In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

192/14 South Marston Parish Council Planning Sub Committee
Plans received to 12th
December 2014:
1. S/14/1893RM
Proposal: Erection of a link building, provision of 84 additional car parking spaces and associated works.
Location: Aldi Stores Ltd. Scimitar Way, South Marston Industrial Estate, Swindon, SN3 4AL
Comments:
Would hard standing for parking result in an increased flood risk downstream?
The application fails to demonstrate how the application, with 84 additional parking spaces, aligns with
and contributes to the existing Aldi Travel Plan. This information is requested before any permissions are
granted.
2. S/14/1948
Proposal: Installation of ground mounted solar panels
Location: Carpenters Arms, Old Vicarage Lane, South Marston, SN3 4AL
Comments:
How will this array be connected to the grid – under or over ground?
Comment only: Contrary to the Statements at Paragraph 4 of the covering letter, the installation of the
Solar PV array will not have local environmental benefit. The statement that these local environmental
benefits will continue if the array is moved or taken down is also misleading.
.
3. S/OUT/14/0253/JABU (Revised)
Proposal: Outline application for employment development including B1b (research and development/light
industrial), B1c (light industrial), B2 (general industrial) and B8 (warehouse and distribution), new
landscaping and junction to A420 (means of access not reserved)
Location: Eastern Villages South, Land at and to the South of A420 (Great Stall Middle), Swindon
Comments:
Reduced heights of buildings and archaeological preservation area is welcome. Otherwise, our objection
to the previous versions of the site application based on the proposed A420 improvements and the
flooding analysis, still stands.

AGENDA ITEM 8: VILLAGE (SMPCEWG PROGRESS REPORT 16 DECEMBER 2014
The need to inform residents about the lack of progress with expansion matters was covered by the entry in the parish
council newsletter, distributed at the end of November.
There appears to be some movement this month.
Walsingham Planning have finally submitted their planning applications for Crown Timber and Thornhill Industrial Estate.
Although the applications have planning numbers S/OUT/14/2058 and 2059 respectively, they are not yet up on the
SBC website, so they are presumably undergoing validation at SBC. However, Walsingham Planning have kindly
supplied us with a CD for our consideration.
Paul Cripps, owner of the Mercure Hotel has appointed a new design company to progress proposals for his site. He
has requested to meet the Chair of the Parish Council and the Chair of the Expansion Working Group and this is booked
for 12 January. The purpose of the meeting is to enable the design company representative to be brought up to date
with relevant planning matters.
HHL has been in contact with Colin McEwen in respect of their potential funding of the design work for the 20mph zone,
and proposed that, at some stage, a further meeting with the Council/Working Group would be useful.
SBC have offered us the first of what are planned as a series of bi-monthly meetings with the village. All members of
the Parish Council and the Expansion Working Group are invited, but Borough Councillors will not be there – they will
be included in later meetings. The date and time have now been fixed:
6pm on the 19th
January in Committee Room 1 at the Civic Offices
The purpose of the first meeting is to discuss progress and present their proposals for a masterplan of the development
south of the A420.
