3. Subject
The idea that we have come up with for our Vox Pops is surrounding the issue of ‘Mental Health’
as we believe that this is an issue which needs to be spoken about more. As students, I feel that
the subject isn’t highlighted enough in the student community and therefore people don’t
necessarily understand what the subject is, and how you can help people with it. With our Vox
Pops project we aren’t directly asking our interviewees if they have any mental health problems
or issues, but more generalizing the questions as ‘If you…’ and ‘Do you…’ type questions.
We believe it could be an interesting topic to focus our project on, as it could allow us to get a
better understanding of what people know and don’t know about the topic, and how mental
health can affect student mental health and how we can change that. Social media for example
is a great platform for connecting and socializing with friends and families, but also has a lot of
graphic items and content which include violence, sexual harassment, mental health and
wellbeing issues, generally with ideologies relating to suicide and death which obviously needs to
be regulated, but we want to get feedback from the student community.
4. Research
One in Four students suffer from mental health problems.
Depression and Anxiety are the most commonly reported mental health ailments.
(77% have depression related problems) (74% have anxiety related problems)
5. Research
One of the stats that got us all thinking about mental health was the fact that there were 21% (just
over 1/5th) who believed that the mental health services were either available or helpful at their
chosen Universities, which is worrying. Mental health is definitely a topic which needs to be spoken
more about and given light to, so we thought it was right to think about the issue and test the student
population as to what they do and don’t know about mental health.
(18% of students have already made use of their mental health services)
(89% of students have visited a councillor)
(30% of students found the service very helpful)
(45% of students found the service somewhat helpful)
(21% of students didn’t find the services helpful at all)
6. Questions
When we settled down into our group, we came up with a lot of questions relating to the issue
of mental health, but came at it from a lot of angles. We had questions relating to social media
and mental health, student support etc and we needed to narrow the questions down, but also
trying to get as much information out of our interviewees. Whilst looking at the questions, we
also noticed that some of the questions would be better to have in the same question, and that
we could get a double answer, as it linked with another question.
The final set of questions that we have decided to ask our interviewees are below:
1- What do you think of the mainstream media’s coverage about mental health?
2- Why might some people find it difficult to speak up about their mental health issues?
3- Why do people in our generation have mental health issues?
4- How can we as students help other students with mental health issues?
5- Do you feel like social media should be regulated/checked and how can it can affect mental
health?
6- Do you know any resources, websites and links that offer support?
7- One piece of advice you would give to someone going through any mental health
problems/issues?
7. Test Interview :
Filming and Editing
Name Of Student: Brandon Boyd
For the Vox Pops test shoot, the aim was to try and interview a small selection of people and make sure that the
background was composed correctly, as well as making sure that the audio was loud enough. We also wanted to
make sure that we didn’t have too much background noise. When we took out the equipment, we made sure that
everyone had a specific role, so that we could start setting up straight-away without wasting any time or
hesitating on what we were doing.
When we began filming our subjects, we made sure that we had the consent forms ready so that once we had
finished the interview, we could get them to quickly sign before they went off without giving us their permission
to use the footage. Another thing that we had to be aware of is that we setup the camera in a suitable position
with a correctly composed background, including the lighting.
We also made sure that we tried to interview a variety of students from different years, to get a balanced set of
answers. As I was the interviewer for this project, it was my role to go and approach different students to ask
them questions about the project. I had to initially build up the confidence to engage in conversation with the
students we wanted to interview, and asked them to answer as many or as little of the questions as they wanted
to, and for any questions that they didn’t have an answer for, they had the option to ignore that specific question.
8. Test Interview :
Filming and Editing
Name Of Student: Holly Hubbard
During Test filming I learnt the importance of setting up the camera in the right location suitable for the Vox Pops
and finding a suitable interviewee that would be confident when answering the questions.
When filming the interviewee it was vital to have the microphone turned up and using the microphone muffler.
We considered the option of altering the interviewee’s voice if they wanted to keep themselves anonymous when
answering the questions. As a way of engaging students to participate in our group we decided to keep the
questions broad to allow students with mental health issues be comfortable speaking.
The importance of using a microphone muffler to help with the background noise and when it is windy.
9. Test Interview :
Filming and Editing
Name Of Student: Matthew Bradley
During test interviewing, I learnt about getting a suitable camera angle of the interview to allow for a professional
style to the Vox Pop. The camera angle is important to any vox pops because this is the sight for the audience
used as their view. Before pressing record ad filming any interview, it was important to establish a pleasant
background to create a quality composition. During test filming, we encountered at times some background noise
around campus. When reviewing the recordings, we noticed a loud background volume. Therefore, when it came
to the filming the vox pops, we are going to remember to find suitable areas to film in order to get the best
results.
Also in our test editing session, I learnt the key elements of where to cut shots in order to create a professional
look and flow to the vox pops. This gives a slick feel to the footage and makes for a pleasant viewing. I also
learnt how to reduce background noise to our footage to deal with the problem of loud background noise. This is
a key feature to learn how to help solve noisey backgrounds.
10. Test Interview :
Filming and Editing
Name Of Student: Luke Goncalves
The tripod we were given was damaged, and we had to exchange it for a different one part of the way through
filming. We should have checked it earlier and exchanged it at the beginning of the shoot. This could also be
important to keep in mind for checking batteries are full and there is space on memory cards.
We should either be quicker in getting tripods and cameras set up or find a way to set them up slightly ahead of
time, especially for vox pops settings when interviewees may want to do the interview as quickly as possible.
A few potential interviewees declined to be interviewed as they were not comfortable answering the questions in
front of a camera. We could have asked them if they wanted to remain anonymous by not showing their faces in
the shot and by altering their voices in the editing stage. We can keep this in mind in the future when asking
others for interviews.
11. Interviewees and Settings - Test Shoot
For our Vox Pops test shoot, our aim was to get a minimum of 3 people to answer our questions, as we
know it was going to be difficult approaching random students around campus. We took advantage of the
people walking around Clifton Campus during the allotted time given, and also messaged some of our friends
to practice our interview skills on if we were unable to stop any students passing by. Below you can see the
three test interviews that we did and they were all filmed during a 3 hour period. For a test shoot, we
managed to get three interviewees and it gave us an insight as to which questions worked well, and which
settings were best to shoot in, helping us to think about the lighting, composition, questions that we needed
to reword or remove and a way to get a variety of different students to partake in our project.

We interviewed Ella and Sophia on
Clifton Campus as both of these girls
are media students and this is where
they go to lectures/seminars etc.
Then we decided to interview Ollie
and Sam at the student union in the
city, as this is where they are primarily
based; Ollie is VP Sport and Sam
works for the NTSU.
21. Interviewees and Settings
For our next three interviewees, we were
still on Clifton campus, but decided to film
outside the Mary Ann Evans building. We
felt that this would show a variety of
different backgrounds, including some of
the student accomodation and the
pavillion which is an area to socialise and
mingle with friends.

Our final two interviews also took place in the city. We
went into the Boots library on the city campus, and
decided to set up inside so that there was no
background noise that would affect the video, but also
would be a different environment to the other settings
that we had shot at.
24. Making a graphic - Photoshop
For our Vox Pops video, we wanted to use a graphic with a
voiceover as opposed to an interviewer as we felt that this would
look better in the final edit. We looked at other examples after
filming our 13 interviewees and felt that having an interviewer in
shot would distract people from listening to the person answering
the questions, and we wanted to ensure that the focus was fully
on them.
In the second screen shot you can see that we added a picture to
enhance the graphic. The image was found by doing a simple
Google Search of ‘Mental health images’. On Photoshop we
decided to lower the opacity of the image so that it blended into
more of a background image, instead of being the main focus of
the graphic.
The final screen shot shows that we started experimenting with
text and seeing which size would be the most suitable for the
graphic. We didn’t want the text to be too big otherwise it would
look silly, but also too small would make it unreadable.
For our first attempt at making a
graphic, this is what it looks like after
the final editing. It’s a very simple
concept, but we feel that having a
graphic and a voiceover would be more
interesting to watch, than having the
interviewer on the screen. We may end
up changing the graphic used for the
video, but this is just something that
we wanted to put in place to separate
the questions.
25. Updating the graphic
After deliberation with the
rest of the group, we decided
that the graphic didn’t flow
well with our video project
and we decided to edit it. We
went for a simpler idea with
the NTU logo as the backdrop
behind each of the questions,
lowering the opacity.
26. Video Editing - Premiere Pro
After filming all of our interviews,
we decided to get straight on
with the editing. We all sat down
as a group to discuss how we
wanted to final edit to look,
including the titles, any graphics,
text or subtitles and whether we
wanted to have a voiceover or
not.
Here, you can see a screenshot
whilst we were editing on Adobe
Premiere Pro, and the initial
graphic that we decided to use to
split each of the questions up.
Above, you can see that we have edited all of the best from the 13
interviewees on the timeline. Some of the footage from our test shoot
wasn’t used because the sound was too low or there was too much
background noise. We also separated each question, with the graphic
that we made on Photoshop and made it appear just before the question.
27. Titles and Credits
We decided to add a title to our project and
call it ‘Student opinions on Mental Health’ as
this was an appropriate title for the project. We
spent a long time coming up with a design and
this was the final design that we went with. We
also decided to add name tags to each of our
interviewees, and added credits to the end of
our video project thanking everyone in our
group as well as the interviewees.
At the end of our video project we also decided to add
some helpful links to websites that would be useful for
people going through any mental health problems or
situations, so that they knew where to get help. We
added the ones mentioned by our vox pop interviewees
Hugo, Ollie and Samantha; (Samaritans, Mind and the
IAS, available on the NTSU student website).
Along with these three we decided to add links to:
-The NHS
-Young Minds (www.youngminds.org.uk)
-Student Minds (www.studentminds.org.uk)
-Mental Health Foundation (www.mentalhealth.org.uk)
28. Creating voice overs and editing
We decided to include a voiceover to overlay the graphics. To do this,
Luke recorded himself asking the questions and edited the sound on
an audio software to make sure that there was no background noise.
He recorded each question multiple times to have a variety to show
to the group before picking a final audio file to use.
In the final workshop, we decided to
finalise editing the video project whilst also
adding titles, credits, the chosen voiceover
for the questions and name tags to
introduce each of our interviewees.
