What are Physical Changes in Matter? Lesson #2
States of Matter Three States of Matter -solid -liquid -gas -Every substance on Earth can exist as a solid, as a liquid, or as a gas. -The difference between them is in the way the particles move. Example: Water
Solid Particles are close together (do not move) and just vibrate in place.
Liquid Particles that are close to each other, but also they move quickly and slide past each other easily.
Gas Particles are far apart and moving really fast.
4 Ways Substances Can Change State change of state -occurs when a substance changes from one another. Each change of state has its own name. solid to a liquid liquid to a gas gas to a liquid liquid to a solid -melting -boiling -condensing -freezing
Physical Changes physical change- is a change that does not result in a new substance. Examples of Physical Changes -cut, rip, fold, crumple, shred, carve, etc… (also changes in state- melting, freezing, boiling, and condensing) In a physical change, no new substance is formed. Example- If you shred paper. What is left? (paper) What you started with is what you ended with!
Mixtures In science, mixtures have a specific definition which is two or more substances that combine without changing any of them . Example: salad, vegetable soup, soil, lemonade, chocolate milk, etc… -Not all mixtures are made of solids, but most materials are found in nature. -Remember being in a mixture DOES NOT change the substance and mixtures can be separated back out.
