2. Film Distribution
Distributing a film is the act of making it available for viewing by an audience. A
film distributor usually creates a marketing campaign for a movie and decides
where and when it is going to be released as well as the exhibition platforms it will
be on. Most Hollywood films are distributed by the “Big 6” because they can get
films into cinemas all over the world and can make it available on DVD, Blu-ray,
digital download, streaming sites and many more exhibition platforms. However
independent filmmakers cannot distribute like this, they have to rely heavily on
Web 2.0 and independent companies.
3. Distribution and Web 2.0 for independent filmmakers
Web 2.0 is very useful to filmmakers because it provides new ways to fund,
advertise and distribute film. In recent years crowdfunding websites such as
Kickstarter have been helping people to create their own films by being funded by
people interested in the product, these people usually get rewarded with a ticket to
see the film or a DVD copy. Social media has had a massive impact on
advertising for films because it is completely free and can be seen by anyone.
Websites such as Vimeo and Youtube have allowed people to upload their
projects online so people can enjoy their films
4. How we used Web 2.0
We created a twitter page for our film and used it to connect with our audience.
We created polls to see what our target audience liked and released posters as
well as pictures of us filming to the page to create excitement among our
audience. We used Youtube to upload our film because of the large audience we
could reach and so far we have received a lot of good feedback. For our next
project we are considering using crowdfunding as we now have a small fan base
that might be interested in pledging some money into our new film.
5. How we plan to further distribute
At the moment we are trying to get our film into Leeds International Film Festival,
they usually showcase projects from young and talented filmmakers. We feel that
this would help to further gain an audience for our film and might even catch the
eye of a distribution company who could help us make DVD copies or get the film
shown in cinemas. We asked some local independent cinemas to screen our film
so we could get some extra audience feedback.
