“ What is the Purpose of

    Higher Education ”
“ Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to
          change the world
                Nelson Mandela
                                 ”
Now, I am going to talk about and the
 cultural differences and similarities
  between these two great countries
Higher Education in Kuwait

• There are four state-supported higher
    education institutions in Kuwait.

 1. Kuwait University
 2. The College of Basic Education in PAAET
 3. Higher Institute for Theater Arts
 4. Higher Institute of Music Arts
Private Post-secondary Colleges

 • In addition, there are a number of private post-
secondary colleges and universities that are approved
by the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education:
  • Gulf University for Sciences and Technology.
          • Australian College of Kuwait.
         • American University of Kuwait.
             • Gulf American College.
           • Maastricht School for MBA.
            • Box-Hill College for Girls.
Higher education in Kuwait
• In the academic year 2005/06, the total
  enrollment within these institutions
reached 27,308, an increase of 7 percent
  from the previous year

• The proportion of females in the
  undergraduate studies is 70 percent.
In KUWAIT educational policy seeks
       to provide opportunity to
           ALL CHILDREN,
irrespective of their social class. So is
               in USA
There is Co-Education in Kuwait like in USA
Higher education in the United States

• Higher education in the United States includes a
variety of institutions of higher education
• According to the Shanghai Jiao Tong
  University's Academic Ranking of World
Universities, more than 30 of the highest-ranked
45 institutions are in the United States (as
measured by awards and research output)
Bureau of Statistics
• As of 2010, the US had 20.3 million students
in higher education, roughly 5.7% of the total
  population
• The 2006 American Community
Survey conducted by the United States
  Census Bureau found that
  – 19.5 percent of the population had attended
    college but had no degree
  – 7.4 percent held an associate's degree
  – 17.1 percent held a bachelor's degree
  – 9.9 percent held a graduate or professional
    degree
Bureau of Statistics

 • However, in USA despite increasing
economic incentives for people to obtain
college degrees, the percentage of people
graduating from high school and college
has been declining as of 2008
“   Coming together is a beginning;
     keeping together is progress;

                                 ”
     working together is success.
               Henry Ford
THE PURPOSE OF HIGHER
EDUCATION…
College graduates
 have the potential
 for greater annual
and lifetime earnings
  than high school
   graduates, and
   those financial
  benefits tend to
 increase over time.
To educate leaders in our
      democracy

              Thomas Jefferson
              famously wanted the
United States to be led by
              a “natural aristocracy” of
              “virtue and talent” rather
              than an “artificial
              aristocracy” based on
              wealth and birth
Voting is very important for a
 democracy’s political life, and
   college graduates seem to
understand that better than high
school grads. College graduates
     are more likely to vote
Higher learning helps strengthen
          communities
The Goal of Higher Education is to
     Produce Good Citizens
To Understand the World

As Louis Menand has written in
The New Yorker magazine, college is a
time for you to learn “things about the
world and yourself that, if you do not
learn them in college, you are unlikely
        to learn anywhere else.”
When students experience Higher
Education, they have the opportunity to
read books and listen to the lectures of
top experts in their fields. This
  stimulation encourages students to
think, ask questions, and explore new
   ideas, which allows for additional
        growth and development
My husband did not go to college. He works for
SEPTA [the local transit authority] and he has
advanced in salary and promotions along the
way, but he has always said he would have
made so much more money if he did have his
               college degree.

                    -- Woman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

http://www.highereducation.org/reports/expectations/expectations5.shtml
“ Today you don't even question whether
you are going to college. It's the sign of
the times. When I was growing up what
was important was to make the home
front, with marriage and children, but

                                 ”
                    today it is
                  College.
Thank You
