This is a letter I wrote to the mayor of Athens-Clarke County. I conducted research on the quality of the water in Lake Herrick through a series of tests, analyzed the quality based on my results, and proposed solutions for improvements to the mayor.

Historically, the South Platte River in Colorado has experienced substantial inter-annual flow variability, but due to water management over the last century, there has been a parallel rise in ground and surface water level consistency. This is problematic for the dominant riparian vegetation of the region, the disturbance-dependent cottonwood, which relies on frequent flood events to clear vegetation to allow for the growth of new trees along the riverbank. Through this research, we attempt to understand the patterns and dynamics of the South Platte River’s riparian vegetation to aid resource management. This research focuses on channel migration dynamics and how these impact adjacent riparian vegetation. To study this, we digitized riparian vegetation using orthophotos at roughly decade increments for a 30 km section of the South Platte in Weld and Morgan counties. We measured changes to riparian vegetation composition and channel locations. Preliminary results show that from 1999 to 2006, a period of overall low flow and drought conditions, this section of river experienced a narrowing of the active channel by 11%. This narrowing was accompanied by an expansion of forest, riparian shrub, and herbaceous vegetation. From 2006 to 2015, a period of time that included high flows and two major flood events, we observed channel expansion of 24%. This was accompanied by decreases in forests, riparian shrubs, and herbaceous cover.

Solar ghosts: Weighing the evidence for sunspot cycles in fossil trees
In their study of tree rings from the Chemnitz Fossil Forest (Germany), Luthardt and Rößler (2017) claim to identify a regular near-11-yr cyclicity in growth, and present that pattern as evidence of the influence of the Schwabe solar cycle (Usokin and Mursula, 2003) on climate and forest productivity during the early Permian. If correctly interpreted, these fossil tree rings would indicate the sunspot cycle was the dominant influence on interannual variability in Earth’s climate during this period and that it has been a consistent aspect of our Sun’s behavior for at least the past 300 m.y. We argue the fossil tree-ring record from Chemnitz does not constitute reliable evidence of solar activity during the Permian because the individual tree-ring sequences are not correctly aligned (dendrochronologically dated) and, as a result, the mean ring-width composite is not a meaningful estimate of year-to-year variations in tree growth in this ancient forest.

This master's thesis examined methanogens and methane-oxidizing bacteria in 12 streams in North Carolina's piedmont region, including forested streams, urban unrestored streams, and urban restored streams. Water and sediment samples were collected seasonally from the streams and analyzed using real-time PCR to determine abundances of methanogens and methanotrophs. There were significant differences found in methanogen DNA abundance between stream types in late fall and methanotroph DNA abundance in late summer, which may be explained by differences in the timing and magnitude of organic and inorganic material inputs to the forested versus urban streams.

This study assessed the impact of urban intensification on water quality and microbial communities in canals in Suzhou, China. Samples were taken from sites with high, medium, and low population densities in both summer and spring. Nutrient levels, leaf litter breakdown, and microbial abundance varied between intensity areas and seasons. Microbial communities showed elevated nutrients and microbial levels in highly urbanized sites. Organic matter broke down faster in summer. Sequencing of microbial communities is ongoing but results so far indicate urbanization alters water quality and microbes.
Internship Crystal Springs Preserve
Crystal Springs Preserve is a 525 acre nature preserve dedicated to environmental education. It hosts about 100 students per day free of charge and has facilities like a laboratory, butterfly garden, and access to a major freshwater spring. Students from the preserve conducted a study of water quality and wildlife along the Hillsborough River from its source to where it reaches the sea. Their chemical analysis found generally good water quality throughout the river, though dissolved oxygen levels decreased in areas with more development and stormwater runoff. While the upper parts of the river seemed best managed, growth and development pose risks to water quality that education and conservation programs are working to address.
Across the Watershed Spring 2016 - LB bacteria article
This document summarizes the Great Swamp Watershed Association's efforts to improve water quality in Loantaka Brook in Morris County, New Jersey. It describes how high levels of E. coli bacteria were found in the brook, indicating fecal pollution. GSWA investigated upstream and traced the source to a large pipe draining a housing development. Additional surveying is still needed to increase data confidence, as 17 new species were recorded and some species remain anecdotally observed only. In their study of tree rings from the Chemnitz Fossil Forest (Germany), Luthardt and Rößler (2017) claim to identify a regular near-11-yr cyclicity in growth, and present that pattern as evidence of the influence of the Schwabe solar cycle (Usokin and Mursula, 2003) on climate and forest productivity during the early Permian. If correctly interpreted, these fossil tree rings would indicate the sunspot cycle was the dominant influence on interannual variability in Earth’s climate during this period and that it has been a consistent aspect of our Sun’s behavior for at least the past 300 m.y. We argue the fossil tree-ring record from Chemnitz does not constitute reliable evidence of solar activity during the Permian because the individual tree-ring sequences are not correctly aligned (dendrochronologically dated) and, as a result, the mean ring-width composite is not a meaningful estimate of year-to-year variations in tree growth in this ancient forest.

This master's thesis examined methanogens and methane-oxidizing bacteria in 12 streams in North Carolina's piedmont region, including forested streams, urban unrestored streams, and urban restored streams. Water and sediment samples were collected seasonally from the streams and analyzed using real-time PCR to determine abundances of methanogens and methanotrophs. There were significant differences found in methanogen DNA abundance between stream types in late fall and methanotroph DNA abundance in late summer, which may be explained by differences in the timing and magnitude of organic and inorganic material inputs to the forested versus urban streams.

This study assessed the impact of urban intensification on water quality and microbial communities in canals in Suzhou, China. Samples were taken from sites with high, medium, and low population densities in both summer and spring. Nutrient levels, leaf litter breakdown, and microbial abundance varied between intensity areas and seasons. Microbial communities showed elevated nutrients and microbial levels in highly urbanized sites. Organic matter broke down faster in summer. Sequencing of microbial communities is ongoing but results so far indicate urbanization alters water quality and microbes.

Two sites along waterways in Bloomington, Indiana were tested on two occasions to analyze water quality. Physical, chemical, and biological indicators were used to test the Jordan River on campus and Cascades River northwest of campus. The data showed that water quality at both sites was healthy and safe, with proper chemical levels and biological presence. Some compounds were detected using mass spectrometry but below levels of concern. The study concluded that the natural water quality in the area is safe for all living organisms.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Water Quality Letter
- 1. March 17, 2017 Baylee Smith 515 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30605 Mayor Nancy Denson 301 College Ave. Suite 300 Athens, GA 30601 Dear Mayor Denson, I am writing to inform you of a research study my classmates and I recently conducted in regards to the water quality of Lake Herrick. We conducted this study by splitting up into groups, where each group performed a series of tests on the water. Our collective results helped us to determine that the condition of Lake Herrick is decent thus far, but there is always room for improvements to be made. My class and I came across the idea for this study as a result of our concern for the overall quality of Lake Herrick, as it could be a source of water for the Athens community. This stream is also subject to runners and their dogs that enjoy the many paths and beautiful scenery that surround the stream, therefore pet waste was an initial concern. We decided as a class that as citizens of Athens, it was our job to ensure this stream remain of high quality for the safety of our community. Included in this letter is our overall results about the current standing of the water quality. During this experiment, we walked along the watershed taking note of what we saw and went through procedures to conduct a series of tests. By doing so, we concluded that the stream was in relatively good condition, free of litter and excess pollution. However, surrounding the lake is plenty of activity and man-made structures. This includes the University of Georgia’s recreational fields and parking lots. We determined that there is always the possibility that these structures could affect the quality of the water, so as a precaution, fences and other means of protection of the stream would be beneficial to keep pollution out. We feel that these precautionary measures would help to maintain the quality of the stream. The “watershed survey” that we conducted included visual observations of the surroundings of the stream. This included looking out for certain land uses and how they may affect the quality of the stream. These observations led us to believe that the water was relatively clean and lacked pollution because there were no pipes that seemed to drain into the stream, no visible litter, and no nearby factories that would usually drain waste into nearby water sources. This led us to believe there is a positive future for the stream, as long as this can be maintained. Having volunteers in the community walk the paths nearby picking up any trash once a week would benefit the water quality by cleaning up the land surrounding the stream.

Our physical and chemical samplings served the purpose of determining how clean the water was based on observations such as: how many sediment particles were in the water and what the pH of the water was. We determined that there were very small amounts of sediment in the water, meaning it was fairly clear and visibly clean. The pH of the water was neutral, meaning the water is able to sustain wild life and a healthy ecosystem. There was also high levels of dissolved oxygen, which means there was enough oxygen in the water to allow for fish and other creatures to live. The air and water temperatures were also within average range for the time of year we took the samples. We also determined there was no feces in the stream, eliminating our initial concern for pet waste from the trails. From our biological sampling, we did not find many macroinvertebrates, which we believe to be a result of the cold weather. However, the few that we did find were typically very sensitive creatures. Therefore, the fact that they were able to survive in this habitat indicates overall good water quality, because they would be unable to survive otherwise. Because the water quality is doing well overall, we would like to recommend a few preventative measures in order to ensure that the stream at Lake Herrick is maintained, if not continuously improving. We feel that having volunteers pick up trash and install plants native to Georgia would benefit the stream as it would prevent runoff storm water from polluting the water along with trash. We also recommend phosphorus-containing fertilizers not be used near the site of the stream, as it accelerates the growth of algae in our lakes. Together, we can make this valuable water source cleaner than the way we found it! Best regards, Baylee Smith
