clicking on a contact;
– Lync server side conferencing: lets users drag and drop Lync contacts from
their snom desktop phone into the Lync 2013 client for conference calls;
– Calendar integration: gives users access to their Exchange calendars on their
phone’s display.

16. FAIRWARNING: IFYOU ARE OFFENDED BY
REALWORLD EXPERIENCE, EXIT NOW
This presentation is not be glitzy marketing, but real world experience
It will include the good, the not-so-good and the bad.
But most importantly how to make Lync,Voice & IP phone implementation
succeed.
17. DEVICE SELECTION:
NOT ALL LYNC IP PHONES ARE CREATED EQUAL
Lync Optimized (Lync Phone Edition “Aries” versus Lync Qualified versus USB
have considerably different use cases and need to carefully chosen
In many information worker scenarios (engineering/CPA/consulting) Lync
Phone Edition is the default, but some scenario demand different devices
A LyncVoice implementation can FAIL due to improper endpoint selection
For ourVoice implementation we schedule a meeting to discuss endpoints in
person and in detail (with IP Phones in hand to review)
18. CLASSES OF LYNC IP PHONES:
Lync Phone Edition “Aries”
(snom, Polycom, Aastra/Mitel)
LyncQualified
(snom, PolycomVVX,Audiocodes)
Lync 2013 Mobile Powered?
Future?Will Microsoft bless?
19. STARTWITH LYNC PHONE EDITION “ARIES”
Why?
Hardened Firmware
Simpler implementation
Most fully integrated to Lync 2013 client (at this time)
More integrated management/reporting experience
More complete line of phone (for information worker at least)
IW desk,Wall phone, conference w/ some training
But be aware of limitations as well, Next slides!
And all of the above is “at this time”, Lync Qualified keeps moving
and seems to be where the “innovation”/”progress” is
20. LYNC PHONE EDITION “ARIES”
FIELD EXPERIENCE / LIMITATIONS
Transfer experience requires 7-10 button presses
2nd Incoming Call will “interrupt” (take the attention away from what you are doing
2nd incoming call (call waiting) “beep beep” volume and on/off is not configuration
When dialing/calling other don’t see your presence as “In a Call” till the call is
connected
Users coming from PBX:You don’t see when phone is ringing, just when in a call
No 1 Button “Buddy” or overhead paging buttons (no hard buttons)
Does not have Intercom (phone to phone 2 way audio without called party needing
to pickup)
21. LYNC PHONE EDITION “ARIES”
FIELD EXPERIENCE / LIMITATIONS
Consult transfer requires the user to not hang up till transfer is complete
When answering Lync Response Group calls there is a delay before user can start
speaking
Does not have Safe Transfer Capability: http://windowspbx.blogspot.com/2013/03/q-
about-microsoft-lync-safe-transfer.html
Does not support Bluetooth or USB headsets
If you are used to PBX IP Phone configuration -Very limited configuration & No
centralized IP phone user settings control (ringer volume, colors, etc)
PC connected to the “PC Port” (using embedded LPE switch) will only connect to
default VLAN.The embedded switch will not passVLAN tags through the switch to
the PC (possible challenge inVirtualization)
Not supported with virtualization (use a headset)

23. LYNC QUALIFIED FIELD EXPERIENCE
Will be more costly to implement just because there are more settings
Firmware is not as “settled/hardened” as Lync Phone Edition so make sure your
scenario is tested. (example:VVX doesn’t support Exchange Online voicemail,
snom UC Edition voicemail option doesn’t show if you don’t log in via Lync 2013
client)
Settings configuration is not as integrated as Lync Phone Edition (exception:
snom UC Edition)
Not all vendors’ Lync Qualified models are equal: snom 7xx UC Edition (vs
3xx/8xx) and PolycomVVX (vs older SoundPoint)

27. OFFICE 365 AND IP P AND IP DESK PHONES
Only Lync Phone Edition “Aries” IP desk phone devices are currently listed as
supported with Office 365
Just for clarification: Office 365 does not support PSTN calling at this time (but
has been announced as coming in the future)
Which is to say: At this time Office 365 is not a PBX/Voice solution replacement.
There are various vendors who are noting they can “Voice Enable” Office 365.
Generally mean they can move the Lync Online workload to their own (non-
Office365) Hosted Lync solution or on-prem appliance that supportsVoice
features and may integrate to Office 365 ExchangeOnline as voicemail.
Independent Lync hosting vendors may support IP Phones of their choice
separate from Office 365.
Note:To keep things confusing- Lync Hosting Pack (LHPv2) ONLY supports
28. INFRASTRUCTURE: NETWORK
Voice will find every problem in your network
Avoid failure and find it before your Lync Ent.Voice does!

us/download/details.aspx?id=36819
29. INFRASTRUCTURE: LYNC QUALIFIED WILL
REQUIRE PROVISIONING SERVER(S) (EXCEPT
SNOM)
Remember: If implementing Lync Qualified devices (in anything other than
smallest lab test environment) you will want a provisioning server
To quote “it is basically just a centrally-accessible file store which contains certain files
that the devices are programmed to look for”
More specifically a FTP,TFTP, HTTP or HTTPS server
Excellent Polycom UCS article: http://blog.schertz.name/2013/05/provisioning-polycom-
sip-phones/
30. INFRASTRUCTURE: DHCP FOR PIN SIGNIN
If you are using PIN Sign-in (logging in on IP phones with extension & pin) you
will need some DHCP Options configured in your DHCP server
Option 43 – Certificate Server Provisioning URL
Option 120 - SIP Server
Just be aware your DHCP Server people will need to configure these options
31. IMPLEMENTATION: SNOM UC EDITION
SETTINGSVIA CSCLIENTPOLICYENTRY
csClientPolicyEntry allows you to use csClientPolicy’s to send vendor specific
devices settings to snom UC Edition devices. This means that using totally
native Lync and powershell you can provision vendor specific settings inside
and outside your Lync Edge. No additional provisioning servers required.
More details
http://windowspbx.blogspot.com/2013/05/using-lync-server-csclientpolicyentry.html
32. IMPLEMENTATION: SNOM UC EDITION
SETTINGSVIA CSCLIENTPOLICYENTRY
Find setting (Settings screen on snom UC Edition web UI)
answer_after_policy
Prefix with “snom_”
snom_answer_after_policy
Now using standard Lync Powershell we can push this (or any) snom setting
$x = New-CsClientPolicyEntry –Name snom_answer_after_policy -Value always
Set-CsClientPolicy –Identity Global –PolicyEntry @{Add=$x}
To test if you setting was success run:
Get-CsClientPolicy -Identity Global

35. IMPLEMENTATION: HOW MUCHTIMETO
PLACEAN IP PHONE?
Lync Phone Edition: 15-30 minutes
This is removing old phone to staging area
Placing & connecting new Lync Phone
Providing initial hand holding
15min is best case, 30min depending on how much hand holding
Lync QualifiedWill Be More
More options and twiddlies
Buttons/Templates/etc
Settings that can be tweaked

There are to many slides. I budget 11/2 to 2 minutes per slide. This presentation will take closer to 40 minutes or if left as is will seem rushed. 16 to 17 slides would be better.

My suggestion is to start with Lync Phone Edition Aries
So we noted that Lync phones should start with a review of Lync Phone Edition and if users cannot accept limitations/functionality then move to Lync Qualified IP devices
Almost every limitation we noted about LPE is addressed by Lync Qualified devices
Each vendor brings its value to their devices. Snom has a lot of features and bar none best management via powershell functionality. Polycom brings very trusted name in the Lync eco system, multimedia devices and expansion module enabled and Audiocodes brings 1 stop and desi-less (label less).
Some over arching guidiance. Very general.
Shared Line appearance: In Lync there is shared Boss/Admin “user based” but not the concept of “line based” press a button and tell others “pickup line 3” for example.
Call Park - simply
Of course your Lync Admin will need to enable Lync users for Lync Ent. Voice and give extension #’s, etc, but we are going to focus on the IP phone aspect
This call is a PSTN to IP phone so there are some “Caller” statistics coming from Mediation server.
