Abstract
Mewat district is one of the 21 districts of Haryana state in northern India. The
district was carved as the 20th district of Haryana from erstwhile Gurgaon
and Hathin Block of Faridabad districts. Water conservation and
management encompasses the policies, strategies and activities made to
manage water as a sustainable resource, to protect the water environment
and meet the future human demand. Water is very crucial in human
life.Water usage will be affected by size of population and growth in a
particular area or any region. Many regions in India are still undergoing
through water stress. The village named Kaliyaka, which is situated in
Mewat District, Haryana. In this region, there is problem of water
conservation as water that was supplied in village is saline. Due to high
level of salinity of water that was coming from Kiranj, and due to this
water people from that area suffer from body pain. Mineral deficiency in
this water cause problem of white hair to youngsters also. As shortage of
water now a days is a crucial and vital problem and has become
necessary. As Mewat reels under the water crisis induced by salinity, the
solutions implemented by the people of Kaliyaka, be it catchment
treatment, rooftop rainwater harvesting or building of a community water
tank, could very well hold the key to water security for the villages of the
region.
Introduction
Kaliyaka is a Village in Nuh Tehsil in Mewat District of
Haryana State, India. It belongs to Gurgaon Division . It is
located 21 KM towards East from District head quarters
Nuh. 14 km from Nuh. 332 km from State capital
Chandigarh. According to Census 2011 information the
location code or village code of Kaliyaka village is 63082.
Kaliyaka village is located in Nuh Tehsil of Mewat district
in Haryana, India. It is situated 22km away from sub-district
headquarter Nuh and 22km away from district headquarter
Mewat At Nuh. As per 2009 stats, Kaliyaka is the gram
panchayat of Kaliyaka village. The total geographical area
of village is 325 hectares. Kaliaka has a total population of
1,099 peoples. There are about 177 houses in Kaliyaka
village. Sohna is nearest town to Kaliyaka.
Objectives
The main objective of the study is to:
• Find solution of why salinity is too high in the
study area.
• How to conserve water in selected area as
amount of good drinking water is very less.
• Steps and how to spread awareness among
people of that village as water that they were
using is not good for drinking.
Database :
The present paper is based on both primary as well
as secondary sources of data that is collected
after reviewing literature of various published
sources and reports respectively.
Demographics:
The total population of the study area comprises of
1099. Out of them, male population comprises
599 and female population comprises of 500
respectively according to Census Report, 2011.
• Findings:
• In the study area, the village Kaliyaka’s main problem that was
identified was related to water only. Due to level of salinity is high
in water. The water that is coming through Kiranj is not good for
drinking purposes. The people living in the area are not capable to
spend money on purchasing water. As people of that village are
practicing and depend on primary activity i.e. agriculture and
therefore, is the main occupation of that village. The population
distribution can also define the picture of the village. They are using
that saline water for all purposes respectively.
• The water that was coming from Kiranj cause problems like joint
pains, white hair and many other problems. There is high volume of
sodium chloride and mixed calcium chloride in water. High level of
fluoride is also one of the cause of problem. That is why people
suffer from such disease and pain.
Source of Water:
• The water that is coming from Yamuna river is been filtered by
booster and being supplied to village. The cost of purchasing water
is 20 rupees per day. As cost of water that is filtered and is been to
village, each member of the village can’t afford. The other source
that is use is from tube well. The saline water is used for irrigation
purposes and household work too.
Water Logging:
• Water logging is also the problem in the village. The net annual
withdrawal is very less against recharge. Water logging is affected
due to salinity. There is not proper sewage system in the village and
waste water merge with wetland body that is present in the village
and is of no use. And it cause disease like dengue, malaria, jaundice
etc and other health issues.
Recommendations:
1.Conserve Rain water in Septic Tanks.
2. More and more plantation Eucalyptus Plants.
3. By Planting a water treatment Plant.
