What Are The Continents Coastlines Once Connected
Have you ever thought of the idea that the continents were once connected? Scientists believe that
around 300 million years ago the seven continents we know today were once connected to each
other to form one massive continent called Pangea. There is a lot of evidence that supports this idea.
First of all, some continents have coastlines that would fit together like puzzle pieces. Secondly,
there have been almost identical fossils found on different continents separated by miles of ocean.
Lastly, similar glacier deposits are on four different continents. There is evidence that the shape of
the continents coastlines were once connected. In Figure one I see that some continents coastlines
look like they would fit together perfectly. It is almost like they are puzzle pieces. A good example
of this would be the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa. I can
imagine these pieces of land sliding together perfectly. Another example is, Australia's southern
coastline rotated to Africa's southeast coastline is. The shape of the continents coastlines is evidence
that all of the continents were connected at some point because the coastlines could fit together.
There is fossil evidence that shows the continents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Figure three, I see that the southern sections of South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia all
have similar glacier deposits from the Permian period. If the continents were where they are now
when the glaciers were present, they would have come from the ocean. Since glaciers can only form
over land and in very cold climates that would have been nearly impossible. My explanation for
finding similar glacier deposits on different continents is they must have been connected and had a
very cold climate. The similar glacier deposits found on different continents is evidence that the
continents were once connected because of the elements glaciers need to

California Coast Case Study
AUDIENCE Problem? Solution? So What? Audience 1: Scientists / Environmental Professionals
Land–use change will likely pose a greater threat to biodiversity than climate change in this century.
For the California Coastline, poorly planned extensive development will likely result in land use
changes that will further fragment the coastline, posing a direct threat to continued conservation. In
a recent spatial analysis, the California coast ecoregions had the lowest percentage of formally
protected land and ranked highest in the conversion threat index (CTI). Continued conservation of
the California Coast, involves preservation of areas that are not currently developed. The California
Coastal Commission (CCC) currently has jurisdiction over the ... Show more content on

You're tucking your hood into your wetsuit, and a security officer tells you can no longer enter the
water at this point, because it is a private beach. Is this a forthcoming reality? Unfortunately, it may
become a reality if the California Coastal Commission (CCC) fails to fight development the way it
has in the past. Recently, Charles Lester, a longtime advocate against development and historic
guardian of the California coastline was fired from his position as the Executive Director at the
CCC, on grounds that he was not doing a good job of balancing development needs with coastal
preservation. Prior to his dismissal, the social media newsfeeds of surfers and ocean lovers alike
was inundated with the news. Thousands made the pilgrimage to Morro Bay, to support Lester.
Despite efforts, Lester was fired and the news faded–the coast could now become developed in
areas where it never was before. While the firing of Charles Lester is over, ocean–lovers, surfers,
and beach lovers alike cannot just let the new CCC have its way. We cannot let the bottomless
pockets of developers speak too loudly to CCC members. We have to speak just as loudly, and
remain aware of the actions taking place in our local areas. Write to your representatives; join action
organizations such as Surfrider, if you have not already. Be aware of the events

The Ocean's Timeline
Before there were good ships, many of the people who were on voyages died on the ocean. Our high
tech ships of today aren't able to withstand its crushing power. It is one of most powerful natural
features on earth. The ocean has many interesting characteristics. Below the water is like another
world. We call these features the ocean profile. The ocean's coastline also has many interesting
qualities. The ocean profile is like the underwater geography of the ocean. The eight main features
are the shoreline, continental shelf, continental slope, trench, Guyot, abyssal plain, ridges, and the
rift. The edge of the ocean where it meets the land is called the shoreline. The part of the continental
land that is underwater is called the continental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sea cliffs, beaches, river valleys, bays, sandbars, sea stacks, and sea arches are examples of
coastline features. Sea cliffs are high walls of rock. They are formed when erosion from the waves
takes place on a raised piece of land forming a sharp drop off in the land. Beaches are the portion of
land that is the area between low and high tide. Many beaches are made of millions of tiny quartz
particles called sand. River valleys is a stream that erodes itself into the land forming a valley. River
valleys are an important source of sediments going to the sea. A bay is a broad inlet of the sea where
a sandbar partly encloses it from the sea. A sandbar is a thin piece of land which curves toward the
land usually enclosing a bay. Sometimes sandbars are made of sediments carried by the waves. Sea
stacks are tall narrow rocks along the seacoast. Sometimes sea cliffs can be eroded by waves into a
large arch made of rock. Like the ocean itself, the coastline is full of beautiful qualities. The ocean
profile is full of features like underwater mountains, cliffs, valleys, volcanoes, and plains. The
coastline, which is a feature of the ocean profile, is full of beauty and variety. Erosion helps in the
formation of both ocean profile and the coastline. Without erosion they would not

Adelaide's Beaches Analysis
The coast is the buffer between terrestrial land and the marine, it is the boundary of where land
meets water which is known as the coastline. Tides, waves and currents are what help form
coastlines. However, when waves meet or crash on the shore, they erode the land, leaving behind
tiny parts of the sea such as shells, seaweed and marine life. Although, over the past 30 years central
beaches are continually eroding because sand is pushed along the coast by waves. (BAC Australia,
n.d) Coastlines are badly affected by erosion and The Coast Protection Board is urgently needed to
protect and manage Adelaide's beaches. Without them managing the beaches, several of Adelaide's
southern metropolitan beaches will be left with very little sand on them. ... Show more content on

Geological history has ancient records of Australia being connected to Antarctica land mass, being
apart of Gondwanaland. This mass of land was mainly above sea level, which began to change due
to the tertiary period because of extreme climates and erosion. Australia was separated from
Gondwanaland approximately 55 million years ago. (Department for environmental heritage and
Aboriginal Affairs, n.d) The separation of the continents occurred along the continent that is now
known as the southern boundary. (ibid) The what seems like simple separation of land caused huge
movements and resurfaced a lot of land. For example, the St Vincent basin which is located
north/south of Australia was dramatically changed and formed step–able rocks, and the Adelaide
hills were also formed. Sea levels were also dramatically sunken 120 meters below the average level
than what sea levels show today. In the 21st century the movements still exist and happen daily,
however, that are at a very slow rate.

Graduation Speech At Utah Valley University
Ever since I could remember my parents told me that college was key to being successful in life, if
you didn 't attend a good college your life was most likely not going to be a very happy one. This
message stay throughout my life , education was of great importance and college was the key factor
of where you ended up in life. High school counselors, teachers, parents, and mentors all
emphasized that the better the college you attend the more opportunities you 'll have. Being a high
school senior and having to think seriously about the future now, I applied for many schools and
landed at Utah Valley University, a great feeder school for Brigham Young University. I attended
Utah Valley University for 1 semester and I really enjoyed many aspects of going to a university but
decided to go back home to orange county and attend a community college instead, Coastline
Community College. I have so far been enrolled at coastline for about a month and can see the
likenesses and the differences between the university life and the community college life. I can see
no college is alike, and that doesn 't mean one college is better than another. It took transferring to a
community college to see that not even a university is better than a community college.
Utah Valley University and Coastline Community College, weren 't the same type of school but
actually had quite a bit of similarities. For instance, both Utah Valley and Coastline are well known

Physical And Human Elements Of Coastal Zone Environment
Describe the interaction of physical and human elements of coastal zone environment and discuss
the different strategic response of individuals, groups and government bodies to the issue of coastal
management. The interaction between the physical and human elements of the coastal environment
has had a considerable effect on the various coastal zones in Australia and specific strategic events
responses of individuals, groups and governments. Australia has over 37 000 kilometres of
coastline, 11 000 beaches and thousands of coastal landforms. Approximately 85% of Australia's
population live within 50 km of the coast. The coast is where the ocean meets the land and the
coastal zone comprises of many different environments including rivers, bays, wetlands, beaches,
coral reefs, estuaries and the continental shelf. Due to rapid urbanisation and development and other
human and physical processes such as erosion Australia's coastline, especially over the last 200
years, has been greatly disrupted. Individuals, groups and government bodies need to manage these
issues in order to achieve a sustainable and equitable management strategies within our coastal
zone. One of the dominant physical elements that has major effects on Australian coastline is the
issue of erosion. Erosion is defined as the wearing away of physical rock by wind and water Many
coastal landforms such as cliffs, platforms, headland, caves, blowholes and stacks are formed by the
process of erosion. It is the key

Sea Level Rise In Vancouver
The topic of sea level rise in Vancouver has a myriad of different tensions and perspectives. A major
tension of sea level rise is the uncertainty of how this will affect the world today, and because this is
a recent issue, there is little past evidence or research on the effect this will have on coastal
cities(Karl & Trenberth, 2003). As a consequence, the infrastructure in Vancouver was laid out with
little to no insight towards the possibility of the sea surrounding them rising above what was
deemed to be a static level at the time(Owrangi et al, 2014). Along with poorly planned a poorly
planned infrastructure, there could also be a vast array of issues introduced by sea level rise that are
were unpredicted due to the lack of occurrences

Coastline Erosion Research Paper
The very nature of our ocean is to rise and fall, to sway with the pull of the moon, and to churn
violently as the winds howl. The ocean has been this way since its inception and it will continue to
do so as the arrow of time marches on. There have been cycles in which the nature of the ocean has
wavered, but an equilibrium is kept, and life adapts. However, in our grotesque folly, we have
decided that this should no longer be the case. We have changed the nature of our oceans so
suddenly that life is crushed by force exerted through this change. Temperatures rise without regard
to ecosystem or environment. Glaciers sweat profusely from the bombardment of heat. Sea levels
rise. The importance of the oceans to the world at large cannot be understated. ... Show more

As the sea rises, the waves push more into the coast and drag the coastal deposits back into the
ocean. Similar to hill sides and mountain sides that experience erosion when they have low or no
existing vegetation to protect from the eroding effects of the weather, coastlines face the issue of
erosion as well. If this were to happen, the recession of coastline ecosystem may lead to more
damaging effects due to the sea and its weather on the nearby land area and people. Fortunately, the
effects of coastline erosion can be somewhat mitigated. With regards to diminishing coasts, there
will be a massive displacement of people. As the sea level rises, the current coastlines will recede.
Unfortunately, there are large portions of people who live near coasts. This is especially true on
islands. With the sea level rising, we will need to find ways to take care of the people that will leave
the area and the large amount of damage done by the encroaching coast line. There are remedies to
these issues, one of which is build up fortifications against the sea rise. The sea rise can be mitigated
through various means. One of these is to build a wall that will keep water out of areas that are near
the sea and in danger of flooding or destruction due to sea level

The Holderness Coastline Essay examples
The Holderness Coastline
The infamous Holderness Coastline is located on the East coast of Yorkshire, stretching from
Flamborough Head to Spurn Point. In the last 2000 years the coastline has retreated by almost 400m
and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington and
Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost
32km west of where it now is. During the Ice Age deposits of soft boulder clay were built up against
these cliffs to form the new coastline. It is this soft sand and clay which is easily eroded by the
action of waves, as the ocean slowly claims back the region it used to occupy.

This is evident at both Great Cowden and Easington.
The Holderness Coastline is also extremely exposed with little protection. The original coastline
before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is still present today at Flamborough Head where a
headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay. This
outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down to
Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing almost head on dominant waves. The coastline is
also exposed to strong North/North–East winds, which co–enside with a rather generous fetch.
Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs, removing
masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong marine erosion.
The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which
act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides, currents and storms, therefore the sea's processed
are able to keep cutting back the cliff line.
The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves,
and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy erosion. In addition is increased sub–aerial denudation
brought about by the heavy rain and strong winds. This often leads to increased slumping and

Nature Is A Product Of The Earth
Coastlines have always been something of interest throughout human history. We have built homes,
parks and even cities along them, but at what cost? "Coastlines are not found in nature; they are
products of human initiative..." (Gillis 99). This quote said by John R. Gillis brings up a very
important discussion. Are coastlines found in nature or have they been built into something we as
humans wanted them to be? When the quote is first read, it may be easy to say of course coastlines
exist in nature because they are nature. Although, when looking at it deeper one must ask what is the
definition of nature. Nature is defined as the physical world collectively, including plants, animals,
the landscape, and other features and products of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without those piles and bulkheads those houses would not be able to be there. Which is an example
of changing nature to support the want we have to live on the coast. This was seen also in San
Francisco in the mid 1800's.
The gold rush hit San Francisco in 1849 and in two years the town of 1,000 people turned into a
large coastal city of 25,000 people. The land behind the bay was mountains and was not a good fit
for expanding the city so they built near the shore. As the city grew throughout the years a need for
more land increased. They began to build into the bay and actual changed the outline of the coast
entirely. They used the steam paddy to fill in large areas of the San Francisco's coast. As they began
to make land and build on it numerous problems began to be discovered. Besides physically
changing the entire shoreline of San Francisco, it created "man–traps" that were uneven fillings of
land that would sink when people stepped on them, it also created seismic hazards, which was seen
by the 1906 Earthquake, and fire hazards, which was also seen by the Great Fire of 1851 (Dyl
Lecture). This is a perfect example of a coast being a product of human initiative. As the need for
land increased along the coast we as people had no problem changing the coast. J.D. Stillman was
quoted in the Overland Monthly in 1868 saying "Men, in their

How Do Hurricanes Affect Southern Coastlines
Over the course of humanity, there have been several notable types of disasters ranging from severe
floods, earthquakes, tornados, fires, ice storms, bombings, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Many
individuals have experienced some form of these disasters throughout their life, either natural or
manmade. "Surveys suggest that 13–30% of individuals will be exposed to one or more natural
disasters in their lifetime" (Jacob, 2015, p. 512). Along the eastern and southern United States
coastlines, the more common disaster associated with these areas are hurricanes. "Each year, on
average, 10 tropical storms, of which six become hurricanes, develop over the Atlantic Ocean,
Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico from June to November. Many of these remain over the ocean;
however, about five hurricanes strike the United States coastline every three years" (Hurricanes, nd,
para 4). Based on this average, roughly two hurricanes per year make landfall. Depending on the
severity, that is two large areas with several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Is Australia's Response To Coastal Management Issues

Against The Tide Summary
After reading the book Against The Tide by Cornelia Dean I think that the national policy for
governing developing coastlines should be dependent on an areas geologic features. In order to do
this, government officials would have to evaluate and create detailed reports to battle erosion in
specific areas rather than simply proposing a project that worked in a different place. In terms of
development, I think that if a project is going to be undertaken over a large area coastal geologists
and engineers should make small–scale models of the region containing the planned infrastructure.
After a few years, the isolated small scale should be observed for long–term effects so that they are
known before construction begins. Additionally, if the

Skills That Scientists Use To Understand The Natural World
1 a. What is Science? Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic
study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and
experiment. Science is a way of learning about the natural world through exploring and answering
questions. Science is also the knowledge gained through that process. b. Explain three main skills
that scientists use? The Three main skills that scientist use to understand the natural world are
observation, inference and prediction. Observation is using one or more of your senses to gather
information. Inference is when you explain or interpret the things that you observe and prediction
means making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence. c.

What kind of data would you need to collect?
I would need to collect data on morning sky color at the coastline and data regarding storm weather
nearby. Color could be determined from photographic data and storm weather would be determined

3. a. What is a scientific theory? What is a scientific law?
A scientific theory is a well–substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on
a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.
A scientific law is a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes what will
happen every time under a particular set of conditions. b. How do scientific theories differ from
scientific laws?

The On The Arid Coastline Of Oil Rich Libya
On the arid coastline of oil–rich Libya you can find a struggling desert community consumed in war
and crime – the city of
Benghazi. Beginning with the overthrow of King Idris in 1969 and the 42 year reign of dictator
Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been anything but a stable country. The controversial dictatorship of
Gaddafi, his overthrowing in 2011, and the subsequent reign of terror by numerous militant groups
that hold Benghazi in their grip to this day have contributed to numerous deaths (Maslin, 2016) and
thousands displaced. Another aspect of Benghazi's fight for survival stems from the relatively recent
introduction of constant fresh water. In 1953, while searching for oil, Gaddafi discovered an ancient
underground aquifer that since has been the #1 source of fresh water for Libya (Borrell, 1986). With
waging war causing power outages and infrastructure at risk of being bombed, this water source,
called fossil water, is unreliable as ever (Hrimark, 2011) Amidst an unstable government, ISIS's
reign of terror and an unreliable source of water, Benghazi is at risk of losing itself as a civilization.
On September 1,1969 Muammar Gaddafi, leader of the Revolutionary Command Council,
overthrew King Idris and took control of Libyan government. Gaddafi's actions were fueled by his
want of independence from western civilization and to obtain power over the majority of the oil
supply in Libya (Okechukwu, 2012). During his 42 year reign of power, Gaddafi made many

Global Warming : A Controversial Issue
"Preventing global warming from becoming a planetary catastrophe may take something even more
drastic than renewable energy, superefficient urban design, and global carbon taxes" (Jamais Cascio,
TED Talk). Global warming has been a highly controversial issue. Global warming is the
everlasting rise in the standard temperature of earth due to widespread accumulation of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere, which ultimately forms a layer that traps heat and warms the planet. With
the temperature rising, this causes the melting of the polar ice caps. Ultimately, this causes the sea
levels to rise, which can threaten lives and the environment. According to Olutoyin Fashae and
Olumide Onafeso, "global sea levels have been estimated to rise significantly." The effect of sea
level rising and ocean surge is causing major impacts of climate change to the urban Lagos in
Nigeria.
Within the past 100 years about 70% of the world's shorelines have been consumed by the ocean
waters, while 30% of it have been stable and 10% have been quickly advancing (Bird 1993). As
global warming and sea level rises, more and more of the world's beautiful shorelines are eroding
further. According to studies it has been shown that atmospheric toxins such as nitric acid can cause
corrosion through acidification. This is a possibility to the eroding shorelines of Lagos due to the
corrosion effects of global warming ("Impact of climate change on sea level rise in Lagos,
Nigeria"). Lagos is one of the most

Anna: OK. Given the changes you want, I think we ought to define the word "component."
Jeff: Good question. You have to think about how we buy and upgrade. Sometimes we buy a

Anna: If you buy it as one unit, do you get all the detailed component information and enter it to the

Jeff: No, because if we bought it as a unit we let the vendor service it as a unit under warranty. In
those cases a complete system would be a single component. But then later we upgrade a hard drive,
add RAM, replace something, etc. A replacement NIC can be a separate component.
Anna: I know we custom build some PCs. What about them?
Jeff: A PC that we build from individual parts is all components.

blossoming. As with many coastlines around the world Cap Blanc is made up of currents and waves,
which create tides that meet along the earth to form the sand filled beach.

Currents under the sea play an important role in the formation of a coastline. Currents may be
generated by density differences in water masses caused by temperature and salinity variations
(NOAA, 2013). These currents move large water masses through deep ocean taking nutrients,
oxygen, and heat with them (NOAA, 2013). However, some currents are affected by other variables
such as huge storms that move water masses, underwater earthquakes that may also trigger tsunamis

waves that are created far from shore in deeper water and intensify as they move closer to land
(NOAA, 2014). The most deadly waves, are formed underwater and displace large amounts of water
quickly. They are caused by disturbances such as earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions
(NOAA, 2014). These type of colossal waves are known as tsunamis (NOAA, 2014). Waves are

Introduction
The changes endured by Coastline occurred in the very specific context of privatisation. In this
perspective, clashes of paradigms are common, in particular in the way knowledge is viewed and
exercised as well as between the past and present goals of companies engaged in such process. As
described by Grey and Mitev (quoted in Wilson, 1995, p.59): "If 'post–industrial society' does offer
the possibility of decentralization of work and industrial structures, as well as an increase in the
quantity of information and/or knowledge, it is important to remember that these changes have
emerged in particular circumstances, that is, the countervailing tendencies towards (re)centralization
of overall control; an increasing privatization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to the fact that engineers' power (it is, according to French and Raven's 1959 definition,
both a legitimate and expert power) was largely legitimated by their knowledge, and that losing the
exclusive exercise of it actually weakened their legitimacy both as professionals and managers.
Indeed, engineers' managerial dimension was also weakened (although officially reinforced) by the
fact that TQM and team working usually comes along with the "concept of horizontal surveillance
among the individual team members" (Wilson, 1995, p.66) in which team members control each
others work. Furthermore, TQM procedures and "Job Redesign" measures (acquiring a part of
engineers' knowledge) also provide them the power to check their own work individually and
therefore change then vertical control process by making them more independent of engineers. The
programme "Partner Coaching" is also a good example of how TQM procedures may lead to a
normalisation and therefore to the controllability of individuals, as Wilson demonstrate: "The
techniques of 'strengthening' a corporate culture become the preventives of contamination of
employees by rival values and the alignment of employee purpose with the normative

The Coastline Research Paper
With approximately 85% percent of Australia's population living within 50km of it, the coastline has
always been a popular haven for human civilization. In Qld, many say that it has become
fundamentally important to us, both as a natural resource and as a means of revenue. Despite our
inclination towards them, however, coastlines are delicate and dynamic environments susceptible to

Sandbags had been placed to prevent erosion, replantation on the dunes was evident, a lengthy fence
line had been constructed to prevent human damage of the dunes, and numerous pathways/staircases
had been constructed to allow safe descent from the bank.
2.4 Success of Coastal Management Practices:
Overall, current management practices have been insufficient in protecting the wellbeing of the
coastline (i.e. the beach itself is considerably eroded, and the fence line and access routes are in
disrepair). As a consequence, the location requires more attention.
Firstly, more bins could be placed around the beach to discourage people from littering and the
fence line should be repaired. The distressed Mangroves could also be assisted in their recovery and
regrowth as they may be useful as a buffer zone in the future. Finally, there should be more dune
plantation to secure the bank and prevent further erosion, and perhaps, even the implementation of a
rock wall to prevent further coastal recession.

Choosing The Coastline Analysis
I decided to choose coastlines as my theme because I haven't properly studied it before; I've looked
at nature and animals, but not the coast. I also love all the surface textures that can be found on the
coast, they are all rough and worn away. Close up pictures are my interest and the coastline has so
many amazing textures which I find are important to capture in a painting or piece of artwork.
Colour is an important thing to consider when looking at each chosen subject, every colour matters
in a painting, it helps create a mood and an atmosphere, it gives life to a painting. I want people to
look at my work and feel something, for it to provoke a strong emotion whether it is moody or
happy, calm or angry, I want my work to create a lasting

Similarities Between Mexico And Venezuela
Mexico and Venezuela are very similar. They both depend on oil and have a warm climate.
Mexico is the uppermost country in Latin America. They have a lot of coastline and have a warm
semi tropic climate. They exploit their coast line by fishing and trading. Their main natural resource
is oil and other petroleum products. They also produce copper, iron, gold, zinc, and lead. Mexico
still hasn't used their natural resources to the fullest, but they are trying to. Mexico's climate and
coastline also cause for tourists.

soybeans, rice, beans, cotton, coffee, fruit, tomatoes, beef, poultry, dairy products and wood
products, but their main source of inflow comes from oil though. They ship out estimated 1.7

Documentary Analysis: After The Spill
After The Spill is a documentary about the relationship fossil fuel companies have with Louisiana
residents and their impact on the environment. The film revolves mainly around the Deep Water
Horizon oil rig spill in 2010, but also explores other disasters. While the film had interesting subject
matter and was not particularly long, it seemed to drag out for longer than it should. The fossil fuel
industry is a very large aspect of the Louisiana economy and it has been for quite a long time. Much
of the film is about the lawsuits the residents of Louisiana have been struggling with since the spill
occurred. The environmental impact has significantly hurt the fishing industries and workers
attempting to clean up the coastline have also come

Lucas V. South Carolina Coastal Council Case Study
Individual rights versus the good of the community, is an issue that American has struggled with for
a long time. In addition, the case of Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council Mr. Lucas contended
that his two beautiful but fragile beachfront properties located in Barrier Islands were made
worthless by the passage of the Beachfront Management Act. According to the Supreme Court, the
Coastal Council was simply using its "police powers" to "protect our state's unstable coastline from
further erosion caused by construction." (South Carolina Tribune) Because of Mr. Lucas' right to
life, liberty and property provided by the Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution, he felt he was
entitled to "just compensation" for his land which he purchased legally.

Research Paper On Coastal Erosion
Coastal erosion is an ecological hazard that has been occurring for centuries however rising sea
levels and increasingly erratic weather patterns have the potential to advance the danger and
destruction to much greater levels. While the enormous wave action created by huge storms such as
hurricanes is the most contributive to coastal erosion, the normal but repetitive wave action against
the shoreline is just as destructive over the long term. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land
and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage
or high winds. The coastal land is made up of many and various types of wetlands. Wetland types
found in coastal watersheds include salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes,
mangrove swamps, and shrubby depressions known in the southeast United States as pocosins.
Coastal wetlands cover about 40 million acres and make up 38 percent of the total wetland acreage
in the conterminous United States. 81 percent of coastal wetlands in the conterminous United States
are located in the southeast.
Coastal erosion is major problem in our world today. Water is the biggest factor that shapes the

This chemical based erosion occurs only with certain types of rock such as chalk or limestone,
which are high in calcite. The acidity of the seawater causes a chemical reaction in the mineral,
eating away at it. Another form of erosion is abrasion. This occurs when the sediment suspended in
the water is thrown against the shore by waves. The sediments grind against the land, weakening the
structural integrity of the coastline. Attrition is also a form of erosion. It's the continued wave action
hurls stones and other material at the land, which smooths and breaks up the rocks on the coast,
dislodging them from one another. These in turn collide with other rocks on the

Ocean Currents Affect Coastal Climates
Wind powered surface currents and waves, along with moon and sun powered tides, greatly impact
Earth's coastlines. As warm or cold water ocean currents affect coastal climates, waves release
energy, shifting sand and sediments, eroding and replenishing coastline shores; all while tides raise
and lower sea level. Florida's east coast, encompassed by barrier islands, is affected by subtropical
ocean waters provided by the Gulf Stream, facilitating warm and humid climates, as well as
hurricanes. As these warm ocean waters interact with Florida's barrier islands, through wave action
and tides, its coastline continuously transforms.
The ocean current that flows north alongside Florida's east coast, the Gulf Stream, is one of the most
important factors in determining Florida's climate. Beginning near the equator, the warm waters of
the North Equatorial Current eventually feed into the Gulf Stream, which begins at the southern tip
of Florida. This Equatorial transfer of heat through ocean currents is what facilitates Florida's warm
and humid climate. To illustrate the influence ocean currents have on coastal climates, we can
compare the climate of Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur with the climate of Miami, Florida,
because they reside on North America's west and east coasts respectively, around the 25'N Latitude
line. Puerto San Carlos has a desert climate, averaging under 3 inches of precipitation per year, with
70 degree average temperatures; while Miami has a

If you have ever lived in proximity to coastal areas you may have seen coastline erosion first hand.
The beaches you frequent during the summer may seem to be getting smaller and smaller every
year. Why does your favorite beach seem to be disappearing? Coastal erosion is to blame. The
waves, wind, tides and currents all play a part in the mechanism that is coastal erosion. When water
and wind batter the shoreline sediments are carried out to sea and deposited on the sea floor or at
other points along the coastline. This is called an erosional coastline. This erosion may be very
apparent or seem to have happened overnight when it happens due to a large storm or extremely
high tide.

(Chambers, 2007) At this point the headland becomes a sea arch. As time passes water erodes at the
base of the sea arch and wind and freezing water create a hydraulic effect in the cracks on the arch
portion and eventually it crumbles creating a sea stack. Through further erosion due to wave current
tidal and wind action the sea stack eventually wears down to a smaller version of what it was
originally, it is now known as a sea stump. The next illustration depicts the processes that
encompass the creation of a sea arch through erosion to a sea stump. (Chambers, 2007)
Wave cut platforms are another feature of an erosional coastline. Along coastlines with cliff edges
that sit about the shore these features are apparent they look like gently sloping areas of landnear the
shore just above sea level. (Chambers, 2007) These benches and marine terraces are the product of
wave action eroding the rock at the base of the cliff until the cliff cannot support itself on its new
foundation and crumbles into the sea. Over time the collapsed land will have much of the smaller
debris eroded away and much of the remaining rock or earth will be somewhat smoothed over to
create a gentle slope to the water. (Chambers, 2007)

College Is A Great Feeder School For Brigham Young University
University or Community College.
Ever since I can remember my parents told me that college was key to being successful in life. If
you didn 't attend a good college your life was most likely not going to be a very happy one. This
message has stayed with me throughout my life , education was of great importance and college was
the key factor of where you ended up in life. High school counselors, teachers, parents, and mentors
all emphasized that the better the college you attend the more opportunities you 'll have. When I was
a high school senior and had to think seriously about the future, I applied for many schools and
landed at Utah Valley University, a great feeder school for Brigham Young University. I attended
Utah Valley University for 1 semester, following Utah Valley I attend a community college instead,
Coastline Community College. I have so far been enrolled at coastline for about a month and can
see the likenesses and the differences between the university life and the community college life. I
can see no college is alike, and that doesn 't mean one college is better than another. It took
transferring to a community college to see that not even a university is better than a community
college.
Utah Valley University and Coastline Community College, weren 't the same type of college, but
actually had quite a bit of similarities in many aspects. One of these very noticeable aspects, is the
teaching staff at the colleges. Both of the colleges had teachers that

The Pros And Cons Of Eco-Coastline In Hong Kong
Basing argument on whether or not to adopt echo–shoreline in Hong Kong; it is pragmatic to state
that eco–shoreline should be adopted so that a balance would be reached in the quest to maintain the
fauna and flora, and at the same time enhance human and economic activities along the coastlines.
This process should be adopted in systematical way so that the aquatic life and the natural features
along the coastline could be maintained. Biodiversity should be well understood and adopted in
Hong Kong; this is in line with effective ecological coastlines leading to interdepend ably mutual
benefits.

The Photograph, Two Beds
The photograph, Two Beds, Two Windows taken by Jack Leigh is a silver gelatin print from 1981.
In this era of color photography, a photograph like this with black, white and grey hues is a novelty,
especially for the younger generation. On first glance, the exhibit appears to be a simple photograph
of a cabin with two beds and two windows giving a view of a coastline and an ocean in the distance.
Even then it does manage to strike a chord and one can identify with 'The Conflict Within ' the
human mind. It is a perfect metaphorical representation of the two sides of the human mind. On
seeing the photo for the first time one can conclude that it shows the interior of a bedroom in a cabin
and that it is located on the coast. The room has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas outside the windows, one can see some shrubbery followed by a coastline and an endless
ocean stretching up to the horizon outside. Its vastness is compelling. There are two beds inside the
room. The bed to the left is covered with a ruffled bed sheet of indistinct and dull print. It even has a
pillow flung on top of it. The other is covered neatly with a bright bed sheet having a flower print
design. Here the pillow is tucked away beneath the sheet. Out of the two windows in the room, the
one on the left has the shutter half way down and the one to the right has the shutter wide open. But
both windows are shut and at the top, light can be seen streaming in mainly through the unshuttered
window. It helps brighten, mostly the right side of the room. Windows and beds are separated by
chasms of dark shadows. The walls are made of horizontal planks of wood. Outside the window, one
can see shrubs causing a barricade like appearance. This is followed by the coastline and the ocean
waves crashing against it. In the distance one can see the sky meeting the ocean at the horizon.
This photograph of a bedroom overlooking the coastline in grey hues immediately sets one in a
reflective mood. The use of sharp lines and the closed space in the cabin is strikingly similar to a
closed human mind. The bedroom, a place of leisure and rest can be considered a representation of
the subconscious mind. Here one's

The Effects Of Melting Glaciers On Canada 's Coastline Essay
1.0 INTRODUCTION This problem could mark either the end of human civilizations or mark the
beginning of the next era of human development. It would decide on our species survival, whether
there will be another mass extinction like the one 65 million years ago. The question is "How might
the breaking up and melting of continental ice in Greenland and the Antarctic affect Canada's
coastline?". In the following sections, we have gathered an abundance of information from a variety
of sources from which we will discuss, and analyze. We will find out how this data can help us
understand the effect of melting glaciers on Canada's coastline, as well as how and what we could
do to stop or slow it down. 2.0 ISSUE OVERVIEW The breaking of continental ice from Greenland
and the Antarctic has been slowly breaking off and melting for a long time. The continental ice
which has broken off melts faster and faster as it drifts towards the equator, eventually deposing all
the fresh water ice into the ocean. This process, which would slowly drown the coastlines of the
entire world, including Canada, is very dangerous for the survival of human civilizations. Due to
Canada's larger and more exposed urban coastal regions, it will suffer a harder blow than most other
countries. Islands like Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia will be hit
particularly hard, losing a lot of its farmland and coastal towns due to the melting and breaking off
of continental ice. The continental ice

Texas. When the entire coastline of Florida was studied, Florida has 1,350 miles of coastline. There
are 35 counties that are along the coastline of Florida. One additional county was used that is not

It has a relative risk of 14.55 and a p–value of 0.297. The p–value again is greater than alpha of
0.05, and it is concluded that there is an equal chance of being bitten by a shark across all regions.
Another purely spatial analysis was run to scan for clusters with low–risk rates with a maximum
window size set to 50% as before. The resulting cluster was made of the counties of the northern
most part of Texas, all of the coastal counties of Louisiana and Mississippi and the most western
county in Alabama, which in Figure 9–12 is represented by regions 57–71. There is a relative risk of
0 and a p–value of 0.000016 (see Figure 8). Since the p–value of 0.000016 is less than alpha of 0.05,
the null hypothesis that there is an equal chance of being bitten by a shark is rejected; it can be
concluded that there is a lower risk in this region than all other regions studied as represented in
Figures 9–12. When the retrospective space–time analysis is run in SaTScanTM for high rates,
produced four clusters, but none of the p–values are less than alpha at 0.05. It appears that from
2004 to 2005, the risk of being bitten by a shark was heightened, and there is a relative risk of 22.46

Figure 1: Effects of Accretion (Komar, 1976)
During the summer months, when the seas are calmer and the waves smaller, beaches tend to build
up. This process is known as accretion (http://biology.usgs.gov/s+t/SNT/noframe/cr133.htm). If the
amount of winter erosion exceeds summer accretion, there is overall erosion with the land behind
the beach being eroded as the beach retreats inland. The rate of retreat is called the erosion rate.
Erosion may be due to one or more factors: for example, a severe winter swell, a recent hurricane,
the death of an adjacent coral reef or interference in the supply of sand. Conversely, if accretion
exceeds erosion, the beach gets wider over time and accretionary features, such as cuspate
forelands, tom bolos, spits and bars, may develop (see Figure 1).
Hurricanes
Extreme events such as hurricanes are the major cause of shoreline changes in the Caribbean. Many
hurricanes originate as tropical waves off the west coast of Africa and travel across the Atlantic
Ocean gaining strength from the warm ocean waters
(http://calspace.ucsd.edu/virtualmuseum/climatechange1/09_2.shtml). As tropical waves strengthen,
they pass through several stages, including tropical depression and tropical storm before reaching
hurricane strength. Once a system reaches tropical storm strength, it is named. Hurricanes are

The Atlantic Wall was the name given by Nazi Germany to an extensive coastal defensive structure
built on Hitler's orders that stretched all the way from Norway, along the Belgium and French

formed the central part of Hitler's 'Fortress Europe'. The Atlantic wall was built specifically to repel
an Anglo– American invasion of continental Europe. The construction of the Wall started in May
1942 and ended in august 1944. The building project was vast and most of it was done along the

What Are The Continents Coastlines Once Connected

  • 1. What Are The Continents Coastlines Once Connected Have you ever thought of the idea that the continents were once connected? Scientists believe that around 300 million years ago the seven continents we know today were once connected to each other to form one massive continent called Pangea. There is a lot of evidence that supports this idea. First of all, some continents have coastlines that would fit together like puzzle pieces. Secondly, there have been almost identical fossils found on different continents separated by miles of ocean. Lastly, similar glacier deposits are on four different continents. There is evidence that the shape of the continents coastlines were once connected. In Figure one I see that some continents coastlines look like they would fit together perfectly. It is almost like they are puzzle pieces. A good example of this would be the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa. I can imagine these pieces of land sliding together perfectly. Another example is, Australia's southern coastline rotated to Africa's southeast coastline is. The shape of the continents coastlines is evidence that all of the continents were connected at some point because the coastlines could fit together. There is fossil evidence that shows the continents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Figure three, I see that the southern sections of South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia all have similar glacier deposits from the Permian period. If the continents were where they are now when the glaciers were present, they would have come from the ocean. Since glaciers can only form over land and in very cold climates that would have been nearly impossible. My explanation for finding similar glacier deposits on different continents is they must have been connected and had a very cold climate. The similar glacier deposits found on different continents is evidence that the continents were once connected because of the elements glaciers need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. California Coast Case Study AUDIENCE Problem? Solution? So What? Audience 1: Scientists / Environmental Professionals Land–use change will likely pose a greater threat to biodiversity than climate change in this century. For the California Coastline, poorly planned extensive development will likely result in land use changes that will further fragment the coastline, posing a direct threat to continued conservation. In a recent spatial analysis, the California coast ecoregions had the lowest percentage of formally protected land and ranked highest in the conversion threat index (CTI). Continued conservation of the California Coast, involves preservation of areas that are not currently developed. The California Coastal Commission (CCC) currently has jurisdiction over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You're tucking your hood into your wetsuit, and a security officer tells you can no longer enter the water at this point, because it is a private beach. Is this a forthcoming reality? Unfortunately, it may become a reality if the California Coastal Commission (CCC) fails to fight development the way it has in the past. Recently, Charles Lester, a longtime advocate against development and historic guardian of the California coastline was fired from his position as the Executive Director at the CCC, on grounds that he was not doing a good job of balancing development needs with coastal preservation. Prior to his dismissal, the social media newsfeeds of surfers and ocean lovers alike was inundated with the news. Thousands made the pilgrimage to Morro Bay, to support Lester. Despite efforts, Lester was fired and the news faded–the coast could now become developed in areas where it never was before. While the firing of Charles Lester is over, ocean–lovers, surfers, and beach lovers alike cannot just let the new CCC have its way. We cannot let the bottomless pockets of developers speak too loudly to CCC members. We have to speak just as loudly, and remain aware of the actions taking place in our local areas. Write to your representatives; join action organizations such as Surfrider, if you have not already. Be aware of the events ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Ocean's Timeline Before there were good ships, many of the people who were on voyages died on the ocean. Our high tech ships of today aren't able to withstand its crushing power. It is one of most powerful natural features on earth. The ocean has many interesting characteristics. Below the water is like another world. We call these features the ocean profile. The ocean's coastline also has many interesting qualities. The ocean profile is like the underwater geography of the ocean. The eight main features are the shoreline, continental shelf, continental slope, trench, Guyot, abyssal plain, ridges, and the rift. The edge of the ocean where it meets the land is called the shoreline. The part of the continental land that is underwater is called the continental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sea cliffs, beaches, river valleys, bays, sandbars, sea stacks, and sea arches are examples of coastline features. Sea cliffs are high walls of rock. They are formed when erosion from the waves takes place on a raised piece of land forming a sharp drop off in the land. Beaches are the portion of land that is the area between low and high tide. Many beaches are made of millions of tiny quartz particles called sand. River valleys is a stream that erodes itself into the land forming a valley. River valleys are an important source of sediments going to the sea. A bay is a broad inlet of the sea where a sandbar partly encloses it from the sea. A sandbar is a thin piece of land which curves toward the land usually enclosing a bay. Sometimes sandbars are made of sediments carried by the waves. Sea stacks are tall narrow rocks along the seacoast. Sometimes sea cliffs can be eroded by waves into a large arch made of rock. Like the ocean itself, the coastline is full of beautiful qualities. The ocean profile is full of features like underwater mountains, cliffs, valleys, volcanoes, and plains. The coastline, which is a feature of the ocean profile, is full of beauty and variety. Erosion helps in the formation of both ocean profile and the coastline. Without erosion they would not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Adelaide's Beaches Analysis The coast is the buffer between terrestrial land and the marine, it is the boundary of where land meets water which is known as the coastline. Tides, waves and currents are what help form coastlines. However, when waves meet or crash on the shore, they erode the land, leaving behind tiny parts of the sea such as shells, seaweed and marine life. Although, over the past 30 years central beaches are continually eroding because sand is pushed along the coast by waves. (BAC Australia, n.d) Coastlines are badly affected by erosion and The Coast Protection Board is urgently needed to protect and manage Adelaide's beaches. Without them managing the beaches, several of Adelaide's southern metropolitan beaches will be left with very little sand on them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Geological history has ancient records of Australia being connected to Antarctica land mass, being apart of Gondwanaland. This mass of land was mainly above sea level, which began to change due to the tertiary period because of extreme climates and erosion. Australia was separated from Gondwanaland approximately 55 million years ago. (Department for environmental heritage and Aboriginal Affairs, n.d) The separation of the continents occurred along the continent that is now known as the southern boundary. (ibid) The what seems like simple separation of land caused huge movements and resurfaced a lot of land. For example, the St Vincent basin which is located north/south of Australia was dramatically changed and formed step–able rocks, and the Adelaide hills were also formed. Sea levels were also dramatically sunken 120 meters below the average level than what sea levels show today. In the 21st century the movements still exist and happen daily, however, that are at a very slow rate. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Graduation Speech At Utah Valley University Ever since I could remember my parents told me that college was key to being successful in life, if you didn 't attend a good college your life was most likely not going to be a very happy one. This message stay throughout my life , education was of great importance and college was the key factor of where you ended up in life. High school counselors, teachers, parents, and mentors all emphasized that the better the college you attend the more opportunities you 'll have. Being a high school senior and having to think seriously about the future now, I applied for many schools and landed at Utah Valley University, a great feeder school for Brigham Young University. I attended Utah Valley University for 1 semester and I really enjoyed many aspects of going to a university but decided to go back home to orange county and attend a community college instead, Coastline Community College. I have so far been enrolled at coastline for about a month and can see the likenesses and the differences between the university life and the community college life. I can see no college is alike, and that doesn 't mean one college is better than another. It took transferring to a community college to see that not even a university is better than a community college. Utah Valley University and Coastline Community College, weren 't the same type of school but actually had quite a bit of similarities. • 6. Physical And Human Elements Of Coastal Zone Environment Describe the interaction of physical and human elements of coastal zone environment and discuss the different strategic response of individuals, groups and government bodies to the issue of coastal management. The interaction between the physical and human elements of the coastal environment has had a considerable effect on the various coastal zones in Australia and specific strategic events responses of individuals, groups and governments. Australia has over 37 000 kilometres of coastline, 11 000 beaches and thousands of coastal landforms. Approximately 85% of Australia's population live within 50 km of the coast. The coast is where the ocean meets the land and the coastal zone comprises of many different environments including rivers, bays, wetlands, beaches, coral reefs, estuaries and the continental shelf. Due to rapid urbanisation and development and other human and physical processes such as erosion Australia's coastline, especially over the last 200 years, has been greatly disrupted. Individuals, groups and government bodies need to manage these issues in order to achieve a sustainable and equitable management strategies within our coastal zone. One of the dominant physical elements that has major effects on Australian coastline is the issue of erosion. Erosion is defined as the wearing away of physical rock by wind and water Many coastal landforms such as cliffs, platforms, headland, caves, blowholes and stacks are formed by the process of erosion. • 7. Sea Level Rise In Vancouver The topic of sea level rise in Vancouver has a myriad of different tensions and perspectives. A major tension of sea level rise is the uncertainty of how this will affect the world today, and because this is a recent issue, there is little past evidence or research on the effect this will have on coastal cities(Karl & Trenberth, 2003). As a consequence, the infrastructure in Vancouver was laid out with little to no insight towards the possibility of the sea surrounding them rising above what was deemed to be a static level at the time(Owrangi et al, 2014). Along with poorly planned a poorly planned infrastructure, there could also be a vast array of issues introduced by sea level rise that are were unpredicted due to the lack of occurrences ... • 8. Coastline Erosion Research Paper The very nature of our ocean is to rise and fall, to sway with the pull of the moon, and to churn violently as the winds howl. The ocean has been this way since its inception and it will continue to do so as the arrow of time marches on. There have been cycles in which the nature of the ocean has wavered, but an equilibrium is kept, and life adapts. However, in our grotesque folly, we have decided that this should no longer be the case. We have changed the nature of our oceans so suddenly that life is crushed by force exerted through this change. Temperatures rise without regard to ecosystem or environment. Glaciers sweat profusely from the bombardment of heat. Sea levels rise. The importance of the oceans to the world at large cannot be understated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the sea rises, the waves push more into the coast and drag the coastal deposits back into the ocean. Similar to hill sides and mountain sides that experience erosion when they have low or no existing vegetation to protect from the eroding effects of the weather, coastlines face the issue of erosion as well. If this were to happen, the recession of coastline ecosystem may lead to more damaging effects due to the sea and its weather on the nearby land area and people. Fortunately, the effects of coastline erosion can be somewhat mitigated. With regards to diminishing coasts, there will be a massive displacement of people. As the sea level rises, the current coastlines will recede. Unfortunately, there are large portions of people who live near coasts. This is especially true on islands. With the sea level rising, we will need to find ways to take care of the people that will leave the area and the large amount of damage done by the encroaching coast line. There are remedies to these issues, one of which is build up fortifications against the sea rise. The sea rise can be mitigated through various means. One of these is to build a wall that will keep water out of areas that are near the sea and in danger of flooding or destruction due to sea level ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Holderness Coastline Essay examples The Holderness Coastline The infamous Holderness Coastline is located on the East coast of Yorkshire, stretching from Flamborough Head to Spurn Point. In the last 2000 years the coastline has retreated by almost 400m and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington and Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost 32km west of where it now is. During the Ice Age deposits of soft boulder clay were built up against these cliffs to form the new coastline. It is this soft sand and clay which is easily eroded by the action of waves, as the ocean slowly claims back the region it used to occupy. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is evident at both Great Cowden and Easington. The Holderness Coastline is also extremely exposed with little protection. The original coastline before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is still present today at Flamborough Head where a headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay. This outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down to Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing almost head on dominant waves. The coastline is also exposed to strong North/North–East winds, which co–enside with a rather generous fetch. Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs, removing masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong marine erosion. The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides, currents and storms, therefore the sea's processed are able to keep cutting back the cliff line. The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves, and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy erosion. In addition is increased sub–aerial denudation brought about by the heavy rain and strong winds. This often leads to increased slumping and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Nature Is A Product Of The Earth Coastlines have always been something of interest throughout human history. We have built homes, parks and even cities along them, but at what cost? "Coastlines are not found in nature; they are products of human initiative..." (Gillis 99). This quote said by John R. Gillis brings up a very important discussion. Are coastlines found in nature or have they been built into something we as humans wanted them to be? When the quote is first read, it may be easy to say of course coastlines exist in nature because they are nature. Although, when looking at it deeper one must ask what is the definition of nature. Nature is defined as the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without those piles and bulkheads those houses would not be able to be there. Which is an example of changing nature to support the want we have to live on the coast. This was seen also in San Francisco in the mid 1800's. The gold rush hit San Francisco in 1849 and in two years the town of 1,000 people turned into a large coastal city of 25,000 people. The land behind the bay was mountains and was not a good fit for expanding the city so they built near the shore. As the city grew throughout the years a need for more land increased. They began to build into the bay and actual changed the outline of the coast entirely. They used the steam paddy to fill in large areas of the San Francisco's coast. As they began to make land and build on it numerous problems began to be discovered. Besides physically changing the entire shoreline of San Francisco, it created "man–traps" that were uneven fillings of land that would sink when people stepped on them, it also created seismic hazards, which was seen by the 1906 Earthquake, and fire hazards, which was also seen by the Great Fire of 1851 (Dyl Lecture). This is a perfect example of a coast being a product of human initiative. As the need for land increased along the coast we as people had no problem changing the coast. J.D. Stillman was quoted in the Overland Monthly in 1868 saying "Men, in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. How Do Hurricanes Affect Southern Coastlines Over the course of humanity, there have been several notable types of disasters ranging from severe floods, earthquakes, tornados, fires, ice storms, bombings, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Many individuals have experienced some form of these disasters throughout their life, either natural or manmade. "Surveys suggest that 13–30% of individuals will be exposed to one or more natural disasters in their lifetime" (Jacob, 2015, p. 512). Along the eastern and southern United States coastlines, the more common disaster associated with these areas are hurricanes. "Each year, on average, 10 tropical storms, of which six become hurricanes, develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico from June to November. Many of these remain over the ocean; however, about five hurricanes strike the United States coastline every three years" (Hurricanes, nd, para 4). Against The Tide Summary After reading the book Against The Tide by Cornelia Dean I think that the national policy for governing developing coastlines should be dependent on an areas geologic features. In order to do this, government officials would have to evaluate and create detailed reports to battle erosion in specific areas rather than simply proposing a project that worked in a different place. In terms of development, I think that if a project is going to be undertaken over a large area coastal geologists and engineers should make small–scale models of the region containing the planned infrastructure. After a few years, the isolated small scale should be observed for long–term effects so that they are known before construction begins. Additionally, if the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Skills That Scientists Use To Understand The Natural World 1 a. What is Science? Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. Science is a way of learning about the natural world through exploring and answering questions. Science is also the knowledge gained through that process. b. Explain three main skills that scientists use? The Three main skills that scientist use to understand the natural world are observation, inference and prediction. Observation is using one or more of your senses to gather information. Inference is when you explain or interpret the things that you observe and prediction means making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence. c. A scientific theory is a well–substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. A scientific law is a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes what will happen every time under a particular set of conditions. b. Beginning with the overthrow of King Idris in 1969 and the 42 year reign of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been anything but a stable country. The controversial dictatorship of Gaddafi, his overthrowing in 2011, and the subsequent reign of terror by numerous militant groups that hold Benghazi in their grip to this day have contributed to numerous deaths (Maslin, 2016) and thousands displaced. Another aspect of Benghazi's fight for survival stems from the relatively recent introduction of constant fresh water. In 1953, while searching for oil, Gaddafi discovered an ancient underground aquifer that since has been the #1 source of fresh water for Libya (Borrell, 1986). With waging war causing power outages and infrastructure at risk of being bombed, this water source, called fossil water, is unreliable as ever (Hrimark, 2011) Amidst an unstable government, ISIS's reign of terror and an unreliable source of water, Benghazi is at risk of losing itself as a civilization. On September 1,1969 Muammar Gaddafi, leader of the Revolutionary Command Council, overthrew King Idris and took control of Libyan government. Gaddafi's actions were fueled by his want of independence from western civilization and to obtain power over the majority of the oil supply in Libya (Okechukwu, 2012). The macroinvertebrates were already living in a low quality creek full of pollution, so I would have also expected their population to decrease after introducing a predator to their environment. The crayfish reminded me of the keystone species sea stars, that I learned about through a lecture on communities and ecosystems. The study conducted on crayfish was similar to a study conducted on sea stars, except they were removed from coastlines instead of being added to see the effect they had. • 18. Global Warming : A Controversial Issue "Preventing global warming from becoming a planetary catastrophe may take something even more drastic than renewable energy, superefficient urban design, and global carbon taxes" (Jamais Cascio, TED Talk). Global warming has been a highly controversial issue. Global warming is the everlasting rise in the standard temperature of earth due to widespread accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which ultimately forms a layer that traps heat and warms the planet. With the temperature rising, this causes the melting of the polar ice caps. Ultimately, this causes the sea levels to rise, which can threaten lives and the environment. According to Olutoyin Fashae and Olumide Onafeso, "global sea levels have been estimated to rise significantly." The effect of sea level rising and ocean surge is causing major impacts of climate change to the urban Lagos in Nigeria. Within the past 100 years about 70% of the world's shorelines have been consumed by the ocean waters, while 30% of it have been stable and 10% have been quickly advancing (Bird 1993). As global warming and sea level rises, more and more of the world's beautiful shorelines are eroding further. According to studies it has been shown that atmospheric toxins such as nitric acid can cause corrosion through acidification. This is a possibility to the eroding shorelines of Lagos due to the corrosion effects of global warming ("Impact of climate change on sea level rise in Lagos, Nigeria"). Lagos is one of the most ... Sometimes we buy a complete system with CPU, monitor, mouse, keyboard – the works in one package. Anna: If you buy it as one unit, do you get all the detailed component information and enter it to the columns? Jeff: No, because if we bought it as a unit we let the vendor service it as a unit under warranty. In those cases a complete system would be a single component. But then later we upgrade a hard drive, add RAM, replace something, etc. A replacement NIC can be a separate component. Anna: I know we custom build some PCs. What about them? Jeff: A PC that we build from individual parts is all components. Anna: So, if everything is a component, is there any information that pertains to the PC in general? Jeff: Yes. First of all, this PC Configuration Sheet doesn't show it, but we need to track whether we are talking about a PC, a printer, a router, a hub or some other kind of technology equipment. The Cap Blanc coastline is definitely beautiful, offering not only the water but powerful red sands that meet the ocean just right. Although, there is a small population on Cap Blanc its desert like climate keeps it intact and blossoming. As with many coastlines around the world Cap Blanc is made up of currents and waves, which create tides that meet along the earth to form the sand filled beach. Currants Currents under the sea play an important role in the formation of a coastline. Currents may be generated by density differences in water masses caused by temperature and salinity variations (NOAA, 2013). These currents move large water masses through deep ocean taking nutrients, oxygen, and heat with them (NOAA, 2013). However, some currents are affected by other variables such as huge storms that move water masses, underwater earthquakes that may also trigger tsunamis (NOAA, 2013). The most deadly waves, are formed underwater and displace large amounts of water quickly. They are caused by disturbances such as earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions (NOAA, 2014). These type of colossal waves are known as tsunamis (NOAA, 2014). Waves are constantly changing in most coastlines depending on weather and underwater activity. In this perspective, clashes of paradigms are common, in particular in the way knowledge is viewed and exercised as well as between the past and present goals of companies engaged in such process. As described by Grey and Mitev (quoted in Wilson, 1995, p.59): "If 'post–industrial society' does offer the possibility of decentralization of work and industrial structures, as well as an increase in the quantity of information and/or knowledge, it is important to remember that these changes have emerged in particular circumstances, that is, the countervailing tendencies towards (re)centralization of overall control; an increasing privatization ... This is due to the fact that engineers' power (it is, according to French and Raven's 1959 definition, both a legitimate and expert power) was largely legitimated by their knowledge, and that losing the exclusive exercise of it actually weakened their legitimacy both as professionals and managers. Indeed, engineers' managerial dimension was also weakened (although officially reinforced) by the fact that TQM and team working usually comes along with the "concept of horizontal surveillance among the individual team members" (Wilson, 1995, p.66) in which team members control each others work. Furthermore, TQM procedures and "Job Redesign" measures (acquiring a part of engineers' knowledge) also provide them the power to check their own work individually and therefore change then vertical control process by making them more independent of engineers. The programme "Partner Coaching" is also a good example of how TQM procedures may lead to a normalisation and therefore to the controllability of individuals, as Wilson demonstrate: "The techniques of 'strengthening' a corporate culture become the preventives of contamination of employees by rival values and the alignment of employee purpose with the normative ... As a consequence, the location requires more attention. Firstly, more bins could be placed around the beach to discourage people from littering and the fence line should be repaired. The distressed Mangroves could also be assisted in their recovery and regrowth as they may be useful as a buffer zone in the future. • 27. Research Paper On Coastal Erosion Coastal erosion is an ecological hazard that has been occurring for centuries however rising sea levels and increasingly erratic weather patterns have the potential to advance the danger and destruction to much greater levels. While the enormous wave action created by huge storms such as hurricanes is the most contributive to coastal erosion, the normal but repetitive wave action against the shoreline is just as destructive over the long term. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds. The coastal land is made up of many and various types of wetlands. Wetland types found in coastal watersheds include salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes, mangrove swamps, and shrubby depressions known in the southeast United States as pocosins. Coastal wetlands cover about 40 million acres and make up 38 percent of the total wetland acreage in the conterminous United States. 81 percent of coastal wetlands in the conterminous United States are located in the southeast. • 28. Ocean Currents Affect Coastal Climates Wind powered surface currents and waves, along with moon and sun powered tides, greatly impact Earth's coastlines. As warm or cold water ocean currents affect coastal climates, waves release energy, shifting sand and sediments, eroding and replenishing coastline shores; all while tides raise and lower sea level. Florida's east coast, encompassed by barrier islands, is affected by subtropical ocean waters provided by the Gulf Stream, facilitating warm and humid climates, as well as hurricanes. As these warm ocean waters interact with Florida's barrier islands, through wave action and tides, its coastline continuously transforms. The ocean current that flows north alongside Florida's east coast, the Gulf Stream, is one of the most important factors in determining Florida's climate. Beginning near the equator, the warm waters of the North Equatorial Current eventually feed into the Gulf Stream, which begins at the southern tip of Florida. This Equatorial transfer of heat through ocean currents is what facilitates Florida's warm and humid climate. To illustrate the influence ocean currents have on coastal climates, we can compare the climate of Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur with the climate of Miami, Florida, because they reside on North America's west and east coasts respectively, around the 25'N Latitude line. The beaches you frequent during the summer may seem to be getting smaller and smaller every year. Why does your favorite beach seem to be disappearing? Coastal erosion is to blame. The waves, wind, tides and currents all play a part in the mechanism that is coastal erosion. When water and wind batter the shoreline sediments are carried out to sea and deposited on the sea floor or at other points along the coastline. This is called an erosional coastline. The next illustration depicts the processes that encompass the creation of a sea arch through erosion to a sea stump. (Chambers, 2007) Wave cut platforms are another feature of an erosional coastline. Along coastlines with cliff edges that sit about the shore these features are apparent they look like gently sloping areas of landnear the shore just above sea level. The Effects Of Melting Glaciers On Canada 's Coastline Essay 1.0 INTRODUCTION This problem could mark either the end of human civilizations or mark the beginning of the next era of human development. It would decide on our species survival, whether there will be another mass extinction like the one 65 million years ago. The question is "How might the breaking up and melting of continental ice in Greenland and the Antarctic affect Canada's coastline?". In the following sections, we have gathered an abundance of information from a variety of sources from which we will discuss, and analyze. We will find out how this data can help us understand the effect of melting glaciers on Canada's coastline, as well as how and what we could do to stop or slow it down. 2.0 ISSUE OVERVIEW The breaking of continental ice from Greenland and the Antarctic has been slowly breaking off and melting for a long time. The continental ice which has broken off melts faster and faster as it drifts towards the equator, eventually deposing all the fresh water ice into the ocean. This process, which would slowly drown the coastlines of the entire world, including Canada, is very dangerous for the survival of human civilizations. Due to Canada's larger and more exposed urban coastal regions, it will suffer a harder blow than most other countries. Islands like Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia will be hit particularly hard, losing a lot of its farmland and coastal towns due to the melting and breaking off of continental ice. This process is known as accretion (http://biology.usgs.gov/s+t/SNT/noframe/cr133.htm). If the amount of winter erosion exceeds summer accretion, there is overall erosion with the land behind the beach being eroded as the beach retreats inland. The rate of retreat is called the erosion rate. Erosion may be due to one or more factors: for example, a severe winter swell, a recent hurricane, the death of an adjacent coral reef or interference in the supply of sand. Conversely, if accretion exceeds erosion, the beach gets wider over time and accretionary features, such as cuspate forelands, tom bolos, spits and bars, may develop (see Figure 1). Hurricanes Extreme events such as hurricanes are the major cause of shoreline changes in the Caribbean.
