Why a strong resume is important
The interviewer’s #1 question:
Can you add value to the business?
Downstream implications of an interviewer’s psychology
The goal of the interview process is to de-risk the
chance of hiring a candidate who is a false positive
De-Risking

Your Resume Demonstrates That Outcome
1 You have solved similar business
problems
Relevant Experience
2 You ramp up quickly on new problems Track Record
3 You love to learn new things, but
demonstrate specific spikes
Subject Matter Expertise
Tactical considerations
Your resume should:
1. Contain your contact details (email and phone number at minimum)
2. Be a page for each decade of experience
3. Consist of at least an experience and education section (other sections like
volunteering, skills etc. are nice to have, but optional in my opinion)
4. Convey impact as opposed to responsibilities
5. Always be honest
Impact > Responsibilities
A mediocre resume is a laundry list of responsibilities. A great resume is one
that quickly and consistently delivers signals of impact.
Here are two types of impact worth highlighting:
Impact # Name Examples
1 Positive customer impact Customer satisfaction (net promoter scores),
retention, acquisition, activation, adoption, etc.
2 Positive business impact Revenue, cost savings, time savings (can be
extrapolated to costs), etc.
Talk the Talk
A resume must speak the interviewer’s language. A good exercise is to read
through several PM job descriptions, and leverage the verbs in the description
to mirror your past experience.
Some examples include:
● Shipped X product
● Shipped X feature
● Published roadmap
● Defined requirements
● Ran A/B test
● Collaborated with Y function (eg. legal, marketing, data engineering etc.)
Quantify Your Impact
Measuring impact is gold on a resume because it helps the interviewer answer
the question “why was this important for the business?”
Here are some [fictional] pre-post examples of quantifying impact on a
resume:
Pre Post
Conducted 10 customer interviews Lifted annual revenue by 20% by conducting 10
interviews for the app’s target persona
(American mothers, age 35-50)
Increased sales Increased sales by 40% QoQ by shipping a
customer chat feature
Redesigned core app experience Drove 35% increase in D30 retention by
redesigning core app experience
Distribution Channels
To get the interviewer’s eyes on your resume, you ought to tap into an effective
distribution channel. Here’s what I gleaned:
Referral >> Applying through in-house recruiter > Applying through
headhunter/third party recruiter >> Applying online
The two things to keep in mind during a referral are:
1. How well this person knows you (former colleague vs. LinkedIn stranger)
2. How hard this person is willing to go to bat for you (there’s often a lot of
backchanneling involved in the recruiting process)
Personally, I’ve found that getting referrals from former colleagues or fellow Johns
Hopkins alumni have been the most powerful levers for getting my resume in the
pipeline.

  • 8. Why a strong resume is important The interviewer’s #1 question: Can you add value to the business?
  • 9. Downstream implications of an interviewer’s psychology The goal of the interview process is to de-risk the chance of hiring a candidate who is a false positive De-Risking Strategy # Your Resume Demonstrates That Outcome 1 You have solved similar business problems Relevant Experience 2 You ramp up quickly on new problems Track Record 3 You love to learn new things, but demonstrate specific spikes Subject Matter Expertise
  • 10. Tactical considerations Your resume should: 1. Contain your contact details (email and phone number at minimum) 2. Be a page for each decade of experience 3. Consist of at least an experience and education section (other sections like volunteering, skills etc. are nice to have, but optional in my opinion) 4. Convey impact as opposed to responsibilities 5. Always be honest
  • 11. Impact > Responsibilities A mediocre resume is a laundry list of responsibilities. A great resume is one that quickly and consistently delivers signals of impact. Here are two types of impact worth highlighting: Impact # Name Examples 1 Positive customer impact Customer satisfaction (net promoter scores), retention, acquisition, activation, adoption, etc. 2 Positive business impact Revenue, cost savings, time savings (can be extrapolated to costs), etc.
  • 12. Talk the Talk A resume must speak the interviewer’s language. A good exercise is to read through several PM job descriptions, and leverage the verbs in the description to mirror your past experience. Some examples include: ● Shipped X product ● Shipped X feature ● Published roadmap ● Defined requirements ● Ran A/B test ● Collaborated with Y function (eg. legal, marketing, data engineering etc.)
  • 13. Quantify Your Impact Measuring impact is gold on a resume because it helps the interviewer answer the question “why was this important for the business?” Here are some [fictional] pre-post examples of quantifying impact on a resume: Pre Post Conducted 10 customer interviews Lifted annual revenue by 20% by conducting 10 interviews for the app’s target persona (American mothers, age 35-50) Increased sales Increased sales by 40% QoQ by shipping a customer chat feature Redesigned core app experience Drove 35% increase in D30 retention by redesigning core app experience
  • 14. Distribution Channels To get the interviewer’s eyes on your resume, you ought to tap into an effective distribution channel. Here’s what I gleaned: Referral >> Applying through in-house recruiter > Applying through headhunter/third party recruiter >> Applying online The two things to keep in mind during a referral are: 1. How well this person knows you (former colleague vs. LinkedIn stranger) 2. How hard this person is willing to go to bat for you (there’s often a lot of backchanneling involved in the recruiting process) Personally, I’ve found that getting referrals from former colleagues or fellow Johns Hopkins alumni have been the most powerful levers for getting my resume in the pipeline.
