Germany produces significant amounts of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants and other sources. All radioactive wastes in Germany are currently stored in interim storage facilities as there is no operating permanent disposal site. Four locations have been investigated for radioactive waste repositories - Asse II, Morsleben, Konrad, and Gorleben - but all face challenges. Konrad is approved to open in 2022 as Germany's first repository for low and intermediate level waste, while long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel and high level waste requires further solutions.
