Dear Families:
Welcome to fifth grade! I am very excited about teaching 5th
grade this year. I am looking
forward to working with you and your child this year. I hope to make it an exciting and
memorable last year of elementary school for your child.
*Communication: Check agendas and email daily. If you send an email or leave a voice
message for the teacher, please allow 24 hours for a reply. I may also be texted at (904) 403-
3680. Texts will only be answered between the hours of 3:30 pm until 8:00 pm. I am unable to
answer texts during the day. You may now also chat with me via the Remind app during those
hours as well.
*Snacks: Students will be allowed to have an individually wrapped snack in Ms. Snyder’s
class as long as it does not become a distraction AND they clean up after themselves.
Students are also welcome to bring bottled water.
*Cupcakes: We all love cupcakes... However, the only time cupcakes are allowed is during
our lunch from 1:00 – 1:20. Parent assistance is welcome with passing them out. *Any
adult who is around students must be an approved volunteer. Please check with Mrs.
Tilley to see if you are on the approved list.*
*Volunteers: The best way that everyone can volunteer is to join the PTA for $7. My goal is to
be the first class to have 100% participation (this means 1 adult per 1 student). The class with
100% membership will earn a prize from PTA. Please let me know once you join.
If you would like to volunteer for the following, please email Ms. Snyder:
(**Note: You must be an approved volunteer in order to be around students; you can find an application on
Duval County's homepage.**)
1. Fieldtrips
2. PTA Activities (Carnival, Reading Celebration, Fundraisers, etc.)
3. Class Parties
4. Home Projects (cutting, stapling, posters, etc.)
5. Laminating and/or making copies
6. Classroom Help (bulletin boards, workstation activities, etc.)
Together Everyone Achieves More!

5 Be responsible and prepared!
Schedules:
Classes begin promptly at 8:30 daily. Resources this year will occur according to their
color rather than a specific day. All resources are daily from 8:45 until 9:30 daily. The
resources are scheduled as follows:
PE – Purple Day
Art – Orange Day
Music – Red Day
Media – Green Day
Computers – Blue Day
Lunch is daily from 1:00 until 1:30 pm.
Remind 101:
We are going to be using a wonderful resource this year to keep you informed of all of
the upcoming events this school year. That resource is called Remind. Remind is a safe
and secure way of communicating with you. It allows me to send text reminders of
important events. To participate all you need to do is text @2021c to (858) 914-4235.
You will be prompted to put in your name for my purposes only. Your number and
information are secure so you needn’t worry about unnecessary spam. Please take a
moment to join.
Reading Book Log:
Ms. Snyder will have weekly book logs available on her website as well as in the
classroom. I will also email copies to you. Students are expected to complete these
weekly but are welcome to turn them in more frequently. They are very short and do not
require extensive detail. Students are expected to read 25 books a year (1 book = 150
pages) in order to meet their goal. As students are assessed during the next few weeks,
they will be taking a test that will determine their Lexile level (or reading level). As soon

as I have those results, I will share them with you so that you may find texts that are on
your child’s level.
Grade Portal Change:
Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year all DCPS schools will be using the Focus
Gradebook/Grade Portal. The districts contract with OnCourse ends June 30th.
Beginning July 1, 2015, parents will no longer access their child’s information through the
OnCourse Grade Portal. In order for parents to create an account the school will need to
prepare accounts by downloading PG Approver software. Directions for parents are
posted on the DCPS Technology Service website at:
http://www.duvalschools,org/Page/14497. To create/register for an account within DCPS
parent portal at: https://acounts.public.duvalschools.org/enrollmetnwizard.aspx. Please
wait until after July 1, 2015 to set up your account.
Computer Programs:
Our district currently uses many computer programs to enhance instruction. The
programs that I will utilize include iReady, TenMarks, StudyIsland and Achieve 3000. As
soon as these programs, you will receive information on how your child may log in and use
them. They are all wonderful programs that are research based and proven to
substantially increase student performance. Once they are available, I would strongly
encourage you to allow your child to use them at home. I will also be providing several
days a week after school for student’s to stay after to use the computer. I will send
more details in few weeks.
