, 2011). These programs require individuals to participate in the
programs for a minimum of one year. During this year the individuals are required to appear in

American History Reflection
Before I took this class, American History, my childhood was influenced by movies and books
about Cavalry and Indians. My young mind developed a likeness to the Cavalry on horseback. It
was impressive to look at that I wanted to be one of them. Needless to say, I am pro Cavalry. To
me they represent strength, gallantry, and savior of the oppressed.
The film, Trail of Tears, and the lecture taught me a different side of the US Cavalry. My thought of
them as defender for those who cannot defend themselves became blurry. Maybe, as soldiers, who
sworn an oath to obey the President of the United State, they were following orders. For my
personal reflection, it is unbelievable that American history included death march and ethnic
cleansing. It is difficult to fathom that these events occurred America fought the British and drove
them away. I was assuming that the unification of American citizens would follow the revolutionary
war. But, when the Cherokee Indians were forced to their lands in Georgia and march towards
west of Mississippi, with soldiers and rifles aimed at them, it was a disturbing scenario to me. It
was even called the death march, perhaps because a quarter of the Cherokee Indians perished
during the march, in which many were elderly and children. The question that came into my mind
was, why did President Andrew Jackson picked the winter months to force the Cherokee Indians to
move. He could easily make it happen, but he did not.
On a personal reflection,

Summary Of To A Mouse And To A Mouse
In 1786, Robert Burns published his first line of poetry Poems: Chiefly in Scottish Dialect which
made him well known with the poems of To a Mouse , and To a Louse . His techniques included
writing six lines for each stanza. The rhyme scheme to these lines consist of AAABA giving the
first, second, third, and fifth lines four pairs of stressed and unstressed syllables. What I mean by if
you stress the first syllable, the subject will be totally different than an unstressed subject. In his
poetry, the fourth and sixth lines are different from the other lines. These two lines consist of two
pairs of stressed and unstressed syllables which is similar to a limerick or a ballad. This essay
will be a compare and contrast of his two poems To a Mouse, and To a Louse and a breakdown of
these stanzas. In Burns s poem of To a Mouse , his first stanza is talking about the destruction of
a mouse s nest as the character is doing his winter plowing. As he addresses the mouse he is
reassuring the mouse there is no harm intended. It moves onto him, saying nature has been
destroyed by man s rule and how man s dominion is the reason the mouse is afraid of man. The
plowman s humanity is described as poor, and the mouse s earth born companion. Daimen means

Advantages And Disadvantages Of China In The 19th Century

Essay about Obligation to Obey Governing Bodies
I believe it is safe to say that the subjects of any legitimate state have an obligation to at obey
their governing bodies. Underlying my own obedience to my country s laws are a number of
reasons an understanding of my obligation to take responsibility for my own actions, a
recognition of my government s authority over me, a belief that the laws of my country are well
founded, and a fear of the consequences of disobeying said laws. Without laws, a society would

Robert Wolff may argue that we have no obligation to obey the law because that would be in
conflict with our duty to retain our moral autonomy. As such, no state has legitimate authority over
its subjects. However, he is unable to convince me that I am obligated to act autonomously. I
agree that I am existentially free and obligated to take responsibility for my own actions, but
being fully autonomous is nothing but a fictional ideal. He states: The moral condition demands
that we acknowledge responsibility and achieve autonomy wherever and whenever possible. I
agree, but I maintain that living autonomously at all times is simply not possible in a world
where we live with other people whose desires and freedoms are in competition with our own. I
am positive that there is not one married individual in the world who can say with confidence that
he or she is wholly autonomous. Therefore, I admit that I am not wholly autonomous and that the
Canadian government has legitimate authority over me. An anarchic state, in which the state has
no legitimate authority and therefore cannot enforce its laws, would lead to the war of all
against all , as Hobbes eloquently puts it. However, while I don t believe that we are obligated to
act autonomously at all times, I do believe that we are all entitled to self determination and that we
have a moral obligation to look after the well being of our

The Policy Of Appeasement During The Outbreak Of War Essay
Evaluate the view that the policy of appeasement played a major role in the outbreak of war in
Europe in 1939. After the mass amount of life lost in World War One, many countries, through
the League of Nations, opted to prevent future conflict. Due to the failure collective security, the
idea that countries could discourage aggression, appeasement became a policy adopted in the
1930s, especially by the British. Appeasement was developed in the belief that countries such as
Germany were unfairly treated in the Treaty of Versailles. It was used in hope to prevent
Germany and Italy going to war. Appeasement was seen to be magnanimous, good business,
idealistic and a form of security. The policy of appeasement was widely pursued by Britain and
France in the 1930s, refers to attempting to satisfy Germany s demands by negotiation and
compromise in order to avoid another war. However due to its failure, the policy of
appeasement, to a large extent was responsible for the outbreak of war in 1939. It is clear that if
the Western Powers had retaliated against Hitler, war could have been avoided. Despite large
extent the policy of appeasement in the outbreak of war it is superseded by other factors as well.
The policy of appeasement allowed for some of Hitler s goal of Lebensraum, many factors
causing the outbreak of War in Europe. Hitler ordered German rearmament in October 1933.
Rearmament was Germany s plea for equality, as a result of the crippling terms of the Treaty of

Analysis Of I Was A Puerto Rican, By Esmeralda Santiago
Question 1 Foreshadowing
I push my cart away, toward the apples and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness
predictable and bittersweet. This quote, and entire prologue, are taken from the memoir When I
was a Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago and they foreshadow that her whole life is changed,
just like the fruit she eats and that are in her life. Santiago life is totally turned around in this
memoir and the prologue shows that. The author weaves foreshadowing into the memoir by
showing us how her life changed dramatically and once she came to the United States everything
was different, just like fruit here in the United States and in Puerto Rico. The author uses the
technique of foreshadowing to give something to look forward to in her story and build suspense
and anticipation.
Santiago used foreshadowing to show that her life changed and that it changed a lot. Her life is
foreshadowed that it will change and that she lets her past go. Leaving her past in the past and
moving on with her present and future. Santiago s life was horrible growing up. Her parents did
not always get along, their home was not always safe, clean, and good for her and her family, they
were always moving, etc. After they moved to New York, a couple years later, her life was
changed. She was offered an acting role and then later on went to Harvard with a scholarship. As
you can see, she left her past in the past and went on with her amazing new life. When I was a

Sugar Bowl Swot Analysis Essay
Since the transition from Westlake to Sugar Bowl, the business has experienced a structural
rejuvenation and incredible financial growth. A quick SWOT analysis reveals the key strengths
and opportunities that make Sugar Bowl a viable business in the long term. The company s key
strengths are Shelby Givens as its strategic leader and Charlie Campbell as its private event sales
person. Both individuals are crucial intangible resources that help Sugar Bowl achieve a sustainable
competitive advantage.
Givens s obtained valuable knowledge about marketing from the general manager that runs a
successful bowling venue in Washington, D.C. In addition, she managed to find methods to
increase revenue by keeping costs down. For example, she was able to increase average
customer spending to $50 by narrowing down the menu, re negotiating the company s catering
contract, and increasing the prices of the best selling plates (2012, p. 8). In like manner, Charlie
Campbell was able to quickly line up a potential of $35,000 in revenue in his first months working
with the company. Campbell provides valuable sales experience and personal network with
numerous companies. In the other hand, Sugar Bowl is able to exploit opportunities like the
closure of a 24 lane bowling facility, influx of their target ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

New bowling venues can also exploit the lack of competition in Raleigh and cause an erosion in
Sugar Bowl s profits. A developed perceptual acuity will help identify indirect competitors that can
detract customers from the company. The construction of the wine and cheese bar and the art studio
are examples of unorthodox competitors. Lastly, new trends could rise up and disrupt the demand
for urban lounges like Sugar Bowl. Environmental monitoring will help identify trends that can
negatively impact the competitive landscape for

Flight 11
On the morning of September 11th, 2001, four planes were hijacked in mid flight. These planes
were hijacked by multiple terrorists, who planned to conduct suicide attacks on America. Soon
after the planes were hijacked, the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade
Center, tragically killing everyone on the plane and killing hundreds on the floors of the World
Trade Center. 1,402 deaths occurred in the North Tower, and 87 deaths occurred inside Flight 11
(the plane that crashed into the North Tower.) Immediately after the first attack, NYPD and FDNY
forces dispatched units to the scene, and President George W. Bush was alerted. At the time, he was
in a Florida elementary school, reading to children. As evacuation processes happened throughout
the South Tower of the WTC, the second hijacked... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In response to the second attack, the FAA banned all takeoffs of flights going to NYC or around
the city, and the Port Authority closed all bridges and tunnels in the NYC area. Next, President
George W. Bush gave a statement from Florida, responding to the attacks, calling them an apparent
terrorist attack on our country. Only 6 minutes after his initial statement did the third attack occur,
and it was on the Pentagon. Hijackers crashed Flight 77, the third plane, into the western side of
the Pentagon, killing 59 on board and 125 people inside the building. Consequently, the FAA
grounds all flights over or bound for the United States, and sends thousands of commercial flights
and private planes to airports in Canada and the U.S. Additionally, the White House, Capitol, and
other high profile places are evacuated as well, in case of another attack. In the late morning,
passengers aboard Flight 93, the fourth hijacked plane, are alerted of the attacks by friends and
family. In response to that, they panic and try to fight the hijackers to retake the

Disney World-Personal Narrative
I never knew that I was a part of something bigger than a backup, but I turned out to be. Now the
fate of every sliver of good magic Walt Disney ever dreamed up rests on me me and the team, I
should say. I suppose it all started, that everything changed at midnight.
I had just gone to sleep after a long day of homework when I woke up, not in my bed, but right
down the middle of Main Street USA . I was standing at the flagpole facing the magnificent
Cinderella Castle. I had to stop and think a second. How was I in Disney World? Why was it so
deserted? It was practically a ghost town here in the wee hours of night. Then I turned and saw a
boy sitting on the bench. I was certainly taken aback by the appearance of someone else. He
motioned toward me and as I came closer, I soon recognized him. It was that smart British kid who
could do things with a computer most adults wouldn t understand. It was Dell Philby.
So you re the extra, aren t you? he said as I approached the bench.
Extra what? I stuttered, still perplexed by this whole situation. ... Show more content on

We all crammed into a car and the ride took off. I heard the voice I knew so well from riding this
a hundred times. I relaxed like any average park guest would until I felt the sudden jerk of the

Morrow, but it never came. A new voice came through the loudspeakers. Ladies and gentleman,
Keepers and Fairlies! This is your captain speaking. We re experiencing a few delays, some new
twists and turns. Hold onto your hats, because you re about to learn who really is the Main
Attraction! Mwahahahahahaha! the voice said. I noticed Drina and Wil wince at the term Fairlie,
but there was no time to ponder that. The worst of it was the voice itself. This voice was the

research statistically determines the profits of supermarkets based on the sales of food items,
non food items and size of supermarket. The regression model was done on both models to
determine that in both models, increase in sales and size of stores increases the overall profit.
However the model with independent variables sales of food items, sales of non food items and
size of stores is the more relevant model. Introduction: There are 10 supermarkets with different
kinds of products. These products are food products and non food products. The paper wants to

Ancient Jews And Their Belief Of God
Ancient Jews and their Belief in God(s)
Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have maintained their customs and religion. One of
the most common assumptions has been that the ancient Jews have always been monotheistic. Yet,
upon closer examination, this conventional wisdom is inaccurate. Ugaritic texts, archeological data,
and the Biblical narrative itself all demonstrate that the ancient Jews were not monotheistic,
contrary to what many believe. In fact, there is proof that they acknowledged and sometimes
worshipped other gods, as late as the seventh century CE. In order to grasp what this means,
there needs to be an understanding of who the ancient Jews were, who their neighbors were, and
what was worshipped at the time. To understand what the ancient Jews believed in, we first must
define who these ancient Jews were. The first mention of ancient Jews in history is in the year
1207 BCE. In the book, Ancient Inscriptions: Voices from the Biblical World, an Egyptian King
Merneptah tries to conquer many lands through his campaign to achieve greatness. He writes
about his conquests and mentions Israel by saying, Israel is laid to waste, his seed is no more.
Ronald Hendel, a Biblical scholar, cites this verse in his article, Israel among the Nations, and we
begin to see mention of the Jewish people in history. Up until this point, there is no historical
proof that a separate nation of Israel existed. This verse gives us evidence of the coexistence of
Israel and

Role Of Gladiatorial Sports In Roman Times
Matthew Melnychuk4/28/16
Latin Ms.CellaPeriod 3
Sports During The Roman Time Period During the Roman Times from (31 BCE to 476 CE)
sports were both things that many did in their daily life and as well as Roman Fighting games.
Not all Roman games were violent and played by men. Many Roman kids would swim, ride
horses, hunt and fish, play board games during their leisure time. Sports were very important to the
Romans because some had a religious meaning to them. Gladiatorial games in Ancient Rome and
modern sports have more in common than some would think. Violence has been a key component
to the success of each of these games. Many spectators watched as the Coliseum was filled with
blood from brutal gladiatorial matches. These days, hundreds of people watch two men fight in a
boxing ring. After thinking about gladiatorial games and looking at modern sports see similarities
between the two. The Romans believed that they inherited the practice of gladiatorial games from
the Etruscans who used them as part of a funeral ritual. The first gladiatorial games were offered in
Rome in 264 BCE by sons of Junius Brutus Pera in their father s honor. Even though this ritual
began as a ceremony to honor important men after their death, it began ... Show more content on

Running, Boxing, and Wrestling helped with fitness and strength as well as stamina. During
boxing they would wrap their hands in cloth because they didn t have boxing gloves like we have

stream. Mostly men and boys were taught how to swim. Horseback Riding was something that was
taught to young boys because it was something they should always know. Hunting and Fishing was
also something that Men and boys mostly did. Many men taught their boys to hunt and fish so they

La Casa De Amistad
Focusing on immigration rights for people of Latin descent I chose La Casa de Amistad. This
organization founded in 1973 by Father John Phalen strives to create a grounded community in
South Bend. Due to their passion and consistent effort to bring forth opportunity and development
for the community it is no surprise that they have done well throughout the years in the vast
amount of services they offer. However what I shall be focusing on is their Immigration Legal
Services program and how it goes hand in hand with the Catholic Social Teachingprinciple of
participation.

individuals to create an active community which invests in the nation. With their ... Show more

That in itself and each person s contribution with drinks, food, and their eagerness to share
demonstrated that even before becoming citizens La Casa de Amistad had already created the
sense of community. Each time I go to see them I am always welcomed with opened arms and a
snack, and it creates a feeling of warmth within me. For seeing these vital pillars in our nation
strive to be recognized as fellow citizens for the toil and struggle that they go through day in and
day out to create a better nation is beautiful. They not only achieve that but they have a
community that cares and is supportive of them who wishes to see them have the ability to
finally get the chance to vote and have their voices recognized for they are part of our nation and
should be treated with dignity and respect. As I spoke with Nancy I was amazed at the results
that they have had with this program since it began ten years ago, for they have had a one
hundred percent pass rate of the naturalization exam, with over 400 people from 28 nations.
Based on the effectiveness I don t have anything to see in regards to criticisms for they have done
all to create a truly global community of individuals by giving them the resources needed to be

  • 4. The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in... The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in Valediction: for Weeping In John Donne s A Valediction: for Weeping, the speaker consoles his lover before leaving on a sea voyage and begs her not to cry. Crying, the speaker tells his lover this poem at the docks before he boards his ship going abroad. Donne uses a spherical image as the central metaphor in his poem. When Donne uses irony, paradox, and hyperbole including the use of round images such as: coins, globes, and tears he strengthens the spherical conceit. By comparing two seeming opposites like tears and love as his conceit, Donne uses the spherical image as the central paradox in A Valediction: Of Weeping. Donne opens the poem with the speaker ... The fruit and the emblem are round images describing their tears, the emblem symbolizes both the literal round image and the lover s face (the tear bears her emblem or face). As the tear bearing her image falls, the speaker fears the ending of their love if she cries, as the speaker states: So thou and I are nothing then, when on a diverse shore (9). In the second stanza, the speaker tries to convince her that they are still together, even when they are separated, and begs her not to weep. The second stanza opens with a ball image forming out of nothing into a globe. A worker can take a round ball . . .and quickly make that, which was nothing, all (12). The globe and their love represent all, because the globe represents all of the entire world, where as, the love encompasses all of their individual worlds or spheres. • 5. In Defense Of Distraction By Sam Anderson Although the title of the essay is In Defense of Distraction, Sam Anderson is attacking the culture of distraction. We are living in a culture where everyone is glued to technology and wants everything to come in a single instant. He mentions that humanity suffers from a serious poverty, a dearth of focus and attention. Distractions consume us, devouring our concentration, alleviating our boredom, and constantly pestering us. We cannot help the fact that we are so easily distracted; everywhere we go there, are bright neon advertisements, constant phone buzzes, and loud car horns blaring. We all will succumb to these inevitable distractions of society, Anderson states We are, in short, terminally distracted (Anderson 2). In Defense of Distraction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Summary Of Tuesdays With Morrie Aphorism Narrative Aphorisms are statements of observations that express an opinion or remarks of wisdom. Tuesdays With Morrie is a book about a man who s dying from ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ( What Is ALS? ) Morrie uses aphorisms quite frequently to accept his future and make peace with the past. The two aphorisms I chose are about making your life as fulfilling as possible. Not only can they relate to me personally in small ways, but also in bigger and deeper ways. In Tuesday s with Morrie, Morrie had many aphorisms that not only helped himself but helped others. I can t completely forget about these relationships because they can help me grow and become a better person. I can t deny my faults in those relationships or blame the ending of the relationship on the other person or else I ll repeat my mistakes in other relationships. I also can t forget the positive aspects of the relationship and the happy moments without risking living a life of misery and hate. Morrie is well known for his aphorisms but he s not the only one who comes up with these words of truth. An aphorism not of Morrie s but of similar depth and effect comes from the poet, George Gordon Byron. He said, It is very certain that the desire of life prolongs it. (Aphorisms:Life) Lord Byron lived from 1788 to 1824 and was a big contribution to the Romanticism era (Lord Byron Biography). Romanticism was an era of creation made of feelings and expression and new deep thought (Romanticism). This aphorism is definitely a reflection of the era. (Romanticism) I believe that this aphorism means that being excited and enthusiastic about living and wanting to live will make your life longer. If you re always dreading or fearing life, it will appear shorter and less satisfying to you. For me personally, one of my biggest fears is death. Reading Tuesdays with Morrie made me amazed and almost jealous of Morrie s outlook on death. I always fear I ll never live a long, fulfilled life. • 7. Drunk Driving Laws Essay Enforcing Drunk Driving Laws In the United States, driving under the influence of alcohol is a major problem as it accounts for a high number of road fatalities. It is a criminal offense for a person to drive under the influence of alcohol in almost all countries in the world. Nations impose penalties for drunk driving; however, they vary widely from states to states. Nevertheless, many countries seem to come to an agreement that drunk driving claims many lives in a year, which is intolerable. For instance, in 2008 alone, in the US, more than 11000 lives perished in the road carnage due to drivers driving under the influence of alcohol (Grant 16). Therefore, the government should employ or enforce stricter laws towards driving under the influence, to reduce road fatalities. Most of the drivers are well conversant with the laws and consequences against driving under the influence of alcohol. However, ignorance and negligence have been a thing in their DNA, as the laws on driving under the influence are lenient and loose. Nevertheless, the victims families and friends lives get ruined due to the sudden death of their beloved one who could be their bread winners, and they cannot reclaim their lives back. The main point about the essay is to alert people about the issues of torturing animals just for the sake of our humanistic pleasure. What is socially acceptable as normal behavior is not always the most ethical or moral behavior. At the beginning of the essay the author describes an annual tradition in Maine, the LobsterFestival. • 12. Outsourcing Research Paper Throughout my paper, my point is to portray the effect of the outsourcing of American occupations abroad. There are two strong arguments with outsourcing: one that accepts the handiness and profits of the outsourcing and the other that energetically restricts outsourcing and focus on its negatives. Government organizations accept that outsourcingmay decrease the expense of the assembling of items and give administrations less expensive cost, and others feel that outsourcing has triggered huge layoffs and loss of jobs. America needs to cease outsourcing due to the negative effects it has on our country. Outsourcing takes occupations away from Americans, causes considerably more economic issues, and can lessen the quality of materials.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The driving components for outsourcing are clear: lesser expenses all the way around. A machine software engineer in India makes $5,880 to $11,000, while an American machine software engineer wins in the middle of $60,000 and $80,000. American organizations stand to spare measures of cash by outsourcing. Today, gauges of employment misfortune in the United Statespropose that in the last ten years, between 400,000 to 500,000 data engineering preparing jobs have been outsourced. While this speaks to a moderately little parcel of the United States work power of around 130 million laborers (Tyson), concerns over the loss of profoundly talented employees and expectations that the outsourcing pattern will keep on growing have made outsourcing an imperative and questionable subject. Unfortunately, the wave of outsourcing is going to continue in the United States, and it is only going to get worse. A UC Berkeley s Haas School of Business study noted that near 11 percent of all occupations in the United States are helpless to outsourcing. Further, gauges demonstrate that outsourcing is going to be an ongoing Phenom, as Forrester Research evaluates that by 2015, the United States will lose 3.3 million jobs to outsourcing. By not drinking dairy cow milk we can be healthier by switching to other alternative sources of milk. Dairy cows are being milked all day long showing that animal care should be improved. By reducing our dairy consumption, we would reduce our need for cows which will also save the environment from water usage and greenhouse gas emissions. In most cases, dairy milk has always been the go to option in our fridges since we were children. Even today, dairy milk is the leading milk product, and it accounts for the majority of milk drank in the United States. However, these days new alternatives have risen such as soy milk or almond milk to name a few. In fact, a Mintel research study done in 2015 found that non dairy milk purchases in the United States had increased by 9% just that year (Rowland, 2017). This showed a drastic change in consumer habits in America because the American milk market had traditionally been dominated by dairy. To put things in perspective, that same Mintel study found that almost half, 49%, of Americans drink non dairy milk (US, n.d). This massive increase in recent non dairy milk consumption reflects a massive increase in accessibility to non dairy milk products. Just ten years ago access to non dairy products was far more limited than it is today, and the non dairy products available were undesirable. Some people might go with Android because of the fancy look of the phone. Truth is Apple seems to be the more dominant smartphone because of the simple texture and because it s very simple to use. In my perspective,I think Apple is really more efficient than any other Android. Android is very complex to use compared to the Iphone s. Interstitial Nephritis A child with abrupt onset of acute kidney injury with a fever, rash, and a urinalysis with abnormal urinary sediment should be highly suspected of having acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). In 75% of cases, AIN is a drug induced hypersensitivity reaction. It is characterized by the classic triad of fever, rash, and arthralgia, with acute renal dysfunction resulting from the infiltration and activity of inflammatory cells when the drug/antigen is exposed to the interstitium of the kidney. Medications commonly associated with AIN include nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, diuretics, and proton pump inhibitors. Nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs are the most common, the most studied, and possibly the most avoidable drugs that cause AIN induced acute kidney injury. The mainstay of treatment of drug induced AIN is to discontinue treatment with the offending drug as soon as possible and restore and/or maintain intravascular volume with isotonic fluids to maintain renal perfusion. According to Roy Poland, in Culture and Customs of El Salvador, El Salvador was conquered by the Spanish in 1524; the spanish found the country was divided into three states (13). The spaniards hegemonic influence finally converted El Salvadorinto a Spanish colony after twenty six years of indigenous resistance(Poland 14). Such conquest brought violence, diseases, and poverty to the indigenous people. The invasion of El Salvador by the Spanish also resulted in mestizaje, racial mixing. The colonial period lasted until 1821(Poland 14). Frankl. Both of the authors took similar approaches by using narration of a main segment of their lives to explain their philosophy and how they arrived at their conclusions. Though both conclusions represent individualism they are strikingly different. His statement to man seeking a similar life, was: I would not have any one adopt my mode of living on any account; for, beside that before he has fairly learned it I may have found out another for myself, I desire that there may be as many different persons in the world as possible; but I would have each one be very careful to find out and pursue his own way, and not his father s or his mother s or his neighbor s instead. The youth may build or plant or sail, only let him not be hindered from doing that which he tells me he would like to do. It is by a mathematical point only that we are wise, as the sailor or the fugitive slave keeps the polestar in his eye; but that is sufficient guidance for all our life. That people gain wealth in personal experience and the beauty of Nature. Through self exploration and discovery they seek the truth and draw inner strength from it. • 21. Hydrological Alterations Due to Climate Change Water constitutes an indispensable component of climate system found in all parts of biosphere. Increased temperatures reported throughout the last century resulted in a number of hydrological alterations extending from modification of precipitation patterns, rapid snow and ice retreat, to changes in total runoff and increasing number of intensive or extreme events. These changes of climateassociated with the water availability show substantial spatial and temporal variability (Bates et al., 2008). In Europe, climate change has a strong north south gradient, imposing positive changes in the north and negative changes in the south in terms of rainfall and precipitation (Christensen and Christensen, 2007). Areas such as the Mediterranean basin are particularly vulnerable and projected to experience more frequent, long lasting and intensive drought events. Therefore as indicated by several studies annual river discharge is expected to decrease along with high seasonal flow variability (Alcamo et al., 2007; Arnell, 2004; Iglesias et al., 2011; Milly et al., 2005). Likewise with the general Mediterranean trend, Italy is exposed to progressive water scarcity as indicated by past observations and future projections. Over the last five decades precipitation was decreased by 14% along the country, while a further diminishing is the main projection of the IPCC scenarios towards the end of 2060. Under the A2 emission scenario 10% precipitation decrease is predicted for the north and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. John Winthrop s Vision Of A Prosperous Christian... The presence of religion is ingrained into the history of the United States of America. Serving as a haven for disgruntled religious rebels from the Old World, the colonies became embroiled into the question of Christian identity. John Winthrop envisioned that a Christian utopia would arise in the New World, convinced it would become reality as long as the inhabitants practiced Christianityin its proper form. Despite these high aspirations, future believers saw Winthrop s vision fall short. Cotton Mather believes that the Christian community fell victim to a sinful environment. Alternatively, preacher Jonathan Edwards believes that the self hinders a meaningful relationship with Christ. All men of great faith, they believed that indulgence in sinwould bring about ruin to their communities, and issued public warnings that advised fellow believers on how to save their souls, and by extension, their communities. Winthrop s vision of a prosperous Christian community was defined by several key characteristics, given by Winthrop himself. Winthrop states ...so this great King will have many stewards, counting Himself more honored in dispensing His gifts to man by man, than if He did it by His own immediate hands (166). Winthrop believes that it is the duty of the community to directly practice Christian doctrine and values. It is through this direct action that Godwill bring about prosperity to the population. The Yellow Press as defined in our book was a battle to sell more newspapers that pitted the New York World owned by Joseph Pulitzer and the New York Journal owned by William Randolph Hearst against one another (book p. Pulitzer and Hearst send reporters to Cuba. They sent back reports of Spanish cruelty some of which are factual and some that were not. These stories begin to rile the American people. However, in our defense, we did our best to Americanize the island nation by modernizing their infrastructure, education and medical treatment systems (book, p. 672). Good to Great is less of an examination of how good companies become great but more of an analysis of leadershipand social skills embraced by society s most successful through the lens of the business world. This is the book s greatest strength; by delivering concise information that can be utilized on the personal level, Collins is able to broadcast what would normally be considered mundane business talk by most in a fashion that is both interesting and actionable to the book s more than 4,000,000 buyers. Achieving best seller status, Good to Great aims to help individuals with a background in business, politics and other leadership backgrounds become best sellers, themselves, in their respective fields. By breaking down informational content into its simplest forms, providing ample evidence, repeatedly engaging in repetition, and by tag lining the most important themes and ideas, Collins hits the mark. Good to Great is methodical in its approach of conveying its information. This case had been previously heard by the Supreme Court resulting in a 7 1 decision that explained the University had no grounds to apply any preference to racial minorities in the application or the acceptance process. The case was reopened at both the fifth circuit court and the Supreme Court. There will be seven justices presiding over this case, with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Elena Kagan recusing herself. The question of making admission decisions on the basis of race had been debated before in the Supreme Court, in the case of Grutter v. Bollinger. The University of Michigan Law School had denied the admission of Barbara Grutter, a white female. The Law School admits that it uses race as a factor in making admissions decisions because it serves a compelling interest in achieving diversity among its student body. The court ruled in favor of the University of Michigan, because no single factor eliminated a certain applicant from being denied admission and race was seen as a factor that would help diversity in the law school. This case was referred to in the discussion phase of this hearing. In the case, the plaintiff accused UT at Austin of racially discriminating against her in the application and acceptance process. • 31. Deforestation In Rainforests Rich black soil, towering tropical trees, the distant sound of a hollering monkey and the smell of damp leaves paint the picture of a tropical rainforest. The most famous and valuable tropical forests include the Amazon, Congo Basin, Indonesia and the forests of the Russian Far East and have been debated as endangered for decades. These rainforests mainly differ in soils, geology, precipitation patterns, the wildlife which resides there but all share the abundance of natural wealth including sturdy woods, medicines and spices and are sought out by many. However the long debated question still stands if deforestationis something of the past or an on going and current threat. Deforestation is defined as the intentional or natural clearance of forests on a massive scale, often resulting in damage to the quality of the land and adverse environment effects. () Today forests still cover roughly 30% of the worlds land area however this number is sure to dwindle down due to the loss of 46 58 thousand square miles annually, equivalent to approximately 48 footballs fields every minute. (WWF) The decline in trees translates for loss of habitat and homes for the millions of exotic creatures which call rainforests for example the Amazon, home. The Amazon alone is home to more than two thirds of the 1.4 million species known to man however this is not even close to the extent of the wealth the drizzly rainforesthas to offer. (Rothbard, David and Craig Rucker) Species who s habitats are threatened by deforestation are often unable to prosper in the small forested acres left behind. Therefore species become vulnerable to trophy hunters or poachers causing numbers to begin to dwindle, some eventually succumbing to extinction. Even a lighter non commercial local deforestation can result in extinctions due to many unique species living in small isolated parts of the rainforests across the globe. (WWF) According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) affected species includes: giant pandas, tigers, rhinos, orangutans, Asian elephant, many species of apes like the gorilla and the Amur leopard (WWF). I have chosen drug courts more specifically to research. According to drugpolicy.org, in 2012 1.55 million people were arrested for non violent drug charges (Drug Policy Alliance). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Possibly one of the largest obstacles in creating problem solving courts is economical/political issues. With our nation in a recession many states are seeing budget cuts. The National Center for State Courts stated that as of 2011, a large number of state and local courts had experienced budget cuts of 15 to 20 percent since 2009 (Griller, 2011). The article also stated that despite the fact that these courts are cost effective in the long run, hard dollar cost per case figures are beginning to trump soft dollar crime reduction benefits (Griller, 2011). One idea to help problem solving courts make it through budget cuts is to have the court provide date periodically that shows evidence of rehabilitation, declining jail costs, and how this system is improving neighborhoods. The Seattle Municipal Court has done just this, and has managed to maintain funding to their problem solving courts while there have been budget cuts to the city government, as well as judicial position reductions (Griller, 2011). The rhyme scheme to these lines consist of AAABA giving the first, second, third, and fifth lines four pairs of stressed and unstressed syllables. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robert Wolff may argue that we have no obligation to obey the law because that would be in conflict with our duty to retain our moral autonomy. As such, no state has legitimate authority over its subjects. However, he is unable to convince me that I am obligated to act autonomously. I agree that I am existentially free and obligated to take responsibility for my own actions, but being fully autonomous is nothing but a fictional ideal. He states: The moral condition demands that we acknowledge responsibility and achieve autonomy wherever and whenever possible. I agree, but I maintain that living autonomously at all times is simply not possible in a world where we live with other people whose desires and freedoms are in competition with our own. I am positive that there is not one married individual in the world who can say with confidence that he or she is wholly autonomous. Therefore, I admit that I am not wholly autonomous and that the Canadian government has legitimate authority over me. An anarchic state, in which the state has no legitimate authority and therefore cannot enforce its laws, would lead to the war of all against all , as Hobbes eloquently puts it. However, while I don t believe that we are obligated to act autonomously at all times, I do believe that we are all entitled to self determination and that we have a moral obligation to look after the well being of our ... • 41. The Policy Of Appeasement During The Outbreak Of War Essay Evaluate the view that the policy of appeasement played a major role in the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939. After the mass amount of life lost in World War One, many countries, through the League of Nations, opted to prevent future conflict. Due to the failure collective security, the idea that countries could discourage aggression, appeasement became a policy adopted in the 1930s, especially by the British. Appeasement was developed in the belief that countries such as Germany were unfairly treated in the Treaty of Versailles. It was used in hope to prevent Germany and Italy going to war. Appeasement was seen to be magnanimous, good business, idealistic and a form of security. The policy of appeasement was widely pursued by Britain and France in the 1930s, refers to attempting to satisfy Germany s demands by negotiation and compromise in order to avoid another war. However due to its failure, the policy of appeasement, to a large extent was responsible for the outbreak of war in 1939. It is clear that if the Western Powers had retaliated against Hitler, war could have been avoided. Despite large extent the policy of appeasement in the outbreak of war it is superseded by other factors as well. The policy of appeasement allowed for some of Hitler s goal of Lebensraum, many factors causing the outbreak of War in Europe. Hitler ordered German rearmament in October 1933. • 42. Analysis Of I Was A Puerto Rican, By Esmeralda Santiago Question 1 Foreshadowing I push my cart away, toward the apples and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness predictable and bittersweet. This quote, and entire prologue, are taken from the memoir When I was a Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago and they foreshadow that her whole life is changed, just like the fruit she eats and that are in her life. Santiago life is totally turned around in this memoir and the prologue shows that. The author weaves foreshadowing into the memoir by showing us how her life changed dramatically and once she came to the United States everything was different, just like fruit here in the United States and in Puerto Rico. The author uses the technique of foreshadowing to give something to look forward to in her story and build suspense and anticipation. Santiago used foreshadowing to show that her life changed and that it changed a lot. Her life is foreshadowed that it will change and that she lets her past go. Leaving her past in the past and moving on with her present and future. Santiago s life was horrible growing up. Her parents did not always get along, their home was not always safe, clean, and good for her and her family, they were always moving, etc. After they moved to New York, a couple years later, her life was changed. She was offered an acting role and then later on went to Harvard with a scholarship. As you can see, she left her past in the past and went on with her amazing new life. When I was a Puerto ... A quick SWOT analysis reveals the key strengths and opportunities that make Sugar Bowl a viable business in the long term. The company s key strengths are Shelby Givens as its strategic leader and Charlie Campbell as its private event sales person. Both individuals are crucial intangible resources that help Sugar Bowl achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Givens s obtained valuable knowledge about marketing from the general manager that runs a successful bowling venue in Washington, D.C. In addition, she managed to find methods to increase revenue by keeping costs down. For example, she was able to increase average customer spending to $50 by narrowing down the menu, re negotiating the company s catering contract, and increasing the prices of the best selling plates (2012, p. 8). In like manner, Charlie Campbell was able to quickly line up a potential of $35,000 in revenue in his first months working with the company. Only 6 minutes after his initial statement did the third attack occur, and it was on the Pentagon. Hijackers crashed Flight 77, the third plane, into the western side of the Pentagon, killing 59 on board and 125 people inside the building. Consequently, the FAA grounds all flights over or bound for the United States, and sends thousands of commercial flights and private planes to airports in Canada and the U.S. Additionally, the White House, Capitol, and other high profile places are evacuated as well, in case of another attack. Now the fate of every sliver of good magic Walt Disney ever dreamed up rests on me me and the team, I should say. I suppose it all started, that everything changed at midnight. I had just gone to sleep after a long day of homework when I woke up, not in my bed, but right down the middle of Main Street USA . I was standing at the flagpole facing the magnificent Cinderella Castle. I had to stop and think a second. How was I in Disney World? Why was it so deserted? It was practically a ghost town here in the wee hours of night. Then I turned and saw a boy sitting on the bench. I was certainly taken aback by the appearance of someone else. He motioned toward me and as I came closer, I soon recognized him. It was that smart British kid who could do things with a computer most adults wouldn t understand. It was Dell Philby. So you re the extra, aren t you? he said as I approached the bench. Extra what? I stuttered, still perplexed by this whole situation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 47. Ancient Jews And Their Belief Of God Ancient Jews and their Belief in God(s) Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have maintained their customs and religion. One of the most common assumptions has been that the ancient Jews have always been monotheistic. Yet, upon closer examination, this conventional wisdom is inaccurate. Ugaritic texts, archeological data, and the Biblical narrative itself all demonstrate that the ancient Jews were not monotheistic, contrary to what many believe. In fact, there is proof that they acknowledged and sometimes worshipped other gods, as late as the seventh century CE. In order to grasp what this means, there needs to be an understanding of who the ancient Jews were, who their neighbors were, and what was worshipped at the time. To understand what the ancient Jews believed in, we first must define who these ancient Jews were. The first mention of ancient Jews in history is in the year 1207 BCE. In the book, Ancient Inscriptions: Voices from the Biblical World, an Egyptian King Merneptah tries to conquer many lands through his campaign to achieve greatness. He writes about his conquests and mentions Israel by saying, Israel is laid to waste, his seed is no more. Ronald Hendel, a Biblical scholar, cites this verse in his article, Israel among the Nations, and we begin to see mention of the Jewish people in history. Up until this point, there is no historical proof that a separate nation of Israel existed. This verse gives us evidence of the coexistence of Israel and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Role Of Gladiatorial Sports In Roman Times Matthew Melnychuk4/28/16 Latin Ms.CellaPeriod 3 Sports During The Roman Time Period During the Roman Times from (31 BCE to 476 CE) sports were both things that many did in their daily life and as well as Roman Fighting games. Not all Roman games were violent and played by men. Many Roman kids would swim, ride horses, hunt and fish, play board games during their leisure time. Sports were very important to the Romans because some had a religious meaning to them. Gladiatorial games in Ancient Rome and modern sports have more in common than some would think. Violence has been a key component to the success of each of these games. Many spectators watched as the Coliseum was filled with blood from brutal gladiatorial matches. These days, hundreds of people watch two men fight in a boxing ring. After thinking about gladiatorial games and looking at modern sports see similarities between the two. The Romans believed that they inherited the practice of gladiatorial games from the Etruscans who used them as part of a funeral ritual. The first gladiatorial games were offered in Rome in 264 BCE by sons of Junius Brutus Pera in their father s honor.
