Falling asleep at the wheel is an unfortunate yet common occurrence that happens to
thousands of people every year in the USA alone. In 2015, more than 391,000 people were
severely injured in car accidents as a result of simple distractions. Of that number 3,477 lost
their lives in the USA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). There are several ways
one can become distracted while driving, yet one of the most common and scary ways to be
distracted, is exhaustion. Drowsy drivers accounted for 21% of crashes according to the
American Automobile Association. By simply addressing the issue of sleepy drivers, this could
help prevent over 80,000 people getting into car accidents each year.
Vzense and Eyeware have teamed to help save lives and fix this issue. The Driver Monitoring
System (DMS) monitors head and eye movement as well as positioning to alert the driver of any
unusual movements. If one begins to get too tired, or is distracted from any other means for
too long, the DMS software alerts the driver to stay focused on driving. This system can help
solve countless deaths and accidents.

By combining Vzense advanced 3D ToF depth camera and Eyeware’s robust eye tracking
technology, the partnership’s core mission is to pioneer eye tracking software coupled
with powerful hardware.

movement of the driver’s head and eyes
⚫ Detects in real time the direction of the driver’s gaze to alert driver’s drowsiness or

not possible with 2D systems
⚫ 3D depth map images of the driver’s head makes DMS identify the driver, which
realize comfort-related applications like driver identification and authentication used

VGA ToF Sensor from Vzense

Eyeware, a Swiss-based eye tracking software company, developed the eye tracking
GazeSenseTM software for in cabin Driver Monitoring System(DMS). Integrated with
Vzense ToF 3D depth camera DCAM710, the system captures the depth-mapped
images of the driver’s eyes and head posture to calculate in real time the direction of
the driver’s gaze, to address driver drowsiness and distraction.
The Algorithm from Eyeware
Vzense starts back in 2016, where it was a part of an already established corporation, Pico. In May of 2020,
Vzense branched off and became an independent company focusing on ToF technology. Since the team’s
inception, more than 100,000 of our ToF products have been manufactured and distributed to clients all over
