Welcome, my name is Kelly Saunders and I am a Library Science student at ODU. Its amazing how technology and the digital media work is evolving and I want to share a few tools that I learned about that I think will help students and teachers create and enjoy when making a book report. Of course each tool I present can be used in a multitude of ways….the possibilities are endless. I chose “book reports” b/c these can be a dreaded chore for students to do as well as for teachers to grade. They take up a lot of class time yet they are still needed in order to teach students about reviewing books and identifying the key pieces to a story. The tools I will present will not only eliminate the stress for students who are very shy and do not like to speak in front of an audience but it will also allow the teacher to view the reports anywhere/anytime. (2 minutes)
Remember when………you could dress up as a character or not…..stand up in front and read straight from your written report while holding your book. Everyone sat and listened all afternoon and the teacher went down her checklist and marked what was approriate. Some students could be heard and were excited. Some not so much. (1 minute)
Does this look familiar? There are a ton of forms and templates to choose from……….BORING. The same information just a different look. By the 2nd form the students are dreading the assignment and I bet the teacher is too. (1 minute)
Aurasma is an augmented reality tool where an image or object has its own Aura. This image recognition tool allows students to create a video and attach a picture of their book so that when a device scans the object it goes to the report. The website is on the screen and the app has to be downloaded on the device being used. Creating an account is recommended and teachers can also create channels for their assignemnts or classes. Creating an Aurasma is easy but does include a few steps. 1. Open the app and click on the Aurasma icon at the bottom. 2. Click on the +. 3. Click on “create” then choose “Device”. 4. Click on the + at the top of the screen. 5. Choose from a video in your photo stream or camera to take a new video. 6. When using the “camera” option you would begin recording the book report. You can do it anywhere and choose to use props, etc.. 7. When finished click on “use”. 8. Name it and click “Finish”. 9. Click the pic of your video and preview it. If you do not like it then do it again. When you have a video that is usable then click on “Select”. 10. Choose and image to attach as the pic for the aura. When doing a book report you would usually choose to take a pic of the book. Then when its complete all the teacher or other students has to do is scan the book and they will then see the video of the report. 11. Click the arrow sign. 12. Name it, choose public or private and add to a channel if there is one available for the class. 13. Click “Finish” Your aura is now ready! (An Ipad demonstration could be going on at this point to demonstrate or a handout with and Aura made from a Pic on the paper could be used if everyone downloaded the app). (Watch YouTube video – 4.40). (8 minutes)
Using the Aurasma tool hits these SOL’s write on the nail. Think of all the other ways you could use this app to present other projects and assignments. (read SOL’s). (3 minutes)
(read the uses) Example – take a vide of a pair of scissors and a student saying the word in English and showing a sign with the English spelling then another student saying it in Spanish while holding a sign with the Spanish spelling. This could be done around the entire classroom or library or even school. (2 minutes)
Videolicious is a fun tool for creating video using, pictures and/or videos from your camera roll, voice recordings, and music to create a personalized I minute video. LIMITED to 1 minute. (1 minute)

QR codes are easier to create and use than you may think. There are many websites that will allow you to create QR Codes for free. The website above is one of many. You simply choose any website or uploaded item and add it to the “create a code” box. Your QR Code is instantly there. You can save it to your computer or device and add it wherever needed. So, to create a book report using this option is super easy. Have someone video a book report and upload it to YouTube. There could be a school site or class site on YouTube to assist in uploading to a common place. You then copy your link to the QR code site and it is made. You can print off this code and hand it in to the teacher. The code above is anactual code from my blog. (5 minutes)

This tool allows you to simply type a short phrase into the text box and then hit the QR code symbol. You then have a large QR Code which when scanned will say what you wrote. This may not be usable for a book report per say for older students but this could be a fun way to utilize technology to give writing prompts or ask a question about a book or story for an essay. The teacher or librarian can type in the prompt or essay question and post it on the class website or blog or could email it to the students or simply copy it and hand it to the students. (2 minutes)
Review SOL’s (3 minutes)
Teachers and Librarians can make QRCodes with voice recordings for everything in the room or school. This would be helpful for students who are still learning how to read, for ELL or ESL students who are learning a new language and for special ed students are early learners who are struggling with site words. Ask for more suggestions. (3 minutes)
New digital media means new ways of doing and presenting in the schools. Lets make boring book reports from the past rejuvenated with fresh ideas and technology and excite the students and teachers at the same time! (1 minute)
