A female cottontail, or doe, can have her first litter after only a year of age, and she can have up
to four litters a year. This means that by the time a doe is caring for her last litter of the season,
offspring from her first litter may be tending to their own babies. While cottontail litters are
relatively large, consisting of three to eight young, a sparse number will survive to adulthood.
Many are lost to predators such as dogs and cats. Others die from a flaw in nest building. The
way a mother doe builds a nest makes it very susceptible to filling with water. Entire litters are
lost when this happens, as the blind, deaf, and furless baby rabbits drown in their own refuge.
Even when cottontails do survive long enough to leave the nest, many are killed within their first

providing water for everyone, but also with its impact on the environment. Most well developed

to work with children, and psychology seemed a good field. In 1934, Mamie Clark graduated
magna cum laude from Howard University, Mamie then immediately enrolled in the psychology
graduate program. In 1939 Mamie was studying African American children that were in segregated
nursery schools as a topic for her project. Her master s thesis was, The Development of
Consciousness of Self in Negro Pre School Children, and that started the beginning of a line of
research that later became historic when it was used to help make racial segregation
unconstitutional in American public schools. Her thesis concluded that the children became aware
of their blackness early on in their childhood. She used pictures of both white and black boys with
numerous animals and a clown. She concluded that the children did not self identify with the
different images, and it was this conclusion that later became the foundation
