What we’ve learnt so far
Roisin, Libby & Soffia
A2 course
• For the beginning of our A2 course, we have
created a film review show for the movie
‘Pride’. To do this, we have made use of the
Macs and Garage Band, giving us experience
and knowledge to build on next year when we
create our documentaries.
Representation and Mediation
• Representation is the constructed and
mediated presentation of people, things,
ideas, places etc. It is also the process by
which the media presents the ‘real world’
(Rayner).
• Mediation is how we as the public do not see
anything true in the media, as it is all altered
to be shown how the creator intends it to be
shown.
When analysing representation, you need to answer these questions:
• Who or what is being represented?
• How is the representation created?
• Why are they being represented in that way? What is the intention?
• What is the effect of the representation?
• Owen Jones: “During the 1980’s, we saw a dramatic assault on all
aspects of working class life, on unions, council houses,
communities and therefore working class pride.”
• “It’s been replaced by middle class pride and the working classes
have cone to be seen as something to escape from.”
• Audience Theory – How a person reads a piece of
media based on their experiences
• Reception Theory – When a producer constructs
a text that is encoded with a meaning or message
that they wish to convey to the audience.
• Passive audience- a show where the audience
accepts all messages in the media text and has no
say over what happens in the show e.g. ordinary
shows such as soaps.
• Active audience- a show where the audience can
interact with the programme, telling opinions or
changing events possibly through tweets/ votes
on shows such as xfactor or this morning.
Pride – Working Class
• Groups of people that are represented:
Lesbians, Gays, Miners, Working class
• Director: Matthew Warchus
• Script Writer: Stephen Beresford
• The script writer and director are from the
south, we can assume that they are not
working class.
Codes and Conventions of a film
review show
• Film critics usually give personal opinions
• There is usually a focus on the actors, mainly big name stars
that are featured in the film
• They usually give a brief synopsis of the film
• They use recognizable intro and outro music
• They use clips from the film
• They mention the name of the show, to help people to
recognize it in the future
• There is usually one presenter and one expert
• Between the presenter and expert, there is usually a Q&A
• They use clips from the film to support the experts opinion
Garage Band
• To begin with we recorded ourselves reading our script on the film pride
in an interview structure.
• We then uploaded it from the recorder on to our home area and from
there we dragged it over to garage band.
• We turned of the metronome to ensure our background had no additional
sounds. We adjusted the volume to make sure our voices were the loudest
sound that would be on our radio show.
• We chose a track to place at the beginning and end of our interview, we
chose one which we felt best suited a radio show. We faded it out as we
started talking and faded it back in as we stopped.
• We cut clips from the film to support certain points we were saying in the
show. We cut parts of us talking so tat we could insert the clips from the
film. This created a smooth flowing radio show.
• To finish off we listened to the whole clip throughout to make sure
everything ran smoothly and there were no mistakes.
