VR most suitable for situational awareness – Think in three
dimensions
What is situational awareness? Problems which involve
multidimensional spaces, components or activities. e.g.,
– X: Government regulatory body
– Y: Company rules and practices
– Z: Workplaces
– X: Missile components
– Y: Deployment terrain
– Z: Military regulations
– X: Confined space interior
– Y: Confined space scaffolding - exterior
– Z: Rescue equipment

Basics of “blended” VR model
– Demonstration: narrated/hosted moment in “launch” environment, darkened
fringe no head-turns
– Guided Practice/Performance: POV Activities: Learning objectives reflected
in full virtual display
Eyes scan hot points, such as a gallery with images or data, launch fully
visualized missions
Return to launch point
– Level Design: Utilize to add variety by making POV activities faster, more
challenging (e.g., more difficult tool or procedure)

Sabido 4-step Questioning Process –
Parasocial Identification
1. What is my “premise”? E.g., ignoring safety procedures leads to injury;
ruthless ambition leads to its own destruction (Macbeth); technology without
moral restraint leads to the end of humanity (Terminator series); power is
more influential than love and compassion (Game of Thrones)
2. Who is my “protagonist” – embodies change in behavior, on the fence
3. What is my “protagonist behavior arc” – character on the fence must decide
4. Who is my “antagonist or obstacle character” – barrier to behavior change.

REVIEW
Ask participants to introduce themselves and list one reason they are interested in virtual reality.
Say: This is a data-driven presentation, not an ad for VR, for an individual mission or for a department’s capability. Even if that were my goal, I work for Raytheon Blackbird and cannot tell you what I do anyway.
So I had our multimedia department put together a video…
Part 1 of this Tutorial covers:
Safety
How to determine the advantages of immersive learning as an ROI.
How to craft an immersive learning experience – the most important elements.
Communicating benefits, opportunities and potential risks of VR and AR to your organization, stakeholders and clients.
Assessing and measuring success in the field.
It also includes use cases of VR in learning, both civilian and military.
(Review Agenda items: Tutorial, Break and Workshop, including prize.)
Review the Gartner Research chart three levels of immersion:
Augmented reality

CAVE: full 3d experiences
Pet Rocks were decorated stones that were sold to people as a substitute for a real pet. It was a silly, short-lived fad in the 1970s.
Training terminology and – especially technology – is susceptible to become the next ‘Pet Rock’
Technology used for training & development purposes has a reputation for over-promising and under-delivering. It quickly becomes a ‘pet rock’ when the promised results fail to materialize.
Knowing why, when and were to applynew technology is the way to avoidPet Rock Syndrome
We avoid waste by focusing on what VR does better, exclusively: situational awareness. You will learn the basics in this workshop, both in terms of the theoretical models and what you experience by applying it in a hands-on workshop activity. The info we share is only from reliable, objective sources of data: research Universities and respected consumer organizations such as Gartner Research, at a cost of thousands of dollars to Raytheon.
VR is here and is not going away as a fad or trend. Gartner identifies four trends, starting in about 5 years.
(Review Gartner data – applications of VR.)
The same study showed Virtual training and education 80% of the F500 companies surveyed in 2016 plan a VR pilot.

Use Case #2: Medical Mishaps is a private sector learning project funded by a large Midwest hospital chain aimed at teaching nurses greater mindfulness in three areas:
Misdiagnosis of meds
Hand sanitation
General mindfulness
The University of Washington Department of Psychology was contracted to conduct a 3rd party study of the results of the results. Exit surveys followed virtual immersion, followed by 6-month and one-year surveys. Additionally, safety managers at four defense plants around the country were required to provide injury data.
The results were compelling. Compared to traditionally-trained personnel, VR resulted in:
A 38% reduction in plant injuries
1/3 the number of hours lost due to safety-related incidents
ACTIVITY
Take 2-3 minutes to make a list of potential training projects involving virtual reality. Don’t worry about the technical aspects of the technology.
(List on whiteboard or PPT slide the group’s answers. Have the group vote on more and less effective application of VR.)
