What makes a good
image – Part 2
Effects and aspects of photographs
Effective Lighting
 The lighting can definitely define a photo and
can effect the final look of a photograph, and
without it being taken to mind, can ruin or
decrease the performance of a photo.
Professional lighting is extremely effective,
especially for prints for magazines and other
media, as it has to look professional, so that
people will find interest in it. Silhouettes,
shadows and rays of light are also popular.
High key lighting would definitely be essential
for professional photos. Along with using
colour to enhance the effect of a photo, like
on the image shown.
 This would definitely be effective for the
images that could be shown in my magazine,
as it would allow them to look professional
and give a good image of the magazine
itself. It could also add to the design and
colour scheme of the print which would also
increase the professionalism.
Facial Expression Theory
 The facial expression theory can support the
fact that using facial expressions in
photography or material that would be
shown in media, can give off an emotion of
the artist/model and the source it is coming
from, and then also give a personal emotion
to the viewer. This could be used in
magazine photography to support the
subject of the article or style of the artist. On
this magazine cover that is shown, the artist
Chris Browns’ facial expression is quite odd
in a way. The fact that he is not smiling but
almost pouting and tilts his head could be a
way of trying to look ‘grown up’ and ‘hip’ ,
which conveniently links to the article name
which gives an idea that spread will be
about Chris Brown’s new style and how he
has grown up or changed, which is also
indicated through his facial expression.
 I could definitely use facial expression within
the photography of my magazine as it is an
excellent way to express the music genre
and article subject, and to also give an
image of the person I am writing about.
Effective Positioning
 Positioning within images can be
extremely effective as it allows
creativity to be presented within the
photos, which could also add
personality. It is a unique way to
express a photo and is different to
just simply having a picture of a
model/artist just standing normally.
In the picture shown the artist, Justin
Bieber, is sitting on a chair and
leaning his feet on a keyboard
surrounded with musical objects.
This reflects his lifestyle and career
and the dominance of his music,
which is effective to visualize.
 This would also be significant to use
in my work as it is different, unique
and effective to use various
positions to reflect subjects or
themes within the article or
magazine that could be shown
through imagery.
The Rule Of Thirds
 The rule of thirds states than an
image is most pleasing and
satisfying when its regions are
composed along imaginary lines of
such which divide the image into
thirds — both vertically and
horizontally. This would be
important in photography to get the
most accurate and professional
photo possible and to look
impressive to viewers
 I could potentially use this within
my photos and it would allow me to
have definite accuracy. However, I
wouldn’t count this as the most
important factor to think about
during taking my photos, however it
is still a significant issue that could
help me find out how to pick my
best photos.
