Anthropology is a widely applicable discipline. It plays a role in every element of human society. Anthropology offers a perspective or explanation to the phenomena of human science (Eriksen, 2010). It explores the formation of culture and the influence of diverse factors on the formation of behavior. It considers people to be a product of associations within defined societies and relationships with the surroundings. The significance of relationships to social configuration is diverse and relevant to any human lifestyle issue. Sources of livelihood and religion emerge as crucial factors in the exploration of anthropology. The discipline offers insight into how moral codes are developed and the factors that influence the process of life. Human development and forging of individualism traits such as sexuality form another part of the discipline. People are viewed as products of processes influenced by environment but considered to possess some level of autonomous growth. Another dimension of the discipline is concerned with health and referred to as medical anthropology.

(Discussion 1) Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health” journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research. From my understanding of the journal for this week, the social theory was how some ones health can be effected with or with out social relations. From the research it touches on how a person or people can be happy and also live longer with better health, when practicing social relationships. The article discuss how the theory of social relationships can make people stringer and healthier. It was used to support the research because the researchers conducted studies not only on humans but animals as well to prove this theory. Choose one of the quantitative research results presented in the article; describe the evidence presented and indicate which variables of the experiment were highlighted. The quantitative research results that I choose from the article was when the researchers were discovering that social relationships can cause a risk factors of mortality, and probably morbidity, from a wide range of diseases. From the readings the researchers shown that they used criteria include strength and consistencies of statistical association across a wide range of studies an cause and effect with animals and humans. An experiment of behavior pattern as an risk factor for (type A) heart disease. 1964 Surgeon general had evidence that social relationship and health increased that cigarette smoking was a cause or risk factor for mortality a range of disease. These factors are important because the researchers seen that there is less association of social relationships when it comes to smoking, because smoking is also linked to cancer. I believe that modern social media sites support the claims that social variables determine both health and the nature of social relationships, both link social relationship to health. Modern social media is where you can give updates on thoughts and at one point it was some where you can express freedom of speech. 1 Introduction: The Multicultural Person Both the nature of what we take to be a self and its expression are inherently cultural (Bhatia & Stam, 2005, p. 419). Each individual’s many aspects are not fragmented and distanced from one another or hierarchically ordered on behalf of a ruling center but remain in full interconnectedness and communication (Sampson, 1985, p. 1209). There are a great variety of categories to which we simultaneously belong … Belonging to each one of the membership groups can be quite important, depending on the particular context … the importance of one identity need not obliterate the importance of others (Sen, 2006, p. 19). Each of us is a multicultural human being. This simple and basic proposition, most descriptive of those of us who live in contemporary heterogeneous societies, constitutes the basic (though complex) theme of this book. Within its pages the reader will find attempts to explain, illustrate and argue for the value of this assertion. A major stimulus for pursuit of this is the belief that the study and understanding of behavior, when guided by the premise of individual multiculturalism, will increase the authenticity of our knowledge and the reliability of our predictions. This, in turn, should enhance the relevance and efficacy of the applications of our work to significant life situations – in the interest of advancing human welfare. Multicultural Psychology and Cross-Cultural Psychology This book needs to be distinguished from those that are in the tradition of cross-cultural psychology or mainstream multicultural psychology. The latter, as defined by Mio, Barker-Hackett, and Tumambing (2006, p. 32) “is the systematic study of all aspects of human behavior as it occurs in settings where people of different backgrounds encounter one another.” Multicultural psychologists prefer a salad bowl rather than a melting pot as metaphorical image, viewing the United States, for example, as a society in which groups maintain their distinctiveness (Moodley & Curling, 2006). They stress and argue for the necessary development of multicultural competence by psychologists and others. Such competence includes understanding of your own culture, respect for other cultures, and acquiring appropriate culturally sensitive interpersonal skills. To this end, professional guidelines have been proposed (and adopted) for education, training, and practice. Such guidelines are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) for practice with persons of color (APA, 2003), practice with sexual minorities (APA, 2000), and practice with girls and women (APA, 2007). The emphases in cross-cultural psychology are two-fold: first, to understand and appreciate the relationships among cultural factors and human functioning (Wallace, 2006); and second, to compare world cultures as well as subcultures within a single society. David G. Savage, Times Staff Writer Justice Clarence Thomas may be silent in the Supreme Court during public arguments, but he is not shy about making bold pronounc ements in written opinions. His latest challenge to conventional wisdom came this week in the Pledge of Allegiance case, when he opined that the Constitution protected a state's right to recognize an official church. Almost everyone has assumed that the opposite is true. It is not the first time Thomas has tried to turn the standard thinking on its head when it comes to understanding key parts of the U.S. Constitution. He has done so by focusing on the words and history of the document as it was written in 1787. "He likes to say we should look at this afresh. Our law is muddled, and we should rethink it," Yale Law School professor Akhil Amar said admir ingly of Thomas. But the conseque nces o f his "re thinking" co uld be far-re aching. For example, Thomas has argued that the word "commerce" in the Constitution should be understood as it was in the 18th century: the movement of goods across state lines. Under this view, the states could not erect tariffs or other barriers to the free flow of goods. In the 20th century, however, the Supreme Court adopted a much broader view of commerce, relying on that definition to uphold federal laws that set minimum wages, prohibited discrimination in the workplace, protected the environment or regulat ed the manufac ture of products, in cluding autos and drugs. In a separate 1995 opinion, Thomas said that this broad view conflicted with the Constitution and should be reconsidered. If his colleagues ever agree, many of today's workplace laws would be struck down. Soon after joining the court in 1991, Thomas wrote that the word "punishment" in the Constitution restricted only "judges, not jailers." The high court had adopted a broader view of the ban on "cruel and unusual punishment" in the 1970s and protected prisoners from being subjected to needlessly cruel treatment. Contrarily, a close look at the scandal and reasons for its existence went far away from the bank key goal.
