What is the difference between a semi-permeable and selectively permeable membrane?
A.) How does this apply to osmosis, diffusion, faciliatated diffusion, and active transport
Solution
Semi-permeable membrane acts as correct partition between two osmotically active solutions or
between a solution and its solvent. This membrane allows only solvent to pass through. In
general, the movement is based on the concentration differences between the two solutions, i.e,
the concentration gradient between the two solutions decides the movement under normal
conditions (when no force is applied on either side).this type of membrane is used in dialysis
maintenance. Example: egg membrane, paper, potato experiment.
Selectively permeable membrane, as the name indicates chooses the particle to pass through it.
Both solutes and solvents can pass through it. Many cell membranes such as cell membrane
(plasmalemma) and tonoplast are selectively permeable. Selectively permeable membrane wont
allow other than the selected molecules.

What is the difference between a semi-permeable and selectively perm.pdf

  • 1. What is the difference between a semi-permeable and selectively permeable membrane? A.) How does this apply to osmosis, diffusion, faciliatated diffusion, and active transport Solution Semi-permeable membrane acts as correct partition between two osmotically active solutions or between a solution and its solvent. This membrane allows only solvent to pass through. In general, the movement is based on the concentration differences between the two solutions, i.e, the concentration gradient between the two solutions decides the movement under normal conditions (when no force is applied on either side).this type of membrane is used in dialysis maintenance. Example: egg membrane, paper, potato experiment. Selectively permeable membrane, as the name indicates chooses the particle to pass through it. Both solutes and solvents can pass through it. Many cell membranes such as cell membrane (plasmalemma) and tonoplast are selectively permeable. Selectively permeable membrane wont allow other than the selected molecules.
