The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Britain for several reasons. Britain was interfering with American trade by blocking American ships and impressing American sailors. The War Hawks in the US also wanted to seize Canada and Indian territory. James Madison declared war on Britain in 1812 because they failed to comply with the terms of the Macon's Bill No. 2 agreement. The war did not go well for the US initially due to a small military, disunity, and lack of preparation. However, the US had success at the Battle of New Orleans after a peace treaty had already been signed at the Treaty of Ghent, ending the war.
