Introduction of Yoga
Yoga is a philosophy which was first developed in India, in which physical exercises
and meditation are believed to help people become calmer and united in spirit with
god. Yoga is a type of exercise in which you move your body into various positions in
order to become more fit or flexible, to improve your breathing and to relax your
mind. The word ‘yoga’ originates from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ meaning to add,
combine or unite. In yoga it means the union of the soul with the divine. The word
yoga is the attainment of that ultimate goal when the soul meets the divine, just as
the river current meets the ocean. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures,
breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation.
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a traditional method of meditation developed
by the saints of ancient India. They practiced yoga as an
effective method of controlling their and bodily
activities. Yoga in daily life is a system of practice
consisting of eight levels of development in the areas of
physical, mental, social and spiritual health.
When the body is physically healthy, the mind is clear,
focused and stress is under control. This gives the
space to connect with loved ones and maintain socially
healthy relationships. When you are healthy you are in
touch with your inner self, with others and your
surroundings on a much deeper level, which adds to
your spiritual health.
Importance & Benefits of Yoga
Importance of Yoga
Yoga exercises recharge the body with cosmic energy and
facilitate:-
 Attainment of perfect equilibrium and harmony
Promotes self-healing
Removes negative blocks from the mind and toxins
from the body
Enhances personal power
Increases self-awareness
Helps in attention, focus and concentration, especially
important for children
Reduces stress and tension in the physical body by
activating the parasympathetic nervous system

Benefits of Yoga
Yoga improves flexibility:- Yoga offers many styles to choose from
varying in intensity from high to moderate to mild.
Yoga helps with stress relief:- It makes that the second most cited
reason people selected as to why they do yoga was to relieve stress,
especially asana, is excellent at reducing stress.
Yoga improves mental health:- Both movement based yoga
therapies and breathing based practices have been shown to
significantly improve depressive symptoms.
Yoga may reduce inflammation:- Yoga of various styles,
intensities, and durations reduced the biochemical markers of
inflammation across several chronic conditions.
Yoga will likely increase your strength:- While most people
associate yoga with stretching and flexibility, some types of yoga
classes can also be considered strength-building.
Yoga may reduce anxiety:- Numerous studies suggest that yoga
asana may be effective as an alternative treatment for anxiety
disorders, though several of the researchers request additional
replicated studies before conclusively stating as much.
Yoga may boost immunity:- When your immunity is compromised,
you’re more susceptible to illness. However, yoga is considered a
scientifically backed alternative treatment for stress.
Yoga can improve balance:- Yoga has been shown to improve
balance and overall performance in athletes. Yoga asana can also be
helpful at improving balance in people with brain injuries.
Yoga may improve cardiovascular functioning:- The research
indicates that yogic breathing may actually influence the brain’s cardio
respiratory centre to improve functioning.
Yoga may improve self-esteem:- Several recent studies shows
positive results when using yoga for improving self-esteem and
perceived body image.
Yoga may improve bone health:- Many postures in yoga are
isometric contractions., meaning the length of the muscles holding
the pose doesn’t change , though they are fully engaged.
Yoga can promote better posture and body awareness:- Yoga’s
focus on mobility and flexibility can contribute to better alignment by
releasing muscles that are often tight, such as the hamstrings and
improving mobility of the spine.
