The WA-Trans project is a collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies in Washington to build a statewide transportation database. It began in 2000 and has expanded to include 8 federal agencies, 7 states, and over 50 state and local agencies. The project uses pooled transportation funds to develop tools for sharing and integrating transportation data across jurisdictions. By automating data integration and updating processes, the project has successfully incorporated data from local counties into the statewide framework and estimates savings of $27 million over 20 years for participating agencies. Key lessons include the importance of communication, addressing local needs, and securing adequate long-term funding.
