What’s the Difference? Here are the  dictionary definitions: Fiction —  a)   something invented by the imagination ; specifically : an invented story  b)  fictitious literature (as novels or short stories) . Nonfiction —  literature or cinema that is  not fictional
Nonfiction is the Real Deal All forms of nonfiction concern  REAL  —  not   creative or the imaginary   — subject matter. Nonfiction is writing or speaking about the  REAL WORLD .
Nonfiction is the Real Deal In other words... Non fiction  is  NOT  fiction! (It’s not imaginary or “made up.”) It’s about  real   people  and  real  events .
Three Types  of Nonfiction There are  two types  of nonfiction — Narrative  nonfiction Tells a true-to-life story Informative  nonfiction Explains a topic or presents an opinion Persuasive  nonfiction Encourages the reader to  believe  or  do  something
Narrative   Nonfiction Narrative nonfiction  tells a story . (Fiction (short stories & novels) also tells a story — but  narrative nonfiction stories are true. ) Both use the same  story elements : Setting Characters Plot Conflict Theme
Narrative   Nonfiction In other words… Narrative nonfiction  offers the same story appeal as fiction  (made-up, imaginative stories) The  important difference  is this: Narrative nonfiction stories are a  true-to-life retelling of events  that actually happened .
Narrative   Nonfiction Have you ever read: an Autobiography  ? A writer tells his/her life story   from the first-person point of view (I, me) a Memoir   ? A writer tells a story from a specific period of his/her life , also from first-person POV a Biography   ? A  writer tells someone else’s story  from the third-person point of view (he, she) a Narrative Essay   ? A writer relates a true story in a short composition  (first-person or third-person POV)

Informative Nonfiction Format LEAD  — Captures the readers’ attention, and Includes a  thesis , A statement of the essay’s  main idea . BODY  — Develops the main idea with  supporting details … Facts, reasons, quotations, statistics, examples, observations, personal experiences, etc. CONCLUSION  — Restates the main idea and/or Summarizes the main points Leaves the reader with something to think about (Persuasive essays often end with a call to action.)
Persuasive   Nonfiction  Persuasive Writing Encourages the reader to  believe  or  do  something Common Persuasive Writings include: Editorials Travel Brochures Advertisements Petitions And many more!
