More and more people live their lives online, and we are encouraged to view the internet as a public space. However the personal data we bring to this space can be used in many inappropriate ways: Instagram stories are scraped to target advertisement; faces in family photographs are used to train the ML systems that will scan crowds for suspects; the devices we thought we owned end up owning us; and our browsing histories are stored and scanned by governments and private companies. This creates a tension for public service organisations as they try to deliver value to audiences and users online.
In this session experts from the BBC Research & Development, Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE, and PublicSpaces will consider how to resolve these tensions, and look at some specific interventions aimed at providing value to audiences and communities through the responsible use of private data in online public spaces.

AI-SDV 2020: AI, IoT, Blockchain & Co: How to keep track and take advantage o...Dr. Haxel Consult
The presentation first addresses 6 key questions: Where do we stand with the diversification of AI? Machines are getting better at understanding - where are we with writing? Has AI Research hit a wall in 2020? What's the progress made in AI ethics? Could synthetically created data make AI cheaper? And: Are deep fake deployments of AI becoming more insidious? The presentation then moves on to discuss the 4th generation of AI: Artificial Intuition. It discusses the lines of effort in AI of the US Government and concludes with three actualities on AI-based decision making, COVID-loneliness detection and extrapolation of AI into the long run.
My slides from IoT conference Athens 2017 keynote presentation, discussing the common problems with enterprise IoT projects / digital transformation and key failure points: Waterfall vs Agile methodology and open source vs closed approach/technologies. Also presenting an example agile approach of a multi-tenant IoT Solution for a Refrigerator Manufacturer.

By 2020 there will be 200 billion connected devices. Like it or not, there will be more IoT gadgets than mobile devices. As designers how are we evolving to this rapid growth of the devices? Though AI is getting ready to disrupt the job market. IoT and other future technologies are opening new opportunities for us, as designers.
In this keynote presentation, we look at what the notion of an industrial Web of Things could mean. Looking at the evolution of the Web in general, we argue that a key aspect is the application of proven development engineering methods. We look at the notions of continuous delivery, infrastructure as code and testing from a physical web point of view.

Data are driving the world today and they are becoming world's precious currency. Continuous Engineering, the default set of applications for enterprise software development, produce a wealth of data but it is hard to understand its value. Decision points for when to implement automatic indexing or more intensive subject analysis
Machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to automatic indexing and other aspects of content enrichment have tremendous potential, but there are significant barriers to successful implementations. The economics of these systems are not now generally affordable, which will indefinitely delay widespread adoption. Significant costs are involved in just the training and maintaining systems that chronically under perform and are fail to scale. Cost and performance data will be characterized and presented. Machine learning and artificial intelligence projects are not for the faint of heart, nor for those with small budgets. Key cost elements are identified along with approaches to estimating costs based on actual and reported cases.

Living Room of the Future workshop for the xR Madrid fest 2019
This workshop will be given by Ian Forrester , producer for the R & D area of the BBC. It will offer an overview of the future of immersive technologies and how they will allow greater interaction with their users.
Through the project ' Perceptive podcast Project' , Forrester will explain how the internet of things will revolutionize both the content and the services of an international company such as BBC. It will explain to us how these perceptual technologies analyze in real time through sensors and user data the reaction to content and how they coexist with the necessary protection of each other's privacy. It will also detail the research on the ' Living Room of the Future ' project, to understand the impact that the living room of the future can have with its hyper-personalized contents and its multisensory surfaces from the wall to the dining room table.

User Innovation for the Internet of Things | Gerd KortuemGerd Kortuem
The importance of user innovation is widely accepted, but the development of the Internet of Things is primarily driven by large commercial players. Using an innovation perspective, this paper identifies how user innovation and market-based innovation can be combined by creating user- centered ecosystems that are open for and provide incentives for end-user innovation. An investigation of the smart-home domain is used to identify challenges for the realization of user-centered ecosystems for the Internet of Things.

Adaptive podcasting is a dynamic approach to storytelling through audio productions that are tailored to the preferences and needs of audiences. It is a powerful way to connect with your audience on a deeper level by telling experiential stories adapted to their situation at the moment of listening, using mobile sensory data. Moreover, adaptive podcasting can make podcasts more accessible, as they can be adjusted to the needs of the listener, for instance by adjusting to their level of hearing all without sharing personal data.

Adaptive podcasting - the future of personalised podcast experiences
Imagine if the stories you listen to could adapt to your surroundings. To the time of day you’re listening to them, whether it’s light or dark outside; or if they could stretch or contract in length to fit with how long you’ve got to listen. That’s exactly what podcast listeners can experience with adaptive podcasting, a new podcast format that enables producers to make parts of their audio flexible - personalised to each listener, using data from listeners’ devices.
