This document provides instructions for examining key art and literary works from the Gilded Age and how they affected American society during that time period in the late 19th century. Students are asked to form groups with one critic focusing on literature and one on art. They will research prominent authors, novels, poets, paintings and artistic styles from this era. Their task is to compile this information into a 4+ page report or create a PowerPoint presentation analyzing how art and literature reflected and influenced Gilded Age culture. Questions are provided to guide the students' research into dominant authors, folk heroes, influential novels, prominent poets, popular artistic styles and the role of patrons in beautifying American cities during this period.

An analysis of the strategies and practices of Brazilian privately-owned banks to manage climate change challenges.
This study is aimed at making a diagnosis and a gap analysis of the practices of leading Brazilian privately-owned banks to reduce the climate impact of their operations and to promote a low-carbon economy. This study complements the previous one, ‘Brazilian State-owned Banks and Climate Change - An analysis of the strategies and practices of brazilian state-owned banks and regional funds to manage climate change challenges,’ published in 2010. The two studies provide an overview of strategies and practices adopted by the Brazilian financial sector in relation to climate issues. It is expected that these results may help to enhance the strategies of the institutions, as well as develop public policies aimed at mitigating and adapting climate change.

Discussion 7.1 Medieval art vs. Byzantine artYou are an art.docxelinoraudley582231
Discussion 7.1: Medieval art vs. Byzantine art
You are an artist living in Western Europe between the 6th and 11th centuries and you are concerned that your work is not being adequately appreciated by a group of hoity-toity art critics from Constantinople. Select two specific examples of early Medieval art and defend these against the insults of the Byzantine critics who state that your work “…doesn’t present a naturalistic view of the body…” or “…was not created with an understanding of Greek and Roman forms…”. Explain the reasons why your work should be regarded as impressive by explaining the technique, needs of the patron, or underlying artistic qualities of your artwork to these critics. Make sure to clearly articulate what makes your art wonderful and awe-inspiring by providing specific examples and details drawn from what you know of this period and the art you have selected.Discussion 7.2: Churches in your pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela
You are now playing the part of an early Pilgrim traveling to Santiago de Compostela (the most important pilgrimage destination during the Romanesque period after Jerusalem). Using the map on page 335 of Gardner’s text, identify two churches that you’ll visit along the way and discuss the art and architecture and how these speak to or connect with you as a religious pilgrim on a long and dangerous journey.
Discussion 7.3: Taoist notions of landscape
The reading “Buddhist and Taoist influences on Chinese Landscape Painting” discusses some correspondences between Chinese philosophical and religious thought and the idea of landscape that emerge in China during the Song period. Discuss what landscape means when viewed through the Taoist notions discussed in the reading and then examine and interpret examples of Song landscapes presented in Gardner’s text.
Discussion 8.1: Gothic architectural components
In The Gothic Enterprise, Robert Scott discusses various philosophical, scientific, and religious ideas that were embedded within Gothic Cathedral construction. Identify and discuss two specific ideas and their architectural implementation. In the process of discussing these components make sure to identify the specific buildings that you have identified as examples of these ideas and the way in which these ideas were embedded within the structures.
Discussion 8.2: Changing styles in period art
We have seen the representation of the human form change throughout the various periods that were examined this semester. In the late Byzantine and Gothic art that you examined this week, we see the movement to styles that will set the stage for what we see in the Renaissance period. Discuss the manner of representation that we see in the presentation of figural form in this period. How has it changed from what we examined in the Medieval and Romanesque art that we viewed last week?
Discussion 8.3: Art from the Americas
The art of the Americas differs from much of what we discussed this semester. Select .

Please read Chapters 12and 13 and look carefully at the illustrations. Please note that there was a significant difference between the art of Northern Europe and Southern Europe during this time. The term Renaissance means a renewal or a rebirth--in this context of the styles and ideas of the Greek and Roman (Classical) past. While both areas continued to use Christian themes, the style, or the manner in which the images are put together and presented to the viewer, differed substantially from North to South. The North continued to be quite medieval or Gothic in styles, while the South (chiefly Italy), relied heavily on its Classical (Greek and Roman) past. During this period, you will see that the human figure, especially the nude, in an echo of the Classical past, appears again in Italy. The North will come to admire and to use the nude only with Albrecht Duerer, a major German artist of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. He will be the first Northern artist to participate in the developing humanist and classical interests of Italy. It is with this artist that the North enters into the "spirit" and the subject matter of the Italian form of the Renaissance.
Describe the development of the Northern Renaissance images with respect to the use of very detailed, ordinary objects symbolic of religious ideas. Contrast that with the Classicism of the Italian works.
Please address, briefly, the role of the artist's patron in the Italian Renaissance.

Question 2
Read Chapters 15-17 and look carefully at the illustrations. In this section of the text, you will become acquainted with art of the Americas and Africa and the Neo-Classical, Romantic and Realist styles of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth-century European works. The pace of stylistic change will begin to keep up with the faster pace of life. Here you will look at the remnants of the Classical world in the Neo-Classical (or new classical) examples, which are sometime pitted against the more intuitive, less doctrinaire works of the Romantic artists. Here, too, you will begin to look at the American works, drawn from European ideas and styles, but adapted for a new country and a new need for art. Sometimes the styles or labels of the categories of art will become blurred, making absolutes difficult to determine. I am sure that, by now, you will say, "But all periods are divergent; all periods have variants which make labels and categories uncertain." And, you will be correct. The momentum for change and for the existence of multiple ideas and styles within a specific place and time merely increases and the changes seem to be more drastic. Introduction to Visual Arts Frank Lloyd Wright’s artworks .docxnormanibarber20063
Introduction to Visual Arts: Frank Lloyd Wright’s artworks
Summary
It is true that different artists have a different taste which determines certain characteristics of artwork of particular artist (Harris, 2007). In this paper, I will analyze and discuss at the work of an American artist called Frank Lloyd Wright. Lloyd was an architect and was born in the year 1867 and made his great contribution in developing the organic and distinctly American architectural style (Wright, 2010). Frank Lloyd designed many iconic and commercial buildings.
This paper will thus discuss two specific artworks of Frank Lloyd Wright which made great impressions during his time. These artworks are Falling water House and Guggenheim of New York. The Guggenheim was to be a museum in New York that embodied Lloyd’s attempt to solidify the natural plasticity of the organic bodies in architecture (Frank, 2013). The corridors were interdependent sections but divided like the way the membranes in citrus fruits. Its spiral design looked like nautilus shell that had continuous spaces curving freely on each another (Levine, 1997). The medium is a print of B&W photograph, design, and drawing which was made in the year 1945.
Next will be his artwork called the Falling water artwork of which chosen the subject was used to show a high level of innovation that put harmony in environment and humanity (Hess, 2005). The medium is also print photograph, design, and drawing and the period was the years of 1936 to 1938. These two artworks developed American architecture through innovative and environmentally friendly ways (Fowler & Wright, 2002).
Annotated Bibliography
Fowler, P., & Wright, F. L. (2002). Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist. New York: Pomegranate.
This publication offers an informative details in the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. It explains many of Wright's artworks and buildings that were characterized by glass windows. I have found this book as very useful as it will help in explaining why the artist designed the Falling Water and the Guggenheim Museum through organic architecture. Thus, it will help to make informed critic off the work of this artist.
Frank, L. W. (2013). Frank Lloyd Wright Designs. New York: Pomegranate Communications.
This book by Frank Lloyd Wright is a useful digital print that gives the readers a good chance to explore the organic artworks as the great American development in the commercial artworks. This book has complete prints of Frank’s work which will enable me to discuss and critic the two selected artworks. I find it very useful as it flows chronologically with ideas or Wright’s work which will provide valuable contextual information for the subject.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
