Philippine architecture is unique in that it reflects its cultural heritage
heritage and the demand to adapt to its environment. Surveying the
architectural styles in the country reveals varieties that range from traditional
Filipino dwelling, the bahay kubo, which is a small one- room hut built using
light woven materials, to modern and stylish architectural designs that you
usually see in urbanized areas. The architecture of the Philippines reflects its
history and tradition. Churches and mosque across the country as well as the
buildings in the metropolitan and rural areas have risen in response to the
growing
8. demands of the Filipinos. Moreover the country is home to the best-
preserved planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.
1. PABLO S. ANTONIO (1901 – 1975) Year of Conferment: 1976
Born at the turn of the century, national artist for architecture Pablo Sebero
Antonio pioneered modern Philippine architecture. His basic design is grounded
on simplicity, no clutter. The lines are clean and smooth, and where there are
curves, these are made integral to the structure. Pablo Jr. points out, “For our
father, every line must have a meaning, a purpose. For him, function comes
first before elegance or form. The other thing that characterizes
Antonio’s structure is the maximum use of natural light and cross
ventilation.
9. Antonio believes that buildings “should be planned with austerity in
mind and its stability forever as the aim of true architecture, that
buildings must be progressive, simple in design but dignified true to
a purpose without resorting to an applied set of aesthetics and
should eternally recreate truth.
Antonio’s major works include the following: Far Eastern University
Administration and Science buildings, Manila Polo Club, Ideal
Theater, Lyric Theater, Galaxy Theater Captain Luis Gonzaga
Building, Boulervard Alhambra (now Bel-Air)apartments, Ramon
Rocess Publications Building (now Guzman Institute of Electronics).
12. 2. LEANDRO V. LOCSIN (1928 -1994)
A man who believes that true Philippine architecture “is the product of
two great streams of culture, the oriental and the occidental to produce
a new object of profound harmony, “Leandro V. Locsin is the man
responsible for designing everything you see at CCP complex, the
Cultural Center of the Philippines, folk arts theatre, Philippine
International Convention Center, Philcite and Westin Hotel (now Sofitel
Philippine Plaza). Locsin’s largest single work is the Istana Nurul Iman,
the palace of the Sultan of Brunei, which has a floor area of 2.2 million
square feet. The CCP Complex itself is a virtual Locsin Complex with all
five buildings designed by him.
14. 3. JUAN F. NAKPIL (1899 – 1986) Year of Conferment: 1973
Architect, Civil Engineer, Teacher and Civic leader, is a pioneer and
innovator in Philippine Architecture. In essence, Nakpil’s greatest
contribution is his belief that there is such a thing as Philippine
Architecture, espousing architecture reflective of Philippine traditions
and culture. It is also largely due to his zealous representation and
efforts that private Filipino architects and engineers, law, are now able
to participate in the design and execution of government projects. He
designed the 1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar and
reconstructed the Quiapo Church in 1930. The additional dome and a
second belfry can be credited to this brilliant artist.
16. 4. ILDEFONSO P. SANTOS, JR. (1929 – 2014)
Year of Conferment: 2006
Ildefonso Perez Jr. is one of the most recognize landscape
architects in the country. Landscape Architecture enhances
outdoor public spaces, landmarks, and structures by
contouring the environment. Some of his famous works
include Paco Park, Tagaytay Highlands Resort, Mt. Malarayat
Golf and Country Club in Lipa.
17. 5. Jose Maria Zaragoza (1912-1994)
Year of Conferment: 2014
He is an architecture graduate from University of Santo Tomas. He is
the country’s 82nd licensed architect. He work’s to have advanced the
progressive ideas of modernism in rebuilding the Philippines from the
the ashes of war in the mid-20th century.His works include St. John
Bosco Parish in Makati City, Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City and
the, National Shrine of Miraculous Medal, Meralco Building, Green
Hills Shopping Center and the reconstructing of Quiapo Church
interior.
