1. WATERLOGGING

2. If water table rise to such a level through capillary action to the surface
& root zone, that it cannot conveniently permit an anticipated activity
this situation is called WATER LOGGING. It is a disturbing phase and
adversely affect plant, animal and human being, as waterlogging is
unexpected consequence of the area and landscape, that is an adverse
out come of human intervention on the wetlands along with climate
change.

Over irrigation of fields
Obstruction of natural drainage
Impermeable clay layer below the soil
Obliteration of natural drainage
Inadequate capacity for arterial drainage
Construction of a water reservoir
Natural obstruction to the flow of ground water

5. Water Logging in Dhaka
Water logging is one of the prime urban problem that Dhaka suffering for
decades. Even after a light rain many areas of the Dhaka turned out to be small
islets with thousands stranded or wallowing through knee-deep dirty waters stuck
up in roads and streets.
If the rain lasts for hours it changes the view of the Dhaka city - most of the busy
roads and streets become inundated because canals, being the primary drainage
system of the city are blocked, cannot carry the huge volume of storm water.

6. Structural Causes:
 Dhaka has a tropical wet and dry climate. The monsoon
season brings nearly 80% of the annual average rainfall of
1,854 millimeters (73 in) occurs between May and September.
Those and driven rainwater by circulated rivers around the
city is the major source of water logging and the city become
swamp due to the drainage congestion.
 Shrinkage of the natural drainage and wetlands by
unauthorized land filling and illegal construction over canal.
 Secondly, urban land covered by solid and resistant surface
doesn’t let natural infiltration of rainfall into the ground.
 Rapid population Growth.

7. Management Causes:
 Governing authorities do not have a
long-term and coordinated plan to
address the water logging problem.
 The government had no control
over the unauthorized and
unplanned development occupying
canals and water bodies in and
around the city.
 Unorganized digging of road at the
edge of monsoon by WASA, RAJUK,
City Corporations and private
developers
Behavioral causes:
 Solid Waste Dumping on natural canals.
 Lack of awareness of local people and
government agencies.

8. EFFECTS OF WATERLOGGING
 Inhabiting activity of soil bacteria.
 Decrease in available capillary water
 Fall in soil temperature
 Defective air circulation
 Rise of salt
 Delay in cultivation operations
Growth of flora
 Adverse effects on community health
 Less availability of oxygen

9. Providing efficient surface Drainage.
Reducing percolation from canals.
Restriction of irrigation.
Adoption of sprinkler method for irrigation
Removing obstructions in natural drainage

Re-modeling of Surface Drains Canal Lining
