Linking Activity Spaces and Social Networks to Study Daily Mobility, Physical...INTERACT
By Lisa Marie Brunner
Social connectedness is associated with mobility and health outcomes, as social networks are an important determinant of environmental exposure. VERITAS (Visualization and Evaluation of Route Itineraries, Travel destinations and Activity Spaces) was used to analyze social and spatial indicators to explore the activity spaces of 145 cyclists in the city of Victoria. Activity spaces are connected to social dimensions and health-related outcomes, which can uncover relevant factors to consider in the observation of urban design for health, well-being, social connectedness, and social inequalities.
Connecting the social and spatial components enables research into the spatial dimension of social networks, the social dimension of activity space, and their interactions and effects on health.

RV 2015: Back to the Future: Considering Health (Again) in Project Developmen...Rail~Volution
Two centuries ago, the synergies between the development of cities and public health were evident -- even lifesaving: Better infrastructure prevented infectious diseases. Land use ordinances protected citizens from hazardous industrial exposures. During the 20th century, the disciplines drifted apart. Today health has, once again, become an extremely important element in building livable communities. How can you measure how your project impacts the health of a community? Health impact assessments (HIAs) are innovative tools. Learn how to incorporate an HIA into your existing decision-making processes, increase interdepartmental collaboration and strengthen community engagement initiatives. In addition, gain usable experience from two HIA case studies in Florida and Minnesota: a transit alternatives analysis and a station area plan.
Moderator: Thomas Waldron, Transit Market Sector Director, HDR, New York, New York
Lyssa Leitner, Transportation Planner, Washington County, Stillwater, Minnesota
Gabriella Arismendi, Transportation Planner, MetroPlan, Orlando, Florida

RV 2015: Integrating Health, Livable Communities and Transit: A How-To Discus...Rail~Volution
Where do wellness issues fit in the transit conversation? What is the link between how we build our cities and transportation networks, and the physical, social, mental and economic wellness of our communities? Participate in the discussion with health funders, community development professionals, health equity advocates and urban planners. Hear how they've leveraged new funding sources for critical investments. What are the politics, processes and mechanics of integrating health, wellness and health equity issues into the planning and design of livable communities? Learn new techniques and perspectives from health foundations, public policy advocates and urban designers and cities in the US (Phoenix, Dallas, Houston) and Canada.

Is your doctor keeping you sick? This is part 2 of a series about how the medical system is integrated to keep us sick and poor. What will be your choice for health?
Presentation to Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association 2011. Focusing on leading with a sense of purpose and defining actions in terms of core values of public service.
Margaret Gardner (Practical Action) - From Intermediate Technology to Technol...TheSchumacherInstitute
Poverty as described in ‘Small is Beautiful’ is still recognisable, E.F. Schumacher talks about a world where the ‘poor are getting poorer while the rich are getting richer’ where development co-operation primarily benefits the rich, where poor people struggle to find jobs, and flock into cities. Where science and technology has helped construct a system of production that ‘ravishes nature and a type of society that mutilates man’.
Practical Action was established by Fritz Schumacher to model a new form of development – one that was severely practical, that started with people and that used intermediate technology as a lever for change.
Margaret will talk about Practical Action’s experience, how for the last 50 years they have demonstrated in the Global South the success of many of Fritz’s ideas. She will also address current challenges - the impact of climate change and growing inequality. Practical Action is building a vision, on the shoulders of Fritz Schumacher, of a new approach to technology – one that uses technology to help end poverty and protect our planet – something they call Technology Justice.
Helen Browning (Soil Association) - From small acorns…how 5 schools and an am...TheSchumacherInstitute
E.F. Schumacher was President of the Soil Association from 1970–77. During this time he wrote an article for the Association’s Living Earth magazine, in which he passionately made the case for the practical application of economic and organic thinking into practice and lived experience. ‘Let us not defend a type of pristine virginity’, he noted in 1971, ‘to remain a little, esoteric splinter group, at a time when the whole world is crying out for precisely the kind of thinking the Soil Association has been engaged in for the past 25 years’.
It is in this spirit that the Food For Life Partnership was founded by the SA 10 years ago, a tiny pilot in 5 schools to see whether engaging children, their teachers and their school cooks in growing organic produce, visiting organic farms, and learning to prepare wonderful healthy food could transform their well being and sense of connecting with nature. From this ‘acorn’ a major initiative has developed, with over 5000 schools in England now enrolled…some 20% of our school children. The results have been tremendous, and the momentum continues.
Graham Randles (New Economics Foundation Consulting) - A Powerful VisionTheSchumacherInstitute
As well as being a visionary and a major inspiration for a generation of economic thinking, EF Schumacher was a great communicator. His ideas were at the same time practical, grounded in reality and appealing. For almost thirty years the New Economics Foundation has been applying and developing this thinking with some notable success. Yet in 2015, the challenges we face may seem to be bigger and more urgent than ever. To overcome these, we need to celebrate and learn from the changes to our economy and society we have already initiated and to deliver a new positive vision that can guide us, collectively, to create the good, fair and beautiful world that the next generation will want to live in.
Adrian Ramsay (Centre for Alternative Technology) - Thinking Globally, Acting...TheSchumacherInstitute
When the modern green movement was born in the mid-1970s, many activists and campaign groups, inspired by Schumacher and other influential figures, focused on the potential for self-sufficient lifestyles as a solution to the unsustainable use of the Earth’s resources. During the past 40 years the debate has moved towards asking how society as a whole can operate in a sustainable way focusing, for example, on linking large and small scale renewable technologies into the grid.
The evolution of CAT’s work is an example of this, with our Zero Carbon Britain research demonstrating how existing technology could meet the country’s needs with the political will to drive these changes at a national level. At the same time, there is increased interest in how individuals and communities can make a difference locally, as demonstrated by the Transition Towns and community power movements. With the crucial international climate talks in Paris fast approaching, to what extent should the green movement be focused on national targets and initiatives versus the promotion of bottom-up solutions? Or does the long-term slogan of the green movement of ‘Thinking Globally, Acting Locally’ remind us that we can combine the need to harness local solutions with a drive for national and international frameworks for restricting global temperature rise and protecting the Earth’s resources and biodiversity?
Adam Lent (Ashoka) - The Schumacher Contradiction - The battle between small ...TheSchumacherInstitute
E.F.Schumacher saw human scale technology as the key to a fairer, more innovative and fulfilled world. Since his death in 1977, technology has been transformed unleashing great waves of creativity and enterprise just as Schumacher foresaw. And yet the small is beautiful revolution for which he worked seems barely to have begun with big business, big government and the inequalities of wealth and power they represent still driving our world. Is this a sign of failure or is it a coming battle for the future? How can we speed up the transition to the world for which E.F. Schumacher strived?

8. The impact of teleworking
From Banister et al. (2007)
• Teleworking has increased 150%
• Mainly professional males (gender and social status)
• Longer commuting time/distance for teleworkers
• Unclear rebound effect but opportunities for reduced travel
and associated negative impacts
• Could encourage more dispersed living patterns?
