LESSON 1:
VOCAL AND
INSTRUMENTAL
SOUND
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
ANOTHER SOURCE OF SOUND
SOME MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS HAVE PITCH,
WHILE SOME MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS HAVE
NO PITCH, OR ARE UNPITCHED.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS THAT WE STRIKE, HIT,
OR BEAT ARE CALLED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
RHYTHM STICKS
are made of
wood that you
strike or rub
together to
produce a
clicking sound
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
TAMBOURINE
is made of wood or
plastic with metallic
jingles at the sides. It is
played by shaking or
striking the instruments.
It produces a ringing
sound.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
CASTANETS
are made of two pieces
of wood or hard plastic.
By hooking the string
over your thumb and
clicking the pieces
together, you make a
clicking sound
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
CLAVES
are made of thick wood
that you strike or rub
together, like rhythm
sticks, to produce a
clicking sound
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
TRIANGLE
It is made of metal. It is
suspended in the air
and played by striking
the sides with a metal
beater to produce a
ringing sound.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
WOOD BLOCK
It is made of block of
wood. Strike it with a
wooden mallet or a
beater to produce a
clicking sound.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
DRUM
it is made of wood,
metal, steel, or
aluminum. It has animal
skin or plastic for the
drum head. Strike or hit
it with your hands or
knuckles, a mallet, or
drum sticks to produce
a booming sound.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
MARACAS
Are like rattles made of
hard plastic or wood.
They have seeds or
pebbles inside. Shake
them back and forth or
sideways to produce a
swishing sound.
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
SAND BLOCKS
are small blocks of
wood covered with
sandpaper that are
rubbed against each
other to make a
swishing sound
UNPITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
CYMBALS
are made of brass and
have handles. Hold
them in vertical
position, facing each
other. Strike the
cymbals together to
produce a clanging
sound
PITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
XYLOPHONE
is made of
removable
wooden bars
suspended on a
frame that are
struck with mallets
PITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
TIMPANI
or KETTLEDRUM are
like big drums. The
body is made of
copper. The drum is
played by striking the
head with a stick.
PITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
GLOCKENSPIEL
similar to xylophone but
it is made of metal bars
and is smaller in size. It
produces a high sound.
PITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENTS:
METALLOPHONE
made of thick metal
bars, thus, producing a
low sound
PITCHED PERCUSSION
INSTRUMENT:
LYRE

and played in a vertical
or horizontal position
