The document outlines principles for a new DPU Libraries web portal including:
1. The new portal will streamline workflows, consolidate content from previous platforms, and emphasize a uniform brand. Governance will be centralized with input from committees.
2. Five information architecture principles will be implemented: having the right number of choices, making every sub-page an alternative home page, using examples to create understanding, planning for growth, and organizing by tasks/audiences.
3. Specific guidelines are outlined for each principle, such as limiting global navigation options and providing dynamic/serendipitous content.

The University of Hertfordshire (UH) implemented a new
commercial Resource Discovery Service at the same time as it
changed to the Koha Open Source Library Management System. In doing so it moved away from using Google Scholar, as its main platform, at a time when many universities are deciding to only use Google Scholar. Hear about the debate between commercial and non-commercial services and why UH made the decisions it did. After 18 months was it the right decision? What has been the impact on library services and library users?
SharePoint 2013 has FAST search built into its core fabric. New site templates and web parts have been added to allow you to build search driven applications. Through these search web parts, we can cross site collection boundaries to surface information, improve navigation and create a seamless experience across the different sites, site collection and web application. We will also demonstrate how to use cross site publishing to leverage multiple content sources. We also discuss several approaches for publishing internet sites.
Attendee Takeaways:
1. Understanding how to work with the Product Catalog site template in SharePoint 2013
2. Learn to setup and configure cross site publishing
3. Learn to add responsive design to your site
Libraries are rapidly changing and expanding to web-based delivery of content and related access services to cater the information needs and expectations of their modern users.
One approach is to design and develop multi tired architectures that include an integration layer providing programme level services for user level applications such as a portal.
The library portal is a tool to organize information resources and services in a way that supports the users’ needs.
LIS professionals should be aware about portal technology, its applications in academics and usability of the portal which is based on effective content management system.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

2. Vision Statement
The DPU Libraries envision a simplified, extensible web portal that
surfaces our unique collections, enhances findability and is focused
on user tasks. Based on industry standards for excellence in
design, functionality and the use of current technologies, the new
portal will streamline existing workflows for both staff and users
through consolidation of content while building on previous
features and platforms. Governance of the portal will be
administered centrally by Library Web Services, but will
incorporate distributed input from the Web Services Advisory
Committee and from a system of assigned content curators.
Development will be iterative, based on internal data and user
research and adhere to web conventions and established usability
standards. Finally, the portal will emphasize a uniform brand and
serve as a symbol of innovation and professionalism for the DPU
librarians and all of DePaul University.
3. Principles
Web Services is planning to implement 5 principles of
information architecture into our SharePoint site.
1. Principle of Choices: Fewer choices are less stressful. Too
few is boring.
2. Principle of Front Doors: Each sub-page must serve as an
alternative home page.
3. Principle of Exemplars: An example goes a long way in
creating user understanding
4. Principle of Growth: Growth happens, plan for it
5. Principle of Functional Navigation: Site organization
around distinct sections/tasks/audiences
4. Principle of Choices
• We aim for no more than 4 options in our
global navigation system
• We limit sub-menu options to five (including a
“more…” link)
• We aim to limit choices on every page
• A single search box (WCL)
5. Principle of Front Doors
• A unified global navigation system
• Fat footer serving as mini-site map
• Access to buried content
(Via, CDM, LibGuides) from top-levels of site
6. Principles of Exemplars
• Icons
• Examples of content (new books in Special
Collections)
• Contextual images
7. Principle of Growth
• Provide space for dynamic/serendipitous
content (announcements, ads, new tools)
• Embed flexibility into global nav system
(“more…” links)
8. Principle of Functional Navigation
• Menus that serve distinct audiences
• Menu items that are task-oriented
• Dynamic menus
9. Content Must Haves on Every Page
• Single Search Box (WCL)
• Research Help Tools
• Directional Info
• About Us Info
• Access to Unique Collections
