The mouse is a pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to its surface. It originated at Stanford Research Institute and gets its name from resembling a mouse tail due to its cord. The first mouse was a trackball invented in 1952, while the first true mouse with a cord came later as a wooden device. Modern optical mice use sensors and image processing to track motion across surfaces. The mouse allows users to precisely interact with graphical user interfaces on computer monitors and makes everyday computer use easier compared to only using keys.
