The mouse is a hand-held pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface and translates that motion into movement of a pointer on the display. It was invented in 1946 as part of a radar system and allows smooth control of a computer's graphical user interface. A mouse controls pointer motion in two dimensions and turns hand movements forward, back, left, and right into signals that move the pointer. Common gestures include single clicking the main button, double clicking for a different action, and right clicking to open context menus.
