California has had close military ties since being seized after the Mexican-American War in 1846. The state's role grew in the early 20th century with the establishment of the Pacific Fleet in San Diego in 1914. The attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan in 1941 drew the United States into World War 2 and caused panic in California and on the Pacific Coast, as it was the first attack on U.S. soil by another nation.
