WECC (West of England Carbon Challenge) is a network of businesses and organizations in the Bristol and Bath region working to become more sustainable. It functions like a fitness club by providing support and making sustainability efforts less difficult when undertaken together. WECC offers networking events, expert speakers, workplace tours, case studies and use of EnergyDeck software to share best practices. Several member organizations, including Pukka Herbs, Buro Happold and Back to the Planet, are highlighted for their sustainability achievements in areas like emissions tracking, video conferencing and energy efficient equipment. WECC is looking to evolve its focus beyond direct emissions and partner with other groups to have wider regional impact on sustainability issues.

Last week the Asia Pacific Summit 2011 took place in London, presented by the London Business School and sponsored by leading telecommunications company Telstra International. Schumacher talks about a world where the ‘poor are getting poorer while the rich are getting richer’ where development co-operation primarily benefits the rich, where poor people struggle to find jobs, and flock into cities. Where science and technology has helped construct a system of production that ‘ravishes nature and a type of society that mutilates man’.
Practical Action was established by Fritz Schumacher to model a new form of development – one that was severely practical, that started with people and that used intermediate technology as a lever for change.
Margaret will talk about Practical Action’s experience, how for the last 50 years they have demonstrated in the Global South the success of many of Fritz’s ideas. She will also address current challenges - the impact of climate change and growing inequality. Practical Action is building a vision, on the shoulders of Fritz Schumacher, of a new approach to technology – one that uses technology to help end poverty and protect our planet – something they call Technology Justice.

E.F. Schumacher was President of the Soil Association from 1970–77. During this time he wrote an article for the Association’s Living Earth magazine, in which he passionately made the case for the practical application of economic and organic thinking into practice and lived experience. ‘Let us not defend a type of pristine virginity’, he noted in 1971, ‘to remain a little, esoteric splinter group, at a time when the whole world is crying out for precisely the kind of thinking the Soil Association has been engaged in for the past 25 years’.
It is in this spirit that the Food For Life Partnership was founded by the SA 10 years ago, a tiny pilot in 5 schools to see whether engaging children, their teachers and their school cooks in growing organic produce, visiting organic farms, and learning to prepare wonderful healthy food could transform their well being and sense of connecting with nature. From this ‘acorn’ a major initiative has developed, with over 5000 schools in England now enrolled…some 20% of our school children. The results have been tremendous, and the momentum continues.
